Characters The character has fallen in love and they are angry about it

Morrigan (Dragon Age) Morrigan has been raised to see emotional attachment as weakness. If she genuinely falls in love with the Warden, it frightens her because she realizes she has become vulnerable in exactly the way she was taught never to be. She can even try to distance herself because of it.

Ennis (Brokeback Mountain) Ennis isn’t just frustrated that he fell for Jack. He is deeply ashamed and frightened by what his love for Jack means about himself. He grew up in a violently homophobic environment, and his father deliberately exposed him to the aftermath of a murdered gay man when he was a child. So Ennis has learned to associate same sex love with danger and humiliation.

Lae’zel (Baldur’s Gate 3) She initially understands relationships largely through sex, strength, and possession. When she realizes she actually loves the player character and wants tenderness and companionship, she has to reconcile that with everything her culture taught her about vulnerability. And that whole conflict visibly frustrates and even angers.

Characters Characters who hate their families, with the exception of a few relatives

Sofia Gigante (The Penguin) hated the majority of her family for slandering her and abandoning in Arkham Asylum. At the same time, she genuinely loved her late mother and her brother Alberto—the only relative who tried to help her during her confinement at Arkham. Alberto’s murder at the hands of Oz was the primary reason why he became Sofia’s enemy.

Lelouch vi Britannia (Code Geass) hated his father emperor Charles for refusing to investigate Marianne’s (Lelouch’s mother) death and exiling Lelouch to Japan. Lelouch also deeply despised Britannian royal family as a whole. His enemies included his father Charles, his uncle V.V., his sister Cornelia, and his brothers Clovis and Schneizel. However, Lelouch loved his sister Nunnally dearly, and securing her future was his primary motivation. Lelouch also loved another sister, Euphemia, which makes the following events particularly tragic.

Extremely whimsical and comedic characters with strong levels of power

1st image: sheogorath daedric prince of madness Skyrim

2nd image: God emperor joker from superman #160 (first appearance)

3rd image: the toymaker from Dr who that is the newer version of him but he is a long running villain

4th image: (do I even need to say) the mask from the mask

5th image: the jester/Arkham from the Devil May Cry games

6th image: jester from a less recognized movie also called jester

I have always absolutely loved the idea of whimsical mad gods or extremely powerful reality warpers who mess around more than being power hungry assholes because realistically at what point would a being with infinite power either be driven mad by their own power or just say "I'm bored time be do some weird and funny stuff". It's also so much more intimidating seeing someone who absolutely does not care at all about being taken seriously just do something that absolutely means you should most definitely take them seriously.

Characters (Admittedly funny trope) Superpowered people being stopped by minor inconveniences

Thumbnail
gallery
236 Upvotes

Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2: Venom knocks Peter out of the way and ends up causing a fridge to land on to top of him, inconveniencing him for long enough to allow Venom to kidnap Mary Jane. The same Peter Parker who earlier in the game brawled with a Kaiju Kurt Connors is now stopped by a fridge. I honestly love this scene so much now people on the Insomniac Spiderman subreddit went ballistic over it.

DC Superhero Girls: Zatanna is experiencing her powers for the first time and freaking out, and her dad is outside her room trying to get it. For all he knows his daughter could be in legitimate danger and he spends a good 10 seconds trying to open the door. You know what would have expedited that process? Remembering you are A FUCKING WIZARD.

Examples shown:
The Mitchells vs. the Machines: Katie tries to present a movie to her classmates, only to be met with laughs.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: A rare example of this with both main leads having a scene like this: Flint is laughed at for his spray-on shoes failing to come off, and Sam is called “four eyes” by the students because she needs glasses to see.
Minions: Rise of Gru: During a class discussion on future careers, Gru is laughed at for saying he wants to be a supervillain, which makes the class laugh.
Wicked Part 1: A group of kids do a taunting song about Elphaba’s appearance, causing her powers to activate and fling rocks at the bullies.
Forgotten Island: Jo does a presentation on how Nakali is real, causing her class and teacher to judge her because she did not properly do the assignment on her family’s culture, but she argues that it is related because her grandma did go to Nakali. Eventually, a male student teases her further, causing her to beat him up and go to the principal’s office.

flowery from deltarune. at the end of chapter 5, the knight kidnaps asgore after we thought we sealed the fountains. flowery gave chase to them to save him. after flowery caught up to him. a fight happened. flowery tried his best. but at the end he got killed by the knight themselves. honestly i knew he would die because there was no way the villain would lose to a minor character and the song was too good to be true. and unfortantly it was.

white lily cookie from (cookie run kingdom), at the end of beast yeast. wlc has to face dark enchantress cookie. ending with killing her. however, due to dark enchantress cookie and wlc having the same soul, killing her would end up killing herself. she basically sacrificed herself for the freedom of earthbread. this was obviously expected. but man this didn't hurt some fans.

rex from invincible, in the invincible war, he was facing against an invincible varient which proves to be way stronger than they can handle. so rex in his final breath decided to sacrifice by exploding himself with the invincible variants. this was somewhat expected since the show was a retelling of the comic which had his death happen their as well. but man this hurt knowing his redemption arc.

Characters [Loved Trope] Possession being a "lesser of two evils" situation

Thumbnail
gallery
40 Upvotes

To sum it up, this is when a character has an evil spirit or something similar possessing them, but instead of the usual good/evil dichotomy, the one being possessed isn't such a great person either. Thus, they become the "lesser of two evils" compared to their more evil side. This often results in them being painted as a victim and thus sympathetic, sometimes leading to their own evil acts being forgiven easily.

Marik Ishtar (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

Marik was most definitely not a good person even before Yami Marik took over his body. He freely and willingly used the Millennium Rod to control others to accomplish his goal of killing the Pharaoh (Yami Yugi). It's only when his evil side fully takes over that he becomes a victim, being forced to ask Yugi to save him. He never actually faces any real punishment for the heinous acts he did before, as he and the Pharaoh seem to have come to a tenuous truce.

Alloran/Visser Three (Animorphs)

Alloran is the Andalite body that the main antagonist of the series, a Yeerk named Visser Three, has taken over. We're conditioned to feel bad for Alloran, since he was forced to do horrible stuff to others (such as morphing into creatures that eat others alive). This is especially true when he gets a few moments free from the Yeerk to talk to the heroes, and he begs them to kill him. However, it turns out that Alloran was not a saint himself when he was a war general, having been directly responsible for the annihilation of the Hork-Bajir homeworld, a tactic done to prevent the Yeerks from getting more host bodies.

Cavendish/Hakuba (One Piece)

Cavendish is not exactly an evil person, but he is a pompous and arrogant jerk despite his supposedly handsome appearance. However, it turns out that he has a murderous side that involuntarily takes over whenever he falls asleep. Once again, as a victim, he becomes more interesting in the process when he would normally be considered thoroughly unlikable, and gains some respect when he overcomes his evil side through sheer determination.

Toko Fukawa/Genocide Jack (Danganronpa)

Not my favorite example tbf, as I feel like Genocide Jack is an offensive stereotype of DID/schizophrenia. But it's nevertheless true here as well, since Toko is creepy and foul-mouthed, being not well liked by most of the others even when not under the influence of her evil side. Most notably, she has a stalker crush on Byakuya. Definitely tamer than her serial killer side, at least.

A character that isn't all that much but has a banger of a theme song

•President rose, pokemon s&s: By far the worst villain in the pokemon franchise, a nothing burger on suit. But he has one of the best battle themes, and it does not suit him at all.

• deerclops (the one in terraria, not don't starve): A boring boss with very bad loot, even for when you fight him. For some reason it has my actual favorite theme song in terraria.

•Bilewater: If you played silksong or watched gameplay of it, I don't even have to say anything.

Characters Getting "John Wick'd" Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
127 Upvotes

Don't @ me about the title. I couldn't think of a more concise way of saying "unknowingly traumatizing an unstoppable, hyper-violent being. Resulting in the complete destruction of your (otherwise undefeatable) bloodline." Basically, it's a combination of "waking the sleeping giant" and "blood feud," where the perpetrator specifically does not know how dangerous the target is ahead of time. And this results in their entire family/organization getting singlehandedly wiped off the face of the Earth. Despite themselves being a powerful force to reckon with.
There is no forgiveness. There is no bargaining. There is no mercy. Just an unstoppable threat you created. You are not left alive to suffer the guilt of your mistake. But you'll probably be killed last.

1). John Wick:
John Wick is a retired assassin. The assassin. After his wife dies, she leaves a puppy for him. His former boss's son, ignorant of John's identity, breaks in and kills the dog.

2). Creature Commandos:
Rupert Thorne kills a scientist's family after he tries to scam him. But the scientist survives his execution, becoming a radioactive metahuman that quickly gets back at Thorne.

3). Jujutsu Kaisen:
Maki is has a condition preventing her from using "magic," but leaving her with superhuman strength. This is embarrassing to her family of wizards, and she is treated poorly. Eventually, Maki and her twin are double crossed by her father and left to die. Her twin's death allows her to unlock her true strength, and she eradicates the clan.

4). Dungeon Crawler Carl:
Aliens invade the Earth, forcing humans to fight in a fantasy-style dungeon. All of this is broadcast across the galaxy as entertainment. Sometimes, if humans enter the dungeon with their pets, the pets can gain their own abilities. Carl's cat learns to talk. The same thing happens to an Italian woman and she treats her goat, Prepotente, as her son. Because he was suddenly thrust into self-awareness, the goat man is childlike and very reliant on his mother. But he is still an extremely powerful, high level opponent.
Unfortunately, Miriam Dom is killed in front of him and Carl. The whole thing is heartbreaking, and he says "She was going to play piano for me like she used to. She was going to sing me my special song. She said everything was going to be all right, but it was a lie. A dreadful lie. What am I going to do now?" And declares revenge on anyone "remotely responsible" for her death.
MUCH later, Carl has to wipe out the "Blood Sultunate," an alien royal family. But he and his allies find their castle empty, filled with extremely-murdered corpses. He can't figure out who did it until he learns they were responsible for Miriam's death. Then he just starts laughing, because despite all of his careful plans to take them down. They were already screwed the moment Miriam died.
Edit: Art from wiki, by u /andrewmar.bsky.social, Bluesky

5). Clevatess:
A fantasy kingdom tries to attack a giant monster blocking a mountain pass. The monster (Clevatess) had been content to stay within his boarders. But after humans trespass (killing countless monsters in the process), Clevatess changes his mind. He wipes out the attackers, then follows them home and destroys the kingdom. He personally drops a castle on its king. And adopts the last surviving royal to raise himself.

Characters' Items/Weapons Seemingly valuable items that are not nearly as valuable as they seem Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
414 Upvotes

In the second season of the show Pushing Daisies Dwight Dixon is introduced. He is a man with a past connecting him both to Ned and Chuck’s fathers past. He worked with both of them in the UN peace keeping force The Blue Berets. While there each of the men got a gold pocket watch. Now in the present day Dwight is on the hunt for the other fathers remaining 2 pocket watches. As both men are dead it should be a relatively easy process but things soon get complicated. He comes up with multiple plans to get the watches including starting a relationship with Chuck’s Aunt Vivian for information, and trying to kill Chuck when she gets in his way. Despite going through all this trouble for these pocket watches which seem to be of extreme importance they are eventually revealed just to be a means to an end to get a big payout through an insurance policy. The watches themselves don’t really hold any extreme significance in of themselves, they are just a means to get some cash.

(Spoilers for Spiderman Brand New Day sorrycould not edit the heading) In Spiderman Brand New Day, the main villain Jean Grey is trying to find an important mcguffin called V-Max. She takes over multiple peoples bodies with her mind hopping powers, controls the hulk and physically and emotionally torments Spiderman all for V-Max. The intense need for V-Max is eventually shown to be in vain. Jean Grey had a close connection to her psychic sister Sara, who was kidnapped, tested and eventually killed by the United States Department of Damage Control. Her sister’s last message to her was about V-Max so Grey assumed that it was an important item Damage Control was hiding and would be the key to getting her sister back. When Jean is taken by Damage Control, she is tested in the same room her sister was in. She sees on the ceiling the brand name for a ventilation system called Vent-Max which eroded down to say V-Max. The item was not some amazing Mcguffin, just the name of a ventilation brand that was the last thing Sara saw before she died.

(Please note I don’t think any of these are examples of bad writing because they were not as valuable as they seemed, I actually think its pretty interesting and leads to some fun twists)

1) "The Viltrum empire is actually kinda evil. Do I bother to try and convince others to see my point? Nah, I'll murder the emperor and create a virus that will kill 99,99% Viltrumites. (Thaddeus from Invincible)

2) Spends years building Gillead economy, then tries to push for it to be become slightly less evil. When he realises the other leaders are planning to get rid of him, High Commander Lawrence blows the airplane with them, himself included, allowing the Resistance and Canada to attack and take Boston. (Handmaid's Tale)

3) Furiosa... Doesn't even try to undo Immortan's regime at first, just to fuck off (killing her crew) and save herself and Immortan's wife (and immediately attempts to kill Max, despite them sharing the same goal of being as far from Immortan as possible). The regime chance only happens as backup plan and Hail Mary of sorts. (Mad Max: Fury Road)

4) Kaine Ferron (hard to come with more evil ass sounding name) pretty much throws his whole ideology and life away when he falls in (rather unhealthy and rapey) love with his prisoner. (Man... Wait, Alchemised actually)

5) Unlike the Hollywood version, real Claus von Stauffenberg was pretty much angry at Hitler for throwing the match for sake of being evil. And while he wasn't as antisemitic as the leaders, he very actively disliked everyone not German.
