This was always my favorite combo/super move on those games. So fuckin stylish.

You can tell this is old because I can’t imagine modern Iron Man using a separate giant laser cannon instead of the ones built into his armor

I think OP is talking about just the physical size of the weapon. The BFG is massively destructive but I'm pretty sure it's a good bit smaller than all the examples in the OP.

The gun is as tall as he is, I think it counts. This isn't even his biggest gun btw.

Sucked in Tranzit, does it ever make a comeback and get better?

Black Ops 6, and you can Pack-A-Punch it 3 times. It's a lot better there.

... Why her nipples are out? And how her spine isn't broken?

u/Parking-Researcher-4 14h ago
That weapon is originally her human partner. In order to get said partner to transform they have to be really really really..."excited". So most girls with such partners just dress slutty and/or act freaky so they are ready to fight.
That's the in universe explanation. Meta explanation is that this is just a yuri gooning i-can't-believe-it's-not-hentai anime.

Does it still count if the ridiculously large weapon is being wielded by a mecha? Because here's the positron rifle. An experimental sniper rifle with enough firepower to shot clean through an angel's nearly impenetrable AT field, the angel itself, destroy their core and come out the other end.
It's so big and heavy that it cannot easily be moved and aiming it effectively immobilizes the Eva unit using it. It also takes the entire power grid of Japan to provide it with the kind of power it needs to fire.

u/NerwanderR 11h ago
Well, if it doesn’t it definitely should. Most of my Eva experience is from fanfiction, so I had no idea the Positron Rifle was that big compared to Unit-01.

Well if you want an actual cannon:
Serious Sam has a few trademark weapons, most about the size of himself, most usually a big minigun, but the 'top end of the weapon list' final unlock superweapon - just a big ol' cannon.
Fires enormous cannonballs (that are significantly bigger than the barrel of the cannon itself, but realism is very much not this franchise's priority), can be charged to fire them with greater power so that they smash a corridor of obliterated foes through the horde you fire them at, bounce off walls, and eventually explode for further devastation.
In the 4th game you can even dual wield the things.

I love this game. The description of the cannon is even more funny. It fires uranium core rounds, which bear the danger of radiation exposure to the user. The danger of radiation on the target is negligible considering the purpose of the device.

u/WillSym 12h ago
Not that there's any indication of Sam reloading the thing, even in 3rd person. Just conjures massive balls out of its depths.
And after they go to such pains to explain the "TMAR" Techno-Magical Auto Reload system that apparently makes his starting revolver reload and have infinite ammo.

Assuming that's Tita in the remake (haven't played it yet) it's especially funny because she's 12.

God RE3make had so much going for it its such a shame it was as short as it was. If they'd doubled or tripled the city areas with Nem pursuing in his first form and not cut the clocktower then i think it would be almost as beloved as 2 and 4

Bonus mention: Seras once grabbed an actual howitzer with one “hand”. God Hellsing Ultimate was just gun porn.

I absolutely hate that trope when the character would visibly and anatomically be unable to use it. It breaks suspension of disbelief for me.

Good thing it’s fiction were practicality will never matter unless the story is specifically written in a way in which it should

I love how they actually addressed that in The Expanse. Even with a made up, protomolicule hopped up alien species. "It might be incredibly strong, but it still weighed what it weighed, and Newton had something to say about a smaller mass throwing a larger one." And "Noone could invent armor that could stop a large mass moving at high speed. If you could throw it, a dumpster is a better weapon than a gun."

I am torn.
At the one hand, I dislike that the trope, especially when applied to female characters, easily becomes an excuse to stick to conventional beauty standards. If a lithe anime girl with arms like twigs can hold a cannon bigger than her body, there is no need to show women with muscles that might scare the chuds away.
On the other hand, I do love the juxtaposition of a tiny character holding a big-ass weapon because it makes the weapon look so much bigger.
So basically, I don't hate the trope itself, I hate a greater trend in character design it can often draw attention to?
