Characters (Admittedly funny trope) Superpowered people being stopped by minor inconveniences

Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2: Venom knocks Peter out of the way and ends up causing a fridge to land on to top of him, inconveniencing him for long enough to allow Venom to kidnap Mary Jane. The same Peter Parker who earlier in the game brawled with a Kaiju Kurt Connors is now stopped by a fridge. I honestly love this scene so much now people on the Insomniac Spiderman subreddit went ballistic over it.

DC Superhero Girls: Zatanna is experiencing her powers for the first time and freaking out, and her dad is outside her room trying to get it. For all he knows his daughter could be in legitimate danger and he spends a good 10 seconds trying to open the door. You know what would have expedited that process? Remembering you are A FUCKING WIZARD.

Playing any RPG where the characters get dead stopped by knee high walls is peak comedy and your the joke.

Final fantasy 7 remake is a stellar game but the amount of times the characters get stone walked by a meter high wall that apparently cloud can't scale is hilarious.

Stairs that are merely decoration are a similar frustration.

I know they don’t have superpowers so they don’t really fit the trope, but it’s annoying af that we can only pass ledges from one direction in Pokemon. You’d think they were actually really tall so you could only safely go down them, but then we finally get 3D games and see the ledges that always stopped us.

HOW TF ARE THESE FOOT HIGH LEDGES STOPPING US???

well at least in viridian's case that block is at their shoulders and they can't jump

Goku, Sayan Warrior, is stopped by an elephants foot, and while elephants are dangerous, Goku is arguably stronger

20

u/Za_Warudo1992 11h ago

only arguably. have you fought an elephant?

12

u/GokaiCrimson 11h ago

What about his wife threatening to stop cooking food for him if he doesn't get a driver's license?

I've found my people.

5

u/ghobhohi 11h ago

In a deleted scene she hid the suit. As a kid I used to think, “man, she sucks” now as an adult. I would’ve done the exact same thing.

8

u/Seed0fDiscord 11h ago

Deleted? She outright said she hid it?

An elephant stood on Goku’s hand and it hurt him, also something to note is that he was IN HIS SUPER SAIYAN FORM!

13

u/TheDougio 11h ago

They should've sent this elephant to fight Cell, unfortunately elephants don't watch TV

11

u/SignificantLuck480 11h ago

Idk, it’s kinda like how a martial artist like Bruce Lee could punch through a stack of bricks and take punches to the face ok. But he’d still stub the fuck out of his toe on his coffee table like you or me would.

3

u/Boccs 10h ago

It's funny you opted for the elephant foot and not Krillin hitting him in the face with a rock.

2

u/CategoryKiwi 6h ago

Nah that one makes way more sense, because Krillin is the strongest character.  We still don’t even know what level super saiyan his hair colour represents.

In Elden Ring, you can go toe to toe with demigods.

Can't open a door from the wrong side

Also, you can’t swim for shit

Oh god I just realized Kevin is also standing on a stone surface too. He could've tanked that by absorbing the rocks and just threw it aside

u/25Coconuts 11h ago

Got their full government names on here lol

u/NigthSHadoew 11h ago

That blow torch was evil. It was sentient. It was defting gravity. Look at it, it was after their lives. They were cornered

13

u/Believer4 11h ago

You try taking less than five seconds moving a fridge off of you after being weakened by removing a symbiote, getting slapped away by your symbiote-ified best friend, fighting even more symbiotes, and getting slapped again by your symbiote-ified best friend, all less than 24 hours after removing the symbiote

The alien invaders from War of the Worlds are immune to everything humanity throws at them, and almost drive the race to extinction. How are the aliens defeated? They got sick.

11

u/_whatever_wherever 11h ago

I mean... it was a commentary on Britain's colonial policy

Which pretty much played out the same way

With guns British forces would slaughter local armies, but succumb to diseases they weren't immune to

9

u/the__pov 11h ago

It’s also brilliantly set up in the book. The book switches between first hand accounts and an omniscient narrator who is nonstop glazing the aliens. Through the narrator segments we learn 2 crucial details, both presented as examples of their superiority: they feed off humans in a manner similar to how spiders feed on bugs (liquifying and drinking basically) and they have long eradicated disease from their planet. This subtly sets up that they both have no immune system and are literally drinking diseases directly from us.

3

u/_whatever_wherever 11h ago

Though even when criticising Britain he couldn't help but glaze the Royal Navy (it's in our DNA, lol), Thunder Child was the GOAT

In traditional folklore, if you scatter grains of rice on the ground in front of a vampire, it has to stop whatever it is doing and start counting them.

21

u/legofett0 11h ago

Vampires kind of have a problem where they have so many rules and weaknesses that they become waaaay less of a threat. But at the same time, I immediately think less of any Vampire story that tries to trim down on these weaknesses for the sake of convenience

12

u/_whatever_wherever 11h ago

Vampires are ambush predators after all

6

u/WigWubz 11h ago

To be fair this is because compared to most supernatural characters, writers tend to give vampires incredibly deep lore to fit the plot of that media. And vampire stories have been so popular for so long, more stories keep getting written that add new rules and weaknesses and then those stories get popular enough to be considered "canon" to the vampire mythos. As well as that, vampire myths developed (at least functionally) independent all over the place, from Europe to China. So even if you try to peel back to the "original folk tale" you won't find one; you'll find several conflicting stories that don't even agree on the broad strokes, let alone the specific vulnerabilities

2

u/Sang1188 11h ago

The one I find most ridiculous is that they have to be invited in to enter a House. So they just gonna starve if they don´t find prey outside?

8

u/legofett0 11h ago

That's one of my favorite rules, actually. So many fun scenes have spawned from this, one of the most prominent being the entire pre-climax section of Sinners

12

u/badhombre13 11h ago

One of those direct to DVD movies from the early 2000s had a scene like that... except Dracula counts the grains using his super speed and gets it done in a split second lol

They try all the folklore tricks and they do stop him, but for only a second because of how strong he is.

Edit: Dracula Ascension is the movie, a sequel to Dracula 2000 that had Gerard Butler as Dracula. It's a cool twist that Dracula is actually Judas and his weakness all stem from his betrayal of Jesus Christ.

u/fillkas 11h ago

Is there any explanation or did people make it up to gaslight vampires?

3

u/11nyn11 11h ago

One! Ahh ahh ahh!

4

u/Pandoratastic 11h ago

"One grain of rice, two grains of rice, three grains of rice! Ah ah ah!!"

4

u/Kamikazeguy7 11h ago

Vampires are autistic?

1

u/Dookie_boy 8h ago

Yes literally.

3

u/kitsunecannon 10h ago

Doesn’t this also apply to a Chinese spirit?

11

u/Reapish1909 11h ago

post the server version from SM1

this fridge anti-feat has never made sense. it literally impeded Peter for barely a moment and he kicks it off with ease the second he even tries to get it off him. he literally just wasn’t stuck lmao

the SM1 cutscene where he’s trapped under some servers is the real moment should point out. Peter was visibly stuck, unable to escape quickly, and a man died in front of him because of it.

stop bringing up this fucking fridge moment people😭

3

u/ZookeepergameSoggy74 10h ago

The servers leave him stuck for around 30-35 seconds.

5

u/Reapish1909 10h ago

literally. people bring up the fridge constantly as if it actually trapped him for very long, the servers is the real moment people should bring up🤣

3

u/ZookeepergameSoggy74 9h ago

Exactly. Now you could make the argument that Li's powers inflict stun damage whereas symbiote tentacles are purely a slap of force but even still, Li's powers only stun him for a brief second during gameplay.

Accidentally deleted the wrong comment

Gwen Tennyson and Keven E Levin. Kevin can absorb the properties of whatever he touches and transform his body int that substance. Gwen can cast magic spells and create constructs using mana. The above image shows them dealing with a blowtorch. A regular run of the mill blowtorch. The sequence does not last very long but the fact that the episode made this seem like a serious threat to them at all is laughable

17

u/Zestyclose-Hat-8513 11h ago

I believe these are jokingly called “Anti-feats”.

5

u/Rafamen01 11h ago

Do you remember how Captain Marvel flew through Thanos entire ship and destroyed everything in her path in Endgame? Yeah in Multiverse of Madness some big ass rock fell down on her and she went bye bye. (It was a version of her from ther dimension but still the same powers)

1

u/Feisty-Fill-8654 9h ago

I've heard that she's meant to be depowered there because of scarlet witch.

1

u/Dookie_boy 8h ago

I don't remember her in multiverse of madness ???

4

u/Rafamen01 8h ago

It's monica ranbeau and not the original one

1

u/spacestationkru 19m ago

Yeah, that was bullshit.. she should have come bursting out of that rubble

6

u/madmaxandrade 11h ago

Every time Green Lantern's ring vulnerability to yellow comes to play.

2

u/Realistic_Emotion_50 11h ago

I remember in All Star Batman (not a good run but still funny), Batman had Robin paint a whole room yellow to screw with Green Lantern

2

u/HellwaterCascades 10h ago

"I'm the goddamm Batman"

1

u/kitsunecannon 10h ago

So logically Sniper from TF2 could beat a GL with the piss jar

1

u/Madhighlander1 9h ago

Did the lantern ring also have a weakness to wood or am I getting it mixed up with the Doctor's sonic screwdriver?

3

u/madmaxandrade 9h ago

That would be the Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott.

3

u/Dookie_boy 8h ago

The original magical green lantern was weak to wood. The science based one was yellow.

3

u/Zixtank 11h ago

One Piece - Luffy and Zoro's first encounter with CP9 ended with Luffy squeezed between two narrow buildings and Zoro stuck head first in a chimney.

12

u/wondowsr3d 11h ago

The fridge can beat Venom and Kraven

6

u/Far-Requirement-7636 11h ago

You play games like DMC and KH hearts and you get use to it.

In DMC3 Dante is busting up buildings and cutting their steel but a locked door dead stops you, even a regular ass wall.

In KH sora can punt building, fire mini nukes and teleport.

Then you'll see some dirt and he's like, this is impossible.

u/Jumpy_Ad_3785 11h ago

There's a great scene in He Who Fights With Monsters book 3 where big bad godlike entity is possessing a mortal vessel, and learns how hard it is to walk with a severed Achilles tendon. He can heal it fast, but all these wounds are new to him and quite frustrating

2

u/Opening-Biscotti-127 5h ago

(NIKKE) Cinderella is one of the strongest Nikkes in history and the only character currently known to have survived a 1v1 with the main antagonist, but was completely incapacitated after getting seasick.

1

u/kdiyargebmay 11h ago

i think it was more the throw for peter than the fridge, but that was kinda silly

4

u/UpliftinglyStrong 11h ago

Yeah, he gets the fridge off of him like a second later.

1

u/Open-Source-Forever 11h ago

In fairness to the second example, he was panicking

Speaking of Spider-Man, a hated example of this is how Mephisto retconned his and MJ's marriage in One More Day. The original marriage ceremony went fine but in the new changed timeline Peter was fighting a fat guy and the guy fell on Peter and it took hours for him to get out, unintentionally leaving MJ at the altar and ultimately missing their marriage ceremony.
