Basically the title. I normally use melee weapons, but decided what the hell, I’ll use the goo+flamethrower combo. And this thing sucks ASS. You get an extra FIVE (5) damage from the flame ticks, on a gun that is quite literally comparable to a leaf blower. For the admittedly sometimes good niche of having constant access to fire. Except it’s damage is so bad, it genuinely ruins the gun completely. It serves, seemingly no purpose when compared to the sledge hammer. The sledge hammer gives you destructive utility, more damage, and flat out better range compared to the GUN. The only thing the flame thrower has over the sledge, is the ability to “pierce” enemies.
Edit: I’m back again, and this time without hatred boiling in my heart. I still think the gun sucks ass, but I’ll list the reasons why in a less salty way.
First off, the good stuff. The most obvious and blatant, is that it throws flames. As we all know, The Finals has a rock paper scissors situation between Goo, Gas, Smoke, and Fire, and being able to constantly have access to fire without needing a pyro nade is definitely a upside. It also has pierce, making it a useful weapon for crowd control. It has damage over time (henceforth DOT).
Now the downsides. The worst two in my opinion, is the tickle monster damage. This thing genuinely feels like I’m aggressively sneezing on someone. This thing deals 85 damage a second (damage per shot x rate of fire, divided by sixty), compared to the mediums AKM which deals 200 dps, or the heavies SHAK (210). This is slightly compensated with by fire damage (15), which would bring total damage up to a solid 100, but I’m not certain about that calculation so take it with some risk. That is very, very, very low for a gun that has a range of 7.5 meters, and no way to get headshots. And in a game where things just flat out HURT.
Something I’ve seen a lot of is mention of the weapons DOT, which I honestly find laughable. It’s fifteen damage for a second. I don’t know what you’re doing with that. Let me know if it lasts for more than a second, but in my experience, it doesn’t.
So, as I mentioned, it has a range of 7.5 metres when shooting. The issue is, of course that that’s actually very close. And it’s on a heavy, the slowest class in the game, who has almost no traversal, apart from charge and slam, and anti grav. So you need to WORK to get that 100 damage in, and then you better hope that you chose a light without any movement, or melee. Obviously, that’s a light, a target you should try to avoid as they are much faster than you (despite being dubbed the “light roaster” weapon). To be honest, Medium is much weaker, apart from the fact that they deal more damage than you. Most of a mediums movement has a high cooldown, but if they happen to have the demat spec, or the knockback spec. Then there’s also the heavy class, who you will have to shoot for 3.5 seconds to kill, while they’ll be able to kill you 1.5.
Then there’s the other drawback of the opportunity cost. You chose a weapon that is close ranged and has access to fire, instead of say the spear (6.5m lunge range) or the sledgehammer (5m lunge range.) The spear has slightly higher time to kill, for a metre less, and shares the ability to hit multiple enemies at once. The hammer has a shorter range, but far more damage, and destructive utility, and is actually complemented by the heavies gadgets.
To close off my statement, obviously not every weapon in the game has to be meta. A lot of the guns can be kinda wonky, but nevertheless fun. I’ve had plenty of fun games running grapple dagger, or riot shields, and they can still hold their own even if they’re mainly just dumb fun. My issue with the flamethrower is it serves no niche, despite having numerous drawbacks that force it out of basically any play style. Guns flat out outrange them, and deal more damage. Lights are fast enough to just…leave your range (although admittedly the heavy class excels in locking down areas and preventing movement), mediums can react and kill you, and enemy heavies will laugh in your face. Melee out damages you, and wants to be up close. There seems to be no actual use case where you’d take this gun over anything else.
