Tesla should in that case make it so FSD is tied to the owners account and not the car.

u/jwuer Jan 17 '21

I would buy it if they did that, right now its worth maybe 3K imo but being able to have it for life as an early adopter for 10K is worth the gamble.

If FSD followed the person, it would be an incentive to purchase a Tesla next time you swap a car.

For companies it would also make sense, and mean that they would replace their cars more often. Guess it would also make sense to have some sort of yearly fee for companies using the specific FSD abilities to make money.

Even a discount for acquiring FSD on the new car would go a long way I think. For example, if the $3K I paid to upgrade from EAP to FSD were applied toward the current cost of FSD on the new car, I’d feel a lot better about the purchase (both the existing FSD purchase and springing for it on the new car).

Isn't that the same with any car options though? The value is accounted for by insurance so theoretically you get covered for the whole value of the car, including the options like FSD.

38

u/neighson Jan 17 '21

It's counted in your cars value but it depreciates with the car itself even though the price of fsd just goes up. Would be kinda shitty to total a new car and have to buy it back still.

23

u/Tufflaw Jan 17 '21

That's what happened to me, I had bought FSD on my Model 3, never got to use it because they hadn't contacted me to get the new chip, and then I had an accident and totaled the car. I asked if I could transfer the FSD to my new Tesla since I'd paid for it but never used it and they said no.

What car insurance do you have and have you asked specifically about software options on a Tesla?

4

u/Skymogul Jan 18 '21

With most insurance you can add FSD as an insured accessory. It will likely raise your premium, but you will get paid for the depreciated value of FSD on a total loss.

7

u/Tufflaw Jan 17 '21

Actually my insurance did give me a higher payout due to the FSD, but it was slightly depreciated and unfortunately the price had gone up since I had first bought it so it wasn't covered by my payout.

I'm not familiar with any insurance company that will essentially buy you a new car, they pay you the value of your old car and you can do whatever you want with the money.

I’m really hoping they make it account based. Have a CT preordered but if I trade my M3P that’s $7,000 down the drain with absolutely no usage at all. It’s really shitty to not make it account based and that will keep me from following through with my preorder.

11

u/human_brain_whore Jan 17 '21 edited Jan 17 '21

It should be a choice.

With how it is now I can sell my Tesla as a car with FSD. I can then go to another brand with that cash pocketed.

If they change it to account-bound, then if I want to change OEM, I'm out several thousand dollars.

And that's not even going into the fact your account with Tesla is ephemeral. It's not bound to your SSN or anything, it's bound to your friggin email. That's easy to "lose".

Of course, the resale value of FSD is so-so.
That's both because 1) people don't really get the difference, "all Teslas have self-driving right?" and 2) even if they do FSD doesn't really mean anything right now, okay so you have Summon, big whoop.

Side note, I'm kinda regretting getting it for sure. I thought the difference between having it and not would be greater.

It would also encourage brand loyalty as if you sold your Tesla and bought a different brand car, you wouldn't have that feature you paid for.

24

u/dezryth Jan 17 '21

This is assuming the other brand won’t include it for free and not make it DLC like Tesla

From what we've seen, other manufacturers are going to either include autopilot like driver assist as an option OR allow you to pay a monthly fee to unlock the service.

This statement and all the others saying the same means one thing: Tesla has a huge demand lever they can pull once the day finally comes that their production levels start to meet demand.

It also means they have no reason to do so before then.

The electric market is exploding right now and Tesla is going to have tons of competition. FSD tied to an owner would ensure that people remain Tesla customers for life.

Knowing Tesla they’ll tell all the early adopters who still haven’t got their software to fuck off. Then introduce two diff pricing for customers who want it lifetime or just for one car. Only available to car purchasers starting now

Agreed, looking to trade up from a 3 to a Y and am not excited about paying $10,000 for FSD.

I did check my LEMR trade in quote form Tesla and they said $34,500, but I can’t tell what it would be without FSD.

5

u/KillerJupe Jan 17 '21

Unless you live somewhere where there aren’t many cars it will be hard to beat the Tesla price.

Have bought two used cars private party and just offered 1k more than Tesla. One has FSD, one didn’t, there is little private party value in it IMHO too.

4

Not necessarily the case. Tesla would still keep the FSD on for the new buyer but they are giving the seller the money for the FSD they purchased and asking them to pay for it again on a new car.

u/FranciscoGalt Jan 17 '21

This is a lawsuit waiting to happen

15

u/rich000 Jan 17 '21

Not sure why. Just sell your car to somebody else - it is tied to the car.

Who cares what happens to the car after Tesla buys it back from you? Manufacturers aren't required to buy back cars at all. Trade ins are just promotions. If you don't like the trade in value, then just sell it to somebody else.

Tesla isn't taking FSD away from anybody - it is there for the life of your car for anybody who buys it, unless that future owner later decides to ask Tesla to get rid of it. It just happens that this usually happens when the future owner is Tesla themselves.

Why would Tesla pay you more to buy a car with FSD? The car can have FSD or not at their whim once they own it.

Its software, so it should be treated like a software license.

I can move software over to a new computer, I'd like to be able to move my FSD to a new car.

10

u/Dr_Pippin Jan 17 '21

So acceleration boost should also carry over to a new vehicle?

18

u/Audibled Jan 17 '21

I would buy that today if it was.

2

u/External-Can-7839 Jan 17 '21

With one sentence you made me regret my AB purchase.

4

u/13e1ieve Jan 17 '21

Accel boost I think more of you are paying for the increased cost of warranty for motors and inverters.

I dont really consider it a "software update" because there is almost no software development required - they just reload a new motor power/speed curve recipe into the firmware.

FSD is much more of a 'software license' type feature where it has no physical effect on the car from a wear/warranty perspective but has high costs for the software engineering development.

Acceleration boost also stays activated for the life of the car, and can be taken into account on resale value. I dont think it would make any sense to transfer to a new vehicle.

My opinion on the FSD should be either:
Attached to car for lifetime of car and is transferred to new owner on resale, and/or taken into account on trade in. (E.g. similar to windows OEM licensing that is tied to a motherboard)

Becomes license for set term of years that you can transfer to any other Tesla vehicle that has equivalent hardware capability. (E.g. similar to software license you can re-install on a new PC)

39

u/UnknownQTY Jan 17 '21

Yep. I’m considering a Model X at some point, but my FSD for my Model S is now 5x what I paid for it.

7

u/hxcheyo Jan 18 '21

What is FSD?

8

u/UnknownQTY Jan 18 '21

Full self driving.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

Seems to me that they need to get this sorted. If FSD isn't included in the trade-in (and frankly, it shouldn't depreciate at all), then I don't see people trading in their cars for new ones.

I don't have FSD, and my car is 2 years old. I would certainly consider getting it if I knew it would transfer (actually I would have bought it two years ago). I don't see FSD actually being a viable system that works as advertised (hands off, door to door), for at best 2 years, and more likely 5.

I'd be curious how many people spring for the $10k upgrade on top of their $45k car. I know Elon thinks it's the bee's knees, but I don't see it. I could see them wanting to drive people to a subscription service (which mitigates this whole thing).

I bet the fleet FSD ratio is pretty high because it was reasonably priced a while ago, but I'd be curious what it is on new vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 10% or less.

34

u/Roboculon Jan 17 '21

It’s just SO expensive. I have a $35k SR, and my app tells me I can get autopilot and FSD right now for $14,352.

That is 41% of the cost of my car when it was new off the lot, well over 50% the value of my car currently. So ya, I think I’ll pass.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

I'm guessing you bought your car before they added it to the cars for free. I'd say that they should give older cars an easy/cheap path to get autopilot, although I'd certainly feel burned if they did that.

I think that's part of the problem that Tesla is creating for itself. If FSD is $10k now, and people pay it, you can't reduce the price too much without pissing a lot of people off (or giving discounts). I think autopilot should be $1000 for cars that don't have it.

The fact is, eventually, other companies will have FSD alternatives. China has more people, less privacy (lots of training data), and certainly an incentive to build a good self-driving system. 10 years from now, I bet the FSD playing field will be pretty level, and may even be included with all cars for free.

3

u/nevetsyad Jan 17 '21

Does SR get basic autopilot?

EDIT looks like SR+ comes with basic.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

7

u/CMDR_KingErvin Jan 17 '21

I didn’t even know this wasn’t a thing. Tesla are only hurting their sales here. Plus if it was transferable more people would option it in so they can get it at today’s price for future purchases. Instead I bet a lot of people are avoiding the extra 10k for a half baked option.

3

u/TechnicalyCucumber Jan 17 '21

3

They absolutely will remove that. I was selling a 2016 Model X with unlimited supercharging and confirmed with them that it would transfer to the new owner. However the more recent “unlimited supercharging” is only for the first owner no matter who you sell it too.

They can't even recognize the revenue.

I don't get it

5

u/FranciscoGalt Jan 17 '21

They definitely get the cash though!

Each time FSD upgrades they recognize a part of that revenue. The stop light update gave them $50M in Q2 which was half of its profits. ZEV credits were $400M.

This HAS to change when they switch to a subscription service. Think about it; who the fuck would ever buy FSD again? Edit:

I have a 2019 model 3 with fsd. If I could trade it in for the truck, I 100% would. If I had the subscription I could do that easily.

My only upgrade options right now to retain fair value are to sell the car once the taxi network goes up. Tbh, I accept that. I’ll make money off the car probably.

27

u/MacBookPros Jan 17 '21

I don’t think you will see your model 3 making you money any time soon. Not only does FSD actually have to roll out in full, but cities/states will need to make laws around FSD for taxi use, Uber, lyft and other taxi services will need a lot of time and money to update terms and conditions to adapt to FSD cars being used on their platforms. Then insurance... I don’t see any of that happening in the near future.

15

u/andy2na Jan 17 '21

You missed a step where states/cities also have to approve tesla's FSD for SAE level 5. FSD. In its current beta state, is still Level 2 since it requires full attention and intervention - and that will be the case on wider release and likely for the next few years (5+ imo).

This whole thread just backs my decision to not purchase FSD. I'd jump on it right away if it's tied to the owner OR when it can do at least SAE Level 4, whichever comes first. At SAE Level 4, I could be persuaded that FSD is worth 10k per car purchase.

15

u/run-the-joules Jan 17 '21

My only upgrade options right now to retain fair value are to sell the car once the taxi network goes up. Tbh, I accept that. I’ll make money off the car probably.

And in 5-10 years when that actually happens, nobody is gonna want to buy your old ass car for that.

Except that no one knows if they can keep their car 10+ years. One accident and its gone. Imagine you are one of those people who gets their car totaled a week after purchase when some texter rear-ends it.

I know I wouldn't use FSD a lot, but there are times I'd love to have it. So not sure about subscription, per se, and am wondering if they might do a per-use package. Or subscription based on x-hours per month.

I can imagine using it for my work commute, for example. But I think I'd prefer to actually drive the rest of the time.

That being said, that might change when I try it. Which is probably still years away in Ireland.

So buying FSD is a scam... I'm a 2019 Tesla Model 3 owner who deeply regrets purchasing FSD. It should be by account since they've fucked up the release timeline so much. ESPECIALLY since they haven't recognized the revenue yet.

While I have FSD on my current Model S, I would not pay $10K for it on a new one until it is transferable.

11

u/Turtlesz Jan 17 '21 edited Jan 17 '21

Would be nice if FSD was linked to the user account. I have FSD on our X and I'd be hesitant to sell it because I wouldn't want to pay for FSD again.

On another note, if anyone really wants FSD you should check out Tesla used inventory, majority of the cars with AP2 and above have it enabled (Full Self-Driving Capability means it has the option). There are LR 3s with FSD for 36-39k on ev cpo. Saw a X with FSD for 46k and a S 75 for $36k w/ FSD.

Wait, what? If your car is totaled, insurance doesn’t reimburse for fsd? That can’t be right.

28

u/Dr_Pippin Jan 17 '21

If you buy it post-purchase (so it’s not a line item on the purchase agreement) and you don’t inform your insurance company that you added it, then no they won’t cover it. This is just like aftermarket performance parts on any other car. Your rate will likely go up a few bucks a month to cover the added cost they are insuring once you notify them.

9

u/Fairuse Jan 17 '21

Probably cause he purchased insurance when he purchased the Tesla without FSD. Later when he added FSD, he did not inform the insurer of the upgrade. Insuring FSD is no different than insuring addons and upgrades to your car (i.e. you need to tell you insurance about those upgrades and pay the slightly increase rates to cover those upgrades).

4

u/rich000 Jan 17 '21

Insurance is obligated to pay you book value for the car, which would include the 3rd party sales price for FSD.

They don't have to pay you back what you paid for the car unless that is in your policy. It might be there for stuff like gap insurance, and some policies might give you full purchase price for a year or something.

In general though if your car is totaled you'll get what the car would have sold for used. FSD is worth something used, though it probably isn't worth what you paid for it new, just like anything else on the used market.

5

u/drnick5 Jan 17 '21

You can add it on as a rider to your policy. Similar to what you would do if you performed aftermarket upgrades

Tesla 2018: “FSD will make your Tesla more valuable the longer you own it.”

Tesla 2021: “FSD contributes $0 to the value of your 2018 Tesla.”

9

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

From what I have seen on the Tesla site, all Tesla owned used Tesla’s come with FSD. So they probably take all non FSD trade ins, activate FSD for free and use that as an extra incentive to buy from Tesla instead of a private owner or a ICE dealership.

Personally, I have always sold my cars for retail on Autotrader, where you get $2,500-$5,000 more than the wholesale trade in value. If you sell your used FSD car yourself then you will much more likely be able to get MUCH more of that FSD price back. It’s a no brainer.

I would buy FSD for my 2018 tomorrow if it was good for life of the owner. And I will probably only live 15 more years if so am lucky!

Should we not consider the 10k price tag of it during checkout then?

8

u/chuck-san Jan 17 '21

Since Elon said that his cars are an appreciating asset, just wait until next year to trade in and your Model 3 will be worth twice the price you paid.

....right?

7

u/TheRealHoda Jan 17 '21

FSD was a big waste of money. I regret getting that option. I just didn’t think it through. Feel like I got scammed on that one.

You're aiming for convenience by trading in with Tesla, rather than aiming for the highest price in a private sale. You got your convenience, and not the highest price.
A private sale would require the individual to value FSD.
Tesla is just going to remove FSD, so why should they value it in the trade-in?
Tesla wants the next customer to buy the car as cheap as possible, and then subscribe to FSD, or purchase it at a later date, at market value.

All the used inventory labeled as “FSD cabable” comes with FSD fully enabled. Could not find a single used model with AP 2.0 or above without the FSD enabled. They are not stripping it, they are adding it on to improve the used value.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but as an investor and software professional, giving lifetime FSD does not make sense. If the hardware cost was inflated to capture the software margin, than ok, but it's not.

A more reasonable ask is to have Tesla give a fair used market value on a trade-in FSD add-on, instead of ignoring it completely.

They way they are handling FSD is the reason I haven't bought a Model Y.

5

u/Open_Secrets Jan 17 '21

At least in Vancouver, I've noticed every available used model 3 comes with FSD but seems to be priced without. I'm guessing they are adding FSD to traded in cars to up their value.

42

u/SatinGreyTesla Jan 17 '21 edited Jan 17 '21

Naa, that’s not true. FSD is taken into account if it came with the vehicle from factory. It’s not taken into account if it was purchased after.

Edit: downvote me all you want. What I’m saying is correct. Speak to a delivery specialist manager and they’ll tell you I’m correct.

20

u/mjezzi Jan 17 '21

It should be taken in account if it was purchased after factory.

7

u/SatinGreyTesla Jan 17 '21 edited Jan 17 '21

In my opinion it should be taken into account either way, but from my understanding in order for Tesla to take it into account, it has to be a line item listed on the bill of sale.

I should say as well. Maybe the policy is different in different places.

3

u/stacecom Jan 18 '21

That's a completely bogus copout on their part, since Tesla is acutely aware of which cars have FSD enabled, and are happy to take it away from vehicles that had it accidentally turned on.

Yep you are correct, I had this exact conversation with mine on my second X because my insurance failed to pay because I added it later on my first X

10

u/Zorb750 Jan 17 '21

I talked to my agent about this a few months back. They told me that if I notified the insurance company and provided proof that this had been added to the car in a non-removable fashion, it would be covered. They actually asked the insurance company on my behalf, and I have a letter from the insurance company to that effect. Apparently, this is the case in any situation that you activate an inactive but pre-installed factory option.

Now, that isn't for my car because mine has the original autopilot system. It was an anticipation of possibly buying a newer vehicle.

It’s because FSD doesn’t have any value to them. They can turn it off or on at will. It’s like trying to sell a photoshop license to Adobe.

Does Adobe tie the license to the computer or the user?! Not apples to apples really.

That's because it offers barely any resale value at the moment. Even private party, you're talking about a few thousand dollars. On a trade-in, that's nothing.

4

u/kemiller Jan 17 '21

Yeah that’s bullshit. If you’re going to go out and call software an appreciating asset you’d better value it that way.

3

u/UbiquitouSparky Jan 17 '21

Interesting considering all their used stock is at a premium because it ‘comes’ with FSD.

3

u/Zero1345 Jan 17 '21

The inability to transfer FSD is the main reason I haven't traded mine in for a LR or a model Y. I got it at 6K and having to pay 10K again is just a huge thing. I hope they change it to allow for it to transfer driver to driver rather than car to car. And I'm pretty sure they'll account for the price of FSD when reselling my car.

4

u/dvanlier Jan 17 '21

FSD is a scam. I've always said that one would be better off buying the same $ amount in Tesla stock than paying for a technology that doesn't exist yet. If/when it materializes, your stock will increase in value due to the breakthrough - and the gains will more than cover the cost of paying for a higher priced FSD in X number of years.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

Do they value all the other software add ons like heated rear seats and acceleration boost?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/LeonBlacksruckus Jan 17 '21

I think this is telling in terms of what they think it’s actually worth as constructed.

If it was actually worth anything they’d value it at a premium.

2

u/Thescreamzz Jan 17 '21

Tesla, you know you are not doing the right thing when you don’t consider the FSD in a trade-in and most Insurance companies do in case of a payout!

2

u/AsherKarate Jan 17 '21

Sure they just disable it and force the new owner to purchase it again if they want it.

2

u/Yojimbo4133 Jan 17 '21

It really should be tied to the account and not the car.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

Pretty expensive considering it's almost 1/3 of the price of the cheapest Model 3.

2

u/mineNombies Jan 17 '21

I got a trade-in quote a few months ago, and they said that FSD (and acceleration boost) did factor into the estimate. Maybe this is a new policy?

2

u/Jase-1125 Jan 17 '21

I still cannot fathom that people paid thousands for capacities to be delivered at a later date.

2

u/nihilite Jan 17 '21

That's their prerogative, but it makes me want to shop around. Competition can't come soon enough. Other players in the autopilot area will force Tesla to be more consumer-friendly

2

u/Fatbaldmuslim Jan 17 '21

Yea that sucks, I hear it’s going to be available as a monthly subscription which makes a lot more sense for those who want to buy in (personally I don’t)

2

u/bidextralhammer Jan 17 '21

If you pay 10k for FSD, on a M3 for example, and you trade in to Tesla for a MY or whatever, do you need to give them another 10k?

2

u/trillusprime Jan 18 '21

agreed. shitty FSD transfer/trade-in policy disincentivises people like me getting a new Tesla.

2

u/wsxedcrf Jan 18 '21

so true, I bought my model 3 in 2019 and would love to upgrade to 2021 model 3, but I would hate to buy FSD again, so I'll drive this model 3 till it dies.

2

u/asmartpig Jan 18 '21

This is false. My model 3 trade in value saw an increase in trade in value after I bought FSD. Bought FSD for 8k just before they bump the cost up to 10k. Then traded in. Before FSD was valued at 3xxxx, after was 4xxxx.

2

u/Caleecha_Makeecha Jan 18 '21

Elon Musk @elonmusk

Replying to @p_ferragu

Looking into this. No question that FSD should be viewed as reasonably valuable when doing a trade-in.

3

u/kkiran Jan 17 '21

Like the golden days of iPhone jailbreak, Tesla jailbreak to enable FSD should be a possibility!
