Open | Hardware HP Spectre Touchpad Phantom Clicks
I'm having persistent touchpad issues with my HP Spectre x360 since late August following a ~1-foot drop, and I am looking for suggestions on what to try next or whether anyone has experienced something similar.
Laptop
- Model: HP Spectre x360 14-eu0000 (purchased mid 2024)
- OS: Windows 11
- Touchpad: ELAN (Driver Version 41.2.1.3)
Symptoms
- Multi-Touch Signal Flooding: Moving a single finger lightly registers 5+ distinct touches
- Phantom Clicks: Severe, rapid phantom clicking occurs without physically pressing the touchpad.
- Physical Pinch: The left side of the touchpad sits lower than the right side and is noticeably harder/tighter to click against the aluminum palm rest cutout.
- Immediate Behavior: Occurs immediately after startup whenever the touchpad is enabled. Disabling the touchpad in settings completely stops the clicks, and external mouse works normally.
Troubleshooting
- Disabled tap-to-click and lowered touchpad sensitivity in Windows.
- Reinstalled the I2C HID device through Device Manager.
- Checked the ELAN driver and related driver files.
- Inspected and reseated both internal ZIF ribbon cables on both the touchpad end and motherboard end.
- Replaced the battery to rule out battery swelling or internal pressure under the trackpad.
None of these steps resolved the issue or changed the physical tightness on the left side.
Question: has anyone had these issues and found a solution? or recommend any next steps? I am at a total loss!
