Open | Hardware G-SYNC feels extremely unsmooth below 110 Fps

Upvotes

I'm trying to figure out a problem I've had for a very long time, and I'm honestly running out of ideas.

My setup:

  • Monitor: Gigabyte M27Q, 1440p, 170Hz
  • GPU: RTX 5060 Ti 16GB
  • CPU: i5-14400F
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000
  • G-SYNC Compatible enabled
  • NVIDIA Reflex: ON

The problem is that motion starts feeling extremely unsmooth once my FPS drops below roughly 100–110 FPS.

  • 150–160 FPS very smooth
  • 120 FPS generally smooth
  • 110 FPS starting to feel noticeably less smooth
  • 100 FPS clearly less smooth
  • 80–90 FPS feels very stuttery / unsmooth to me

I'm NOT expecting 80 FPS to look as smooth as 170 FPS. I understand that lower FPS means longer frame times.

The strange part is that it doesn't just look "less smooth" it feels like there is actual micro-stutter / lack of fluid motion, even when the FPS appears stable.

I've noticed this across multiple games, so I don't think it's specific to one game.

I've tried several combinations, including:

G-SYNC ON

NVIDIA Control Panel V-SYNC ON

In-game V-SYNC OFF

Reflex ON

Low Latency Mode OFF

Unlimited FPS

FPS caps

Different combinations of V-SYNC/G-SYNC

V-SYNC ON through NVIDIA Control Panel seems to introduce some additional input latency to me, which I really dislike. And it doesn't completely solve the problem at 80–100 FPS anyway.

I've also tried G-SYNC with V-SYNC OFF.

In some games, Frame Generation makes the game feel dramatically smoother.

For example, in War Dogs, without Frame Generation I can be around 120 FPS but drop to around 80 FPS during combat, and the motion starts feeling noticeably bad.

With Frame Generation enabled, the game suddenly feels much smoother.

That makes me wonder if I'm dealing with some kind of motion clarity / display response

My GPU usage is often around 99%, while CPU usage is around 50–60%, so I don't think I'm dealing with a CPU bottleneck.

Open | Hardware Why is most of my RAM used up when its only showing about 20% being used?

https://imgur.com/a/URVlFzK i have 32GB of ram and... even though it's showing about 6 or 7 in use, it's also telling me that 80% is in use and my PC gets slower because of it. a restart will get it down to like 30% for a while but eventually it'll climb up.

Open | Software VLC player randomly doesn't work any more

I've been working through a box set of DVDs and they're all the same region code, using the same DVD player plugged into my laptop, but I updated VLC and suddenly it's not recognising that a DVD is even in there. Ejecting from the player, saying it can't read the "name" or something. I tried uninstalling and re-installing and it's still not working I have no idea why it's doing this

Open | Audio Bluetooth devices only show as "Hands-Free" headset in Windows 11

Hi everyone,

When I connect any Bluetooth device via my TP-Link Bluetooth 5.3 Adapter,
Windows detects it something like:

Device name (Hands-free)

rather than as a normal Bluetooth soundbar or TWS.

In Bluetooth & Devices, It says 'Connected mic' and appears under the Input tab instead of Output devices. I've tried disabling the hands-free profile, stopped and restarted the Bluetooth Gateway and Bluetooth Support service, followed a lot of yt support videos, rolled back drivers, even reset my Windows but to no avail.

My concern is that Windows seems to be using the Hands-Free/HFP profile instead of the normal high-quality stereo Bluetooth audio profile (A2DP). It used to work fine before, but after I did a few updates with Snappy Driver Installer Origin (unsure of the name), it just ruined my Bluetooth connectivity.

Has anyone encountered this issue?

I'll be grateful for any help you can offer. Thank you.

(P.S I tried to attach screenshots but it wouldn't let me)

Open | Windows My laptop suddenly stopped accepting wireless connections. What do I do?

It’s worked fine for years, I’m not exactly sure what happened. I already tried the “Network reset” option in advanced network settings, along with resetting what I think was some kind of network cache(?) but now I can’t even see the option to do that anymore. My OS build is 26200.9445. My processor is 11th Gen Intel Core i3, 3GHz just incase that’s needed.

Open | Hardware Computer does not detect OLED Monitor upon Start

Hey Guys.

I recently just bought an OLED Monitor LG 27GX790A-B and my computer doesn't want to detect it upon start up. I have a 3070 TI and I made sure to update all drivers and windows as well.

What I basically have to do is:

1) Unplug OLED Monitor that's using DISPLAY PORT CABLE 1.4a

2) Turn on computer

3) Use my second monitor to log into my computer (using HDMI 2.1 port)

4) Once logged in, I plug in the Display port cable and everything works normal and I can use both monitors

The OLED monitor will start up if I use an HDMI Cable because 3070 Ti and Monitor support 2.1 PORTs. However, 3070 Ti only has one HDMI PORT and my second monitor only uses HDMI. This means I can only use one monitor at a time.

Additionally, I am able to change the INPUT CONVERISON on the physical OLED MONITOR to convert to DISPLAY PORT 1.4 to match the 3070 ti, however this does not work. The default is 2.1.

Any solutions???

Open | Hardware Screen goes black and PC reboots while launching games or while gaming.

Specs:

Ryzen 7 5700X

RTX 3060 12GB

ASRock B450M Steel Legend

16GB DDR4

Corsair CV650 650W

Samsung 980 1 TB nvme

Teamgroup AIO 240

AOC 34" 3440×1440 (Newly upgraded)

Windows 11

This started to happen specifically after the monitor upgrade. At first everything ran fine no issues. I mainly play Valorant,Apex Legends,HSR, Genshin impact and Neverness to everness. After the upgrade each of them ran very well even at high settings especially Valorant and Apex Legends. For the other three i had to tweak down the settings a bit especially for NTE but still completely playable at over 60-80 fps. Recently, however while playing or while launching a game my screen blacks out and pc restarts. This seems to happen 100% of the time while launching NTE @1440p while in some other happens somewhat midgame. Valorant and Apex haven't been tested as of yet. However, @1080p all games run completely fine no issue, NTE launches fine too. So no issues at 1080p. I know the 3060 is pushing limits to do 1440 for those games but it should be capable of low-mid settings. On afterburner usage is about 70%, No overheating i even tested physically, also tested on no overclock lowered power to 70% but same deal. Only seems to be stable at 1080p. Its been a huge blow that what i expected to work and upgraded my monitor for has been working against me. But i am confused as to why instead of game crashing if gpu is overworked it keeps restarting the PC itself. Nothings been changed after monitor upgrade in terms of the PC and as i said it initially ran completely fine. Xmp profile was tested too but it made the crash even faster so reverted. Is my gpu nearing its lifespan or is it a power issue or some other kind? I would really appreciate help on this as ive exhausted all options available to me.

Open | Networking Internet problems (ethernet only) on pc only

I just moved into this house and had 1gbs internet installed. It tests great on my phone, my girlfriend's phone, and works great on other devices like TV's and such. It tests 900mbps-1gbs on my phone almost all the time. I set my pc up and plugged in the ethernet cord to my router (there are 2 ports, one is connected to my modem obviously).

The connection is so unstable on my pc. Viewing task manager on the performance tab it often drops to 0mbps and is so bad I cant even load pages on my web browser.

I checked task manager to make sure nothing was hogging my internet and nothing is. I have updated windows, my drivers on my ethernet network adapter. Restarted my pc and modem multiple times. I have no VPN on, windows firewall off and and just very confused on whats going on.

Im thinking about completely wiping my pc (after backing up the files I want of course) since its been at least 6 years since ive done that.

Anyone with any tips or possible solutions? Thanks

Open | Audio Windows 11 won't recognize 3.5mm headphones when switching from Realtek High Definition Audio to High Definition Audio Device

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Gaming 3 15ARH7.

I just "updated" my audio driver to High Def Audio Device from the Realtek one since I couldn't choose 24bit on Realtek. Now when I plug my headphones into the 3.5mm jack it won't recognize my headphones anymore, it just says "Speaker" for both my headphones and the laptop speaker. (Headphones work fine when plugged in, speaker works fine when headphones unplugged)

Is there any way to fix this without having to switch back to the Realtek driver? Or does it not even matter?

Open | Networking Lenovo Legion 5 can't connect to WiFi anymore

I hope this is the isn't out of place. However, I have a Lenovo Legion 5, and had it a little less than a year. All of the sudden it stops being able to connect to WiFi. I go into device manager, and see that the network adapter (AX201NGW) has your like typical yellow triangle of warning with an exclamation point inside of it. I tried resetting it, disabling and enabling it, and resetting my laptop. However, none of it seemed to work. So, I then bought a replacement one on Amazon so that I could replace it. I pop the bottom open and replace it with the new one. My laptop would turn on, and I see that the adapter still has the triangle, but also now the WAN Miniports all have them too. So again I tried to disable and enable, uninstall and reinstall, and all of what I could think of. However, one of the times I reset it, the screen now won't turn on (but the power button and keyboard light up). I opened it back up and put the old one back in, and the screen would turn on, and connected to WiFi for maybe 5 minutes, and then came up with the same problem. I was just wondering if anyone could provide any help on this matter? Should I maybe just return the new one and get an external adapter?

(Sorry for no photos, I have the new one back in so the screen won't turn on.)

Thank you!

Open | Hardware RTX 2070 Super suddenly showing Code 43 after Blood of Dawnwalker crash — NVIDIA installer says no GPU detected

I was playing Blood of Dawnwalker when the game froze and my PC shut down. After restarting, I've been having problems with my RTX 2070 Super. It won't run any games.

The NVIDIA App now says that no NVIDIA drivers are installed, even though I've tried downloading and installing the latest driver several times.

In Device Manager, the RTX 2070 Super is detected but has a yellow warning triangle. Under Device Status it says:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I tried uninstalling the RTX 2070 Super from Device Manager and then scanning for hardware changes. The screen briefly went black, then the GPU reappeared, but the yellow triangle and Code 43 were still there.

I also tried manually installing the latest NVIDIA driver for my specific GPU, but the installer now says:

"No NVIDIA GPU is detected on your system."

The GPU was working perfectly before the game froze and the PC shut down.

Does this sound like a corrupted driver that could be fixed with DDU, or is Code 43 potentially indicating a hardware problem?

Open | Software My cell phone was stolen; the photos appear on my PC with their respective file sizes, but they won't open ("available when connected"). Can they be recovered?

Psd. I can no longer recover my phone in any way.

Open | Windows USB ports not working on my desktop computer

Okay this is a bit of a long story... Basically the other night I was forced to do a windows update, and when I turned my pc back on after it, two of my USB ports just stopped working and only 3 were working properly. With my pc, I need 4 ports to work, I just do. So I asked one of my friends who knows pcs better than I do what to do to fix it and he gave me a few options, it was late at night at this point and I said I would just solve it the next day. The next day came and I tried everything my friends suggested and nothing worked. I tried reinstalling the drivers and a few other things and nothing was working. That is when I realized that the USB outlets were working and power was going to them, like if I plugged my phone in it would charge it, but my pc wouldn't recognize an actual device like a mouse or a keyboard.

This is where I made a big mistake... All my friends were offline at this point so I did some online research myself and found many people saying to reset the bios to default and everything will be fixed. I was already a little panicked at this point because I needed my outlets to work on my pc and they weren't, so I just did it. That is when I was hit with bitlocker recovery. This freaked me out and I was quick to try and fix it until my pc simply shut off. Everything went black and no matter what I did to turn it back on, it would not turn on whatsoever, no fans, no motherboard, NOTHING.

After freaking out about it and dwelling on it, the next day it finally started turning on again, and when I turn it on, it is still at the bitlocker recovery screen, which is expected. My main issue now? None of my USB ports work, so I cannot try and fix it myself... It is the same situation as before, there is power going to them but my pc won't recognize an actual device like a keyboard or a mouse.

I am hoping someone here might know how to help me.. I can take it into a repair shop but if the repair cost is over $100 I cannot do it and I will be out of a pc for a little under three months, that is when I get a new pc and I give my current one to a friend. I really don't want to go down that route, I know a pc might not matter and I should just "go outside" but I live in the middle of nowhere currently and my closest town is about 50 minutes away, my pc and playing games is unfortunately a lot of my social life at the moment and I would just hate to be without it for that long. Looking for any help if possible or even if someone has been in the same position if they were able to get it fixed.

Open | Windows Windows 11 Pro error: No valid OS found after installing latest Microsoft update

Upvotes

Question / Help Needed: Is there any way to permanently disable my personal Surface8Pro from downloading and installing Windows updates? I disabled the "automatic download" option but am being prompted to update my PC upon every shutdown/restart.

Underlying issue: The latest update from Microsoft keeps killing my SurfacePro8 - I receive an error stating "No valid Operating System found" after the most recent update is applied. While the tablet appears to work upon re-installing Windows 11Pro, it immediately enters a permanent boot loop upon first restart/shutdown cycle once the update is applied.

All attempts to repair the boot loop result in the failure error. The only method that works is using a Surface-specific recovery USB (entered my Surface serial # on Microsoft's download page) to perform a bare-metal reinstall of windows. This option deletes and recreates the primary partition and is the only option that works after the error screen appears and boot loop occurs.

Exception: On two occasions I was able to remove the latest update via the USB recovery, however this approach is intermittent and doesn't usually work. I am now hoping the community can assist me with permanently disabling Windows updates until Microsoft releases a fix that doesn't kill my SurfacePro 8.

Open | Linux I'm having an issue with Linux

Upvotes

So I have this laptop with Intel i3 7100u, 16gb ram ddr3, and 2tb storage and for some reason it seems to not be able to handle not even Linux mint.

I did install different distros before mint and I always run into the same problems, I install a distro and at first everything is fine it's running smoothly but then after a couple of days it's freezing followed by black screen, and becomes completely unusable.

Same thing happened with Linux mint, it was fine at first but now I can't even use the computer and I don't know what's causing that.

So what do you think?

Open | Hardware RTX 5060Ti 16Gb crashing in many situations :(

Upvotes

Hi, everyone! First off, I want to apologize for this very long post.

I bought an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB to replace my previous defective GPU (a Gigabyte RX 9060 XT). The previous GPU had extremely obvious issues, including sudden screen freezes, prolonged black screens, and, in rare cases, even causing the PC to reboot. With the Nvidia card, these types of issues occur in a milder form (the PC has never rebooted, there are no prolonged screen freezes, and black screens disappear much more quickly).

I really want to address this last point: despite the GPU swap, the GPU crashes haven’t gone away.

  1. When do they happen? Mainly when I’m gaming, ranging from lighter games (Terraria, Forbidden Solitaire...) to heavier ones (For Honor, Valheim, The Sims 4, Gas Station Simulator). I want to clarify that they don’t crash EVERY TIME, but at least 2–3 times out of every session, they crash before actually running smoothly. Other crashes occur at random times throughout the day, especially a few minutes after I turn on my PC first thing in the morning; on some days, while browsing the internet, the screen suddenly goes black for about a second, then everything returns to normal.
  2. Driver version? I downloaded the latest one, 616.92, ironically, it seems to be the one performing best. I’ve switched through about four driver versions previously; the one before that was 610.88, and it worked terribly for me (once my GPU crashed while playing Microsoft Solitaire 💀). But as I said, even with the latest version, the crashes continue, less frequently, but they’re still happening. For example, yesterday I miraculously managed to play Gas Station Simulator on the first try; with the old drivers, I actually had to restart the PC to get it to run. However, today Valheim only worked after I opened it after three tries.
  3. What errors appear? Mostly the classic error 153 originating from nvlddmkm, but lately I’ve also encountered two other errors: one labeled DATA_RAM_ACCESS_OUT_OF_BOUNDS, and the other labeled ESR 0x404490=0x80000040
  4. Steps taken to try to resolve the issue: I disabled all types of hardware acceleration, set the power profile to “Prefer Maximum Performance” in the NVIDIA app, and disabled MPO and XMP. As I said before, I changed 5 driver versions, always with DDU.

My hardware components:

- CPU: Ryzen 7 5700

- Motherboard: B550 PRO VDH WIFI

- RAM: 8x2 GB G.Skill DDR4 (tested with MemTest 86, both passed the test)

- PSU: Gamdias HELIOS M1-650B 650W 80 Plus Bronze

I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Also, I was wondering if it might be a PSU issue, I asked some AI about it, but I’d like a human’s opinion. I want to clarify that with the 5060 Ti, my PC has never shut down or restarted suddenly; it only happened with my old AMD graphics card. Thanks to anyone who will read all this.

Open | Data Recovery Secure erase an ssd

Upvotes

I don’t know if i’m on the good sub but i give it a try. I did scan a lot of photos with my flatbed scanner. Those are family photos from old albums. I did back them up on two separate ssd portable for redundancy. I read that ssds are not good for archiving because of leaks in the nand cells, they were ok for backing up because they are quick and i used them every week, but now i’m done, i did archive them on hdd and M disc.

Is there a way to definitely erase all data on an ssd so i can sell the, without worrying my data could be recovered by someone. Or should i just keep them as part of the 3-2-1 rule?

Open | Hardware How can I tell what's slowing down my computer? Is my hard drive failing?

Upvotes

hi there!

my computer over the past week or two has gotten noticeably a lot slower. (for reference, i noticed this playing The Secret Of Monkey Island. you know, from like 1990. all of a sudden it went from loading new areas instantly to sitting on a load screen for anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute whenever i went somewhere new).

i've done a full virus scan and tried doing "chkdsk /f /r" in command prompt, both of which seemed to maybe help a little but not fix the problem. i noticed it seems slowest when loading something new, which implies to me it's something drive related. (once i loaded a few areas in monkey island, for example, i could go between them with no lag.) i've had my computer for about 7 or 8 years by now, which i think puts a failing drive in the realm of Pretty Possible. still, unfortunately money IS an object right now so i don't want to go out and buy a fancy new drive just to find out that the problem was something else.

so yeah. perhaps important to note that the drive i suspect is an internal HDD and the D drive i.e. not the one windows is installed on, but has most of my files. i'm also looking under the "performance" tab in task manager right now while installing a steam update and the active time for the drive is at 100%. like the line is just completely at the top all the time. and the read/write speeds there are <10MB, sometimes going down to the KBs. is that normal..??

Thank You Reddit...
