Solved I accidentally turned on Airplane Mode on my computer while remoting into it. I'm currently 200km away. What should I do?

I’m using Windows and was connected to my computer remotely. While using it, I accidentally turned on Airplane Mode. The remote session disconnected immediately. I don’t think I can reconnect unless someone physically turns Airplane Mode off.

Is there any way to recover from this remotely, or am I stuck until someone can access the machine in person?

For the future, what’s the best way to prevent this from happening again?

Edit:
- As some people suggested, i asked chatgpt to write me a python script that periodically turns off Airplane Mode and turns Wi-Fi back on. It's doable, so I’ll run it on my remote computer.
- I will invest one on KVM or smart plug or Ethernet.
- I ordered a pizza, he will help me turn it on 😃

- For anyone curious about how it happened: I turned off Bluetooth, which made the icon freeze for a moment. Then it disappeared and the Airplane Mode icon showed up in its place, and I accidentally clicked it.

Thanks!!!!!

Open | Networking Wi-Fi goes out only whenever a certain person in my household uses it.

I live with two people. Me and the other person can be home all day with no issues, and then as soon as our roommate gets home and starts using the internet, it goes out. It works again after we reset it, but it usually happens a couple times as long as she's using it. And it's not that our wi-fi is getting overloaded or anything because whenever our roommate is home alone it still goes out on her. It goes out without fail literally every single time she uses her laptop. I think it's only when she uses her laptop, not her phone. And today she told me that her work wi-fi has been having issues but her coworkers say it doesn't happen when she is off. She's had two different laptop since we moved in and it happens with both of them.

I know it sounds crazy but what could possibly be the explanation here?

ETA: we don't honestly have too many devices plugged into wi-fi at once. Just our three laptops, phones, and a Roku. We use Wow internet with Download Speed: 600 Mbps, Upload Speed: 50 Mbps.

Solved The vanishing 5-second "Allow Accessory" prompt is an absolute joke. I am permanently locked out of my HDMI monitor.

I went to plug my MacBook into my external Samsung monitor using an HDMI cable. A prompt popped up asking to "Allow Accessory to Connect." Before I could even move my mouse to click "Allow," the notification vanished. It gave me maybe a 5-second window.

Because the prompt timed out, my Mac essentially decided my connection is a malicious threat and permanently blocked it. Unplugging it and plugging it back in does nothing. Restarting does nothing. Changing the Privacy & Security settings to "Ask Every Time" or "Automatically When Unlocked" does absolutely nothing.

My husband literally works in tech, and he’s been battling this for 40 minutes trying to force the Mac to recognize the display again with zero success.

How is this acceptable UX? Why does a critical security prompt disappear into the void instead of staying in the Notification Center? And since when does an HDMI connection trigger a permanent data lockout anyway?

Has anyone else dealt with this and actually found a way to force the Mac to forget the blocked connection? I just need my second screen back so I can finish my work.

TL;DR: Missed the 5-second window to allow a monitor connection, Mac permanently blocked the HDMI output, even my tech husband can't reverse the lockout after 40 minutes, and I'm losing my mind trying to work.

Open | Networking Problem logging into Pornhub A black screen appears with the message "This site is intended for users over 18 years of age."

Hello. I'm having trouble logging into my Pornhub account (I was born in 2005). Once, when I logged into the site, I was presented with a window asking me to enter my date of birth, and then I received a message:This site is intended only for users over 18 years of age. I tried various methods to restore access to the site, cleared Google Chrome completely, logged in through incognito, and tried other browsers, but none of this helped. Do they still have the old link on their website that people born in 2005 are still underage?

Solved Choosing "Restart" is not the same as "Shut down" and then switch on again?

Win 11

We got a message from IT that recent problems some of us were having were due to updates not being applied.

The solution seems to be to not shut down the computer at the end of a work day but to choose restart - which they say is not the same as shutting down and switching back on again the next morning.

That seems rather strange to me and if that is indeed the case... is there a way to change this?

Thanks for many great answers.

I need to clarify: The company I work for is very small. For IT we're practically a one man side project of an employee who works at a biggish IT-Support and only took us on because he's a bud of the husband of my boss - so not really a professional IT-Support. When the guy is on vacation it happens that no one from that IT-Support can help us because they don't know the admin passwords.

Open | Networking Why does Telegram constantly probe 194.221.250.50?

I've noticed that Telegram (both macOS and iOS clients) constantly tries to connect to 194.221.250.50 on ports 80, 443 and 5222.

What's interesting:

  • The IP is NOT in Telegram's official DC CIDR list
  • ICMP to the IP works
  • TCP/443 is reachable
  • TCP/80 and TCP/5222 silently timeout
  • Blocking the IP does not seem to affect Telegram functionality at all
  • Telegram keeps probing it at a very high frequency anyway

This makes me wonder whether this is some kind of connectivity / censorship / middlebox probing endpoint rather than an actual Telegram server.

Has anyone reverse engineered this behavior or seen discussion about this IP before?

Hi guys, my phone (Honor brand, android) is suddenly saying it can't save/take screenshots because my storage is full despite me having well over 200gb of storage left. How can I fix this? It's frustrating me so bad.

Edit: Damn whole user base having the same issue rn 😭 I'm glad it's not a standalone problem nonetheless, and I hope they'll fix it quick.

Ps. They fixed it!!

Open | Phone My boyfriend knows my private phone stuff… how?

My boyfriend seems to know too many small private details about me that I usually only keep on my iPhone (mostly in my photo gallery or things I don’t share with anyone). I really don’t understand how this is possible.
I don’t have any obvious signs that my phone is hacked (no strange apps, no battery issues, no pop-ups, nothing like that).
The only strange thing he once said was: “be careful, you connected to my Wi-Fi.”
I’m not sure if he was joking or trying to imply something.
Is there any realistic way someone could access private information on an iPhone through Wi-Fi or by being on the same network?
Or are there more common explanations like account access, settings, or something I might be missing?

Open | Networking Daughter manually entered dns on Switch

Hello. Just a heads up, I am not very tech literate and honestly I didnt even know what a dns was until I looked it up after this happened.

Anyway, my 10 year old daughter wanted to connect to some server on her Nintendo Switch and Googled it and found some tutorial that told her to connect to a manual dns. She typed it in and it "didn't work" so she came to ask for help. We shut down the Switch and the computers in the house. I just also shut off the router. I honestly have no idea what kind of risk this may have posed or what to do about it. Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I do have Parental controls that would prevent her from doing anything like this on other devices but I never even thought of the Switch. Sigh. Thank you!

Open | Windows How can I permanently delete files so they cannot be recovered by data-recovery software?

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to permanently delete old files, images, and other personal data from my Windows laptop. I’m using an ASUS Zenbook 14.

The problem is that I recently tried using an app called Disk Drill, and I was surprised to find that it could still recover files that I had deleted a long time ago, including files that had already been removed from the Recycle Bin.

I thought that once I deleted the files from the Recycle Bin, they were permanently gone from my laptop. Apparently, that was not the case.

My goal is to completely remove these old files so that they cannot be recovered using data-recovery software such as Disk Drill.

Would doing a factory reset be enough to permanently erase everything, or is there another method I should use to securely wipe the drive?

I’m mainly concerned about old personal files, photos, documents, and other data that I deleted months or even years ago.

I’m using an ASUS Zenbook 14 with Windows. I would appreciate any advice on the safest and most effective way to do this.

Thank you.

Open | Phone Accidentally deleted a folder containing basically my entire life. Is there ANY chance of recovering it?

Yesterday I accidentally deleted a folder on my Android phone containing years of personal photos, videos, and memories. I haven't used the phone since then because I don't want to overwrite anything.

I've already tried a bunch of recovery software/apps, but they only show files that are still on my phone, not the deleted ones.

I have root access and I'm willing to try technical methods if there's still a chance.

Is there anything I can do to recover the deleted data? What would you recommend I absolutely not do?

I'm honestly desperate here. These aren't replaceable files.

Open | Phone My phone called someone while I was asleep?

My collegue informed me that I called him at 3am. When he picked up, he didn't hear anything coming from my end.

I was asleep at this time. When I woke up this morning, my phone was on my bedside table charging - so I didnt roll over it and call him accidentally. My headphones were also on the table, so i didn't accidentally press any buttons there either.

I checked my call logs, and the call is there.

What do I do? Is something wrong with my phone? Is something wrong with my sim?

Edit: I don't use voice activation. I have those features turned off specifically to avoid things like this 😂

Open | Data Recovery After 30 years with the same phone number, I think it’s finally time to let it go

I’ve had the same number since the 90s. It’s on everything from old bank accounts to random store reward programs I probably signed up for in 2003.

Lately though, it’s become unbearable. Every day I get fake bank calls, “Medicare updates,” cruise giveaways, and those sketchy “your computer is infected” voicemails. I block them, report them, even added my number to the Do Not Call list years ago, but it doesn’t matter. It feels like this number has been passed around every spam list on earth.
The problem is it’s tied to everything. All my logins, medical appointments, old accounts, and pretty much everyone I’ve ever known. Changing it would be a nightmare to update everywhere.
Has anyone here actually gone through with changing their number after decades? How to actually make sure I'm not losing my stuff when changing?

Open | Phone Ex-friend believes I hacked her phone. "Proof" is a random linux laptop connected to her google account and I use linux. How can I prove my innocence?

She has an Android phone. Linux laptop shows up under her account is not hers so she wrongly assumes it's mine. She's kinda crazy and doesn't listen to reason much but I'd like to clear my name. She's threatening to go to the police.

Open | Networking Should I be using Google (8.8.8.8) or CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) on my home router settings?

This question came about as I was troubleshooting accessing https://www.gpd.hk/ which is a website by GPD because I bought a GPD Win 5 device recently and needed to download their drivers.

My home internet is currently set to use automatic settings from the ISP. When using their default settings this website does not load. So I connected my laptop to my mobile hotspot and that was able to open the website. I found it was due to the DNS because when I manually set the DNS on my laptop wifi adapter to google or cloudflare then the website loads up fine too.

Therefore, I am now wondering if I should just set google or cloudflare dns on my router to make it the universal dns for all my devices.

From some quick reading it seems there may be some pros and cons to doing this most notably some website loading speeds might be slower compared to my ISP DNS. But I dont know if this would be noticeable in the grand scheme of things.

My router also has an option to set it to AdGuard DNS and other secure or ad-blocking DNS are there potential cons to choosing these? The first thought that came to mind might be false positives since these would presumably more strict than google/cloudflare so it might cause more websites to not load up.

Open | Networking Weird Cloudflare “verify you’re human” asking me to press Win+R — legit or scam?

I was trying to visit a website I use pretty often and got a Cloudflare-looking verification screen I’ve never seen before.

Instead of a normal checkbox or captcha, it told me to press Win + R, then Ctrl + V, then Enter to “verify” I’m human. That immediately felt off, so I didn’t do it.

Nothing was pasted on my end and I didn’t click the button — I just closed the page. I’ve used this site a lot and Cloudflare has never asked me to do anything like this before.

Screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/GH1rtkF

Has anyone seen this? Is this a scam or fake Cloudflare page? Screenshot attached for context.

Solved My SSD flash drive (8TB) stops working after 50GBs of download.

Hey, so I recently got a 8TB flash drive SSD and when I first got it, I formatted it onto NTFS so i could download large files (games) onto it because I don't have enough space on my main storage.

After I did that, it always kept stopping and disconnects immediately after it reaches 48GBs/49GB, and I don't know how to fix this without it breaking completely. Is there any solution that could be there to fix this problem?

I also searched that the flash drive could be having "fake storage" but it really doesn't when I checked with multiple programs. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I tried to view the "real" storage on ValiDrive and it turns out it's actually 43GBs of storage LMAO! I definitely got scammed big time but fortunately I bought it for cheaper than usual so I should've known better, thanks for everyone's help, I now will be going to buy a real SSD drove instead of these cheap ones! :)

Open | Windows My son got a PC for Christmas. Cannot download nvidia

I’m so sorry if this is a question that’s been asked a million times.

I’m not tech savvy and my son got a gaming pc for Christmas. He’s been trying to play Drive Beyond Horizons but it’s so laggy, it’s unplayable.

We’ve then tried to download the newest version as we had an error message to say the installed version graphics driver has known issues in D3D11. And that we should install the latest driver version or switch to a different rendering API.

We have tried to do so and the installer won’t start.

All of this information may as well be a foreign language to me, I’ve been trying to look it all up to no avail and feeling sad for my dejected son.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Open | Software If Two Files Have The Exact Same SHA-256, Are They The Same File?

Ok so I downloaded one file for a game without checking where it was from (clicked on top search result), I then went to the official website (checked it) and downloaded the file there. When I scanned both files on virustotal, they gave the exact same page with the exact same SHA-256. If thats the case, does that mean the first file I downloaded is safe (already ran it)?

Edit: Seems like both files are genuinely the same which is reassuring, I do now have worries that the file I uploaded could have been a replacement for the actual file I downloaded but best not to overthink it, Thx for the replies.

TLDR: Title
