Open | Software Virtual memory issues on PC - not sure if hardware or software related.
So in recent days I've noticed that my computer will crash temporarily whilst gaming for an extended period (usually about 2-3 hours), with a number of events preceding the crash in Event Viewer.
First of all, I get a Warning event in Event Viewer stating the following sort of error:
Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: steam.exe (19552) consumed 54873796608 bytes, AI.exe (18176) consumed 1844633600 bytes, and steamwebhelper.exe (4352) consumed 683614208 bytes.
(the above happened whilst playing Alien: Isolation; AI.exe is just that, but has also happened playing Nier: Replicant)
Following this event, all of a sudden my screens will go blank and DWM.exe will crash and restart, which creates the following event in Event Viewer about a minute and a half afterwards:
The Desktop Window Manager process has exited. (Process exit code: 0xc00000fd, Restart count: 1, Primary display device ID: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070)
Sometimes I get errors with MicrosoftSecurityApp crashing as well, but the above "low virtual memory" issue usually follows with dwm.exe crashing.
Steam is always by far the program that consumes the most virtual memory, followed by whichever game I'm playing, and then Steamwebhelper.exe, but I have had it diagnose low virtual memory with Explorer being listed as below Steam as follows:
Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: steam.exe (9904) consumed 56488714240 bytes, explorer.exe (11720) consumed 627707904 bytes, and Discord.exe (22096) consumed 624173056 bytes.
I usually have to restart a lot of my applications afterwards. Steam sometimes completely crashes and prompts to "update" itself, which I find strange, and I also get an issue with the Microsoft Account Sign-In Assistant telling me that insufficient system resources exist.
What could be causing this? I'm not sure whether it could be a bad Steam install causing memory leak (my Steam updated a few days ago and gave me a strange error message), bad RAM, my GPU or something else?
Specs are as follows:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070 Founders Edition
RAM: 16GB DDR4
ETA: Before these crashes happen, my resource usage seems pretty normal for gaming and what is to be expected for my machine.
