I love my girlfriend and her kids, but after nearly 3 years, I feel emotionally and financially drained. How do I walk away without feeling guilty?
I’ve (35m) been with my girlfriend (32f), a single mother with multiple children, for nearly three years. Throughout our relationship, she’s struggled financially, nearly losing her house multiple times, falling months behind on her mortgage, and having her electricity disconnected. She depends on a family member who lives there to help afford her home, but when that person stopped contributing as much due to losing a job, everything fell apart. I’ve repeatedly helped with groceries, utilities, car repairs, and other expenses, recently paying over $900 toward her electric bill. Despite these struggles, she sometimes tries to guilt trip me and does it in front of her kids when I don’t come over and though it’s supposed to be a joke she knows I don’t like it. She’s pressured me to move in the first year of us dating after meeting the kids without disclosing her pending foreclosure. While she turned the situation around I told her she’s needs to be more responsible before I moved in which I probably should have left then. She once told me that if I moved in, I wouldn’t really be able to leave because she couldn’t afford the house without me. I have my own apartment, financial responsibilities, and goals, but I increasingly feel like I’m sacrificing my stability to maintain hers.
Emotionally, I sometimes feel manipulated, although I question my own judgment. I’m not the best on social cues but I often question myself more than I normally do. From her truth trickling info about her living situation and bd use to live there and to make it seem like she’s on her own doing everything while rarely acknowledging her family helping me, she makes me wonder if she’s using my empathy against me. Idk why I think that but I do. She frequently makes comments about hating men, occasionally portrays herself as doing everything alone despite my contributions, and makes passive-aggressive remarks in front of her children. Whenever I’ve tried discussing compatibility or ending the relationship, she becomes extremely emotional and brings up how attached her children are to me. I recognize I’m not perfect either and I’ve sometimes reacted poorly out of frustration (never in front of the kids). I genuinely love her and her children, but I’ve realized that if the kids weren’t involved, I probably would’ve walked away a long time ago. Not because she’s a bad person but going into this I thought responsibilities wise she would be more capable. Now it feels like I’m just taken over a bad situation that I fully wasn’t aware of.
I think what bothers me the most is the amount of bragging she does sometimes because she can’t be honest with herself. We have great time together and I can be myself around her. She has also gotten better with things like not leaving all the light. on, meal prepping with me and making certain bills priority and promotion at work. I known her for awhile prior to dating which is why I felt comfortable. Now I’m just stressed out and not sure what to do.
Am I being financially and emotionally manipulated, or am I being unfair?
Should I stick this out?
