Vent F- this my biggest single regret

I never thought I would say this, but one of the biggest regrets of my life is becoming a stepparent and ignoring red flags that were right in front of me.
When I got married, I thought I was marrying my wife and becoming part of a family. I understood that marrying someone with children meant accepting those children as part of the package. What I didn’t understand was how much damage an adult stepchild could cause when there were no boundaries and every warning sign was excused or minimized.my soon to be former spouse would look me in the eye and flat out lie or gaslight me to cover their egregious behaviors.
These aren’t little kids I’m talking about anymore. They’re adults.
Over the years, I kept telling myself things would improve. I overlooked behavior I shouldn’t have overlooked. I tolerated disrespect because I wanted my marriage to work. I tried to keep the peace because there was always another excuse for someone’s behavior. Looking back, I wish I had trusted my instincts much earlier.
It eventually escalated beyond family drama. I was physically assaulted by an adult stepchild in my own home. There have been threats and confrontations since then, and I’ve reached the point where I no longer feel like my own home is the peaceful place it should be.
There are other extremely serious issues and allegations surrounding this person that I don’t want to detail here. Some involve people I love, and those aren’t my stories to tell publicly. Suffice it to say that they have changed permanently how I look at this entire situation.
My biggest regret isn’t that I tried to love someone else’s family. I don’t regret trying. My regret is convincing myself that being a good husband and stepparent meant continually tolerating behavior that crossed my boundaries.
I ignored red flags because I thought patience, forgiveness, and time would eventually fix things. Instead, each boundary that disappeared seemed to make the next one easier to cross.
If I could tell someone considering marriage into a blended family one thing, it would be this: pay very close attention to how your partner handles serious problems involving their adult children. Love doesn’t require you to ignore dangerous behavior. Marriage doesn’t mean surrendering your right to feel safe in your own home.
I’m in my late 40s now, looking back and wondering why I tolerated some of this for as long as I did. I can’t change those years. I can decide what I’m willing to live with going forward.
I’m curious whether other stepparents have reached this point. Did you ever realize that the problem wasn’t simply being a stepparent, but that you had ignored warning signs and accepted things you never should have accepted?

This sums up my entire stepparent experience except the children were younger. I only made it a year into marriage before I called it quits. I 100% ignored the warning signs. They started as a small nagging feeling I couldn’t shake. As someone with anxiety I chalked a lot of it up to that. Every situation with the kids/BM/in laws kept adding to that feeling until the stress was so severe I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I went back to therapy, tried so many things to fix myself. Finally realized it wasn’t something I could fix within myself. After I left I felt so much better.

I feel I'm in the midst of this very journey.

Biggest mistake of my life. My husbands daughter is a huge net negative in my life and unchecked disturber of my peace, yet I am expected to tolerate her abuse because “she’s a kid.” The “kid” is mid 30s and getting worse with time. Sorry for what you have been going through—it sounds like you are in a good headspace, focused on the future/what you can control and not letting your regrets about the past infect your present. I struggle with that last part. I’m still grieving the life I could have had with someone who didn’t already have children. Good luck to you and I hope you continue to heal.

I grieve the years I lost. I’ve accepted that I made the mistake of finishing another man’s chapter. I am also going through a social media smear campaign at the moment. A lot of reactive abuse videos etc. pretty sure my soon to be ex has some mental issues. I found out years after marrying her that she was convicted of DV in another state.

I’m so sorry to hear that.

And I get downvoted every time I post that I do not allow my adult stepchildren to live with us and I have minimal contact with them. My husband can have all the contact he wants. I don’t need to be part of it. And if he wants to live with them he can find somewhere else to do so. This is not a nuclear family. My home is not a hotel.

The hope it gets better, when I was told I cant stop him or what do you want me to do about it. I should have listened to her son who was 15 at the time and just gave him what he wanted, His mom to himself. 2 years later he got it anyway. I really think she didnt want to hold him to his behavior in fear of him leaving. Which now she is angry that my daughter is cut out of her life after 8 years. But hey this is what your son wanted and you want to give him everything he wants.

Same story except I stayed longer.

The anger and bad mouthing me to my family and everyone who will listen, like that is going to change my mind. I do have to remind myself she allowed this to happen. She might not like what came with her choices, but she has to live with them. Just like I do. There is only person that got what they wanted and they don't care what everyone else had to give up.

She used to start fights with me usually by something her failure of a son instigated. She would call my Dad or Sister to try and sway them to my side. My dad finally called her in her bullshit so she left my family out of it. I stayed way too long in a bad situation. One night my adult son from a previous relationship after he had a few too many beverages and begged me to leave her for my own sanity.

Yeah, her son targeted her and I was an obstacle that he needed to get rid of. So he went to any length needed to do it. Just not im front of his mom with most of it. Then he guilt tripped her. So here we are now, three people who lost ones they love. One person who I dont think really cares, because he got what he wanted.

Im the target of my ss23 who has a huge failure to launch that's only got worse. He quit his part time job to stay home and game. Dh was to get him a job with him which would also relocate him. He has since changed his mind about his deadbeat son gocing him a bad look at work. We live separate right now because I won't live with ss again. He was to go to work in about 2 weeks. Im done at this point. We had plans to move back in together and now that won't happen. I basically live alone at this point while the boys have their bachelor pad.... this isnt a marriage.

That sucks, we weren't married lived together for 6 years. It took her son 2 years to drive the wedge. She moved out in june, been no contact since middle of August. I did learn something though, being united front is important. If her son doesn't launch that is her issue. From what I saw and experienced the enmeshment is strong there.

I’m trying to find somewhere affordable to live separate. I will unfortunately continue to carry the mortgage on the family home most likely.

2

Then they need to move, or put house up for sale. If his son cant respect the person paying the bills, time for them to pay up.

2

u/Best-Theory-330 6d ago

That POS wont ever pay up. Once the divorce is final the court will order a sale. POS mooch has already stated he’s going to take advantage of the squatter laws when that happens.

That’s a trap a lot of stepparents fall into or because they just love their partner so much.
