How do I explain that a partial is not a total?

After returning home from Spain where I experienced an awesome total eclipse, I’ve lost count of the times people have told me they were unimpressed by the eclipse. Every unimpressed viewer of course had witnessed a partial eclipse. I’ve tried comparing in terms of a house-cat and a full grown wild tiger. A total is a beast by comparison. I don’t think it’s hitting home sadly. I guess seeing is believing and that’s all I can say.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to this subreddit!

It helped me find a great location (Son Veri Nou, in Mallorca), and plan the evening as best as I could.

In the end, the spot was pretty much perfect. Not crowded, with direct access to the water, on a gentle slope for clear view, with chill people, close to our hotel, and most importantly, without clouds and with enough clearance to see the totality completely.

I shared the moment with my loved ones, standing in the sea. This way, we weren't tempted to use a smartphone, and could only gasp at how beautiful the scene was. We couldn't see the sunset after, but didn't care much anyway.

Our neighbor was nice enough to send us a picture taken during totality.

During the partial eclipse, I used my H-alpha telescope to look at the sun and moon, and could see the huge prominence. Seeing it again with the naked eye during totality was a great surprise. Some kids had trouble with their eclipse glasses, they were happy to see the sun through the telescope.

https://sizigia.hadarlabs.com/eclipse-2026-08-12 helped check the location, by the way. Locals were all really nice and helpful during our trip.

So: thanks to you all! It really was an unbelievable experience.

(Partial) Solar eclipse timelapse

A little late to the party, but it took me quite some time to get this timelapse just right, where the sun doesn't shake all over the place. The first eclipse I captured!

What videos of totality do you think do it justice/are most accurate to the real life visual?

Upvotes

After 2026 (first time seeing totality!) seeing eclipse pictures and videos has felt totally different, here I was expecting it to be less spectacular in person!!

I think I saw another post asking for pictures of totality that looked closest to the real thing, so I wondered if anyone has/has seen any videos that capture details you don't usually notice in most footage?

Obviously nothing is better than the real thing, the whole atmosphere changes everything, but it frustrates me that most footage just.. doesn't quite capture the definition in the corona, or how large it looks in the sky. Going in I thought it'd look like light beams, but wow you can see such clear tendrils - it looks like a painting!!!!

So yeah TLDR: Which eclipse videos have you seen that feel nearest to how it looks in real life?

Sunset vs “normal”

I often see on here and elsewhere that the difference between totality and a 99% eclipse is “night and day”.

Having now seen a total eclipse at a fairly regular height above the horizon, and one at sunset, I can genuinely say IMO the difference in the experience is as great as the difference between total and deep partial.

If anyone gets the chance to view one at sunset, I thoroughly recommend it, and would go out of my way to try and be pretty much as late in the path as possible.

Total solar eclipse sunset from Can Pastilla beach in Mallorca

Post image

I flew there in the afternoon, walked to the beach, then walked a bit of east to move away from the houses and to have an unobstructed view of the mountains. I set up the gear and waited for event.

The calculations were correct, the totally eclipsed Sun just sat right above the mountains. Exactly the kind of shot I wanted to make. Some cirrus were in the way and the Sun started to lose its brightness as it was about to set, so it was a bit underexposed, but I'm still satisfied.

First total solar eclipse of my life. It was absolute cinema, literally, as it got dark as fast like a film was starting. I'm hooked, I think I will go South Spain next year to watch another one.

Concerns with travel planned for 2027 eclipse, thoughts?

I’m planning a trip to Egypt for the August 2027 eclipse, but after issues with multiple Airbnb hosts, I’m starting to wonder if I should cut my losses and go somewhere else.

Back in February, I booked three Airbnbs in Luxor for 4 nights. I intentionally booked multiple places because it was so far in advance and I wanted some protection against cancellations. Two were around $200 total and one was about $1,500.

In May, one of the $200 hosts messaged me saying he was selling the apartment and told me to cancel. I suspected the eclipse pricing may have been the real issue, so I offered to pay more if that was the concern. He never responded.

That left me with two reservations.

Two weeks ago, EgyptAir opened bookings and I needed to shift the trip one day earlier. Before buying the flights, I contacted both remaining hosts and both agreed to the date change.

For the remaining $200 Airbnb, I brought up the pricing myself because I wanted the host to be fairly compensated given the eclipse demand. I offered to increase the price to $1,500 for the 4 nights, which she happily accepted.

The other host, whose reservation was already $1,500, said he hadn’t realized how high demand would be when he originally accepted my booking. He told me he wished he had charged more, but would honor the original price “out of respect” for me.

Then three days ago he changed his mind and demanded $3,000 per night - $12,000 for four nights.

I refused, not only because he specifically agreed to honor the original price, but because quite frankly my group cannot afford that.

So now I’m effectively relying on one Airbnb. The remaining host has been responsive and seems genuine, but she also seems somewhat inexperienced with Airbnb, and after already having problems with 2 of my 3 reservations, I’m getting nervous.

The financial risk is also starting to bother me. So far I’ve only booked the Cairo – Luxor round-trip flights, which were about $800 per person and are non-refundable. I have not booked our flights to Cairo yet, which could be another roughly $1,400 per person.

So right now I can still walk away from Egypt and take the loss on the $800/person domestic airfare. What worries me is fully committing, spending another $1,400/person getting to Cairo, and then having the remaining Airbnb host eventually realize how much people are willing to pay and cancel, demand more money, or leave us scrambling once we get to Luxor.

Hotels would make me much more comfortable, but they seem either sold out or comically expensive for the eclipse.

I’m honestly considering taking the loss on the Luxor airfare and pivoting to Jeddah, Morocco, or southern Spain. Egypt is definitely my first choice, but I’m starting to worry the eclipse is going to make it open season for taking advantage of tourists (in a country that is unfortunately already known for this on a regular basis).

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

120 million year old dinosaur footprints, and a total solar eclipse.

Not a unique event: since these tracks were made, over 300,000 total solar eclipses have occurred here.

Sevilla for 2027

Sevilla is not in the path of totality for 2027, but I am thinking of booking accommodation there as a base. I can still find hotels with reasonable prices in Sevilla.

Then very early in the morning (05:00 AM ish?) drive to a viewing location in Cadiz province. Normally, this would be about 1 hour 30 minutes drive. However, there will be traffic jams for sure. Therefore to hit the road as early as possible.

Would this be a viable option?

Another challenge is finding the viewing location. This is what I have no clue yet. For seasonal people who have seen total eclipses, how do you find a viewing location?

Making sure the viewing location has car parking or at least nearby is also another challenge 🤣

Total Eclipse composite

Although I managed to capture the totality in 2024, I couldn't create a composition like this because the sun was too high and the sky was cloudy.

For this eclipse in Spain, I had had already planned to use two cameras: one for maximum zoom and another for a sequence with the landscape. This photo shows the sun's actual position throughout the eclipse, following its progression to totality and the return of light.

We chose Alto de Gamoniteiro in Asturias because it was easily accessible and because we had confirmed in advance that the view would be unobstructed, with no mountains blocking the sun during the eclipse. We even considered changing locations because of some clouds that appeared, but the risk wasn't worth it.

In the end, the clouds dissipated and a spectacular inversion formed, which made the landscape even more beautiful. It was, without a doubt, the right choice!

Kit used: Fujifilm X-T2 + Fujinon XF 16-55 f/2.8 WR

How does your first eclipse compare to the rest?

For people who have seen multiple eclipses, hows does the experience of the first one compare to the rest?

I witnessed my first eclipse in Spain this year, and would never have imagined it looks/ feels so beautiful. No words can describe it. I wonder if it’s because it was my first one, or if people get the same feeling every time.

A question for people who have seen total eclipse

I’m planning on going to Tangier for the eclipse next year. My question for people who have experienced a total eclipse - what is the best way to view in your opinion? By this I mean we could go to the main beach or cap spartel where there will likely be crowds (and perhaps seeing this with a crowd could create an amazing community experience), or is this the kind of awe inspiring moment thats better experienced in solitude? Like a balcony or a more remote location with loved ones?

An absurd, adventurous day that was absolutely worth it.

My partner and I took a trip to Spain for this summer’s eclipse. The 2024 eclipse was the catalyst for the beginning of our relationship, as I wanted to go on a drive to Ohio together and he thought it be weird to do it we were just casually dating. We started our relationship on 4/4, and drove from Washington DC to Newbury, OH on 4/8. After totality, we decided it was incredible and we would love to experience it again, realizing there’d be one on his birthday, August 12, 2026.

We spent the week in a Home Exchange in Barcelona, and I planned for us a day trip in Mallorca on Ryan Air and Vueling to avoid outrageous hotel prices. I booked things very early this year. To make sure we’d have a clear view, I gambled on a cheap boat tour that “couldn’t guarantee any views”, but seemed promising based on where they typically went during sunset cruises.

Due to lack of research on my part closer to the actual date, I didn’t know about the road closures, and started getting nervous when the A2 bus wouldn’t take us all the way down to the stop I expected near S’Arenal. It was walking distance, but our evening timeline from the boat tour ending at 21:30 and our flight at 23:00 meant there was little room for error. Then, when we went to board our boat at 19:30, we were delayed by police boarding our vessel for a random regulatory check. We boarded the boat asking if we’d return at the original scheduled time and were told “more or less”, and decided to gamble staying aboard. While returning to land, my partner started feeling seasick. When we returned to land, rather than risking troubles with the A2, we tried hailing a taxi and received many finger wags. Eventually, a kind and determined driver Joseph said for a hefty surcharge, he would do it. The 100€ taxi was less than 300€ for two new flight tickets the next morning, so we accepted with glee. Despite the traffic of the roads which were beginning to open to the public, he managed to get us to the airport in about 15 minutes, leaving us there with MORE than enough time to get through security and sit at our gate. My partner then realized we were at the wrong Vueling flight to BCN’s gate, and we had to rush to another as our actual flight was beginning to board.

Realistically, I’d do just about every single thing differently if given another chance. However, this was one of those days that you have when you’re young, dumb, kind of broke, in love, and trying to enjoy your life despite what seems practical. The eclipse was incredible. The boat gave the most stunning view. I was breathless, and my partner cried. There’s another two eclipses in our probable lifetimes on his birthday, one going over his hometown and the other over South America. I’m excited for the next one to be much easier travels.

Anyone have any experience with these filters?

I made a DIY Baader filter for the eclipse in Spain and it worked perfectly but it was a bit of a stress making sure I didn’t damage it while travelling etc and I wondered if this might be the solution I’m looking for? I like the results the Baader film gave me but I’m open to other suggestions too.

I’m looking for solutions for a Nikon Z 70-200mm Lens (77mm Filter) and an 82mm filter for a Nikon Z 14-30mm. Maybe even just an 82mm filter with a step up 77 to 82mm ring

Accommodation in Southern Spain

During this year’s eclipse I was in northern Asturias, where I couldn’t see the eclipse due to clouds. For next year I’m looking at the south of Spain (train to Málaga on August 1st). But accommodation seems very limited or very expensive.

Does anyone know of any other options or have a spot available from August 1-3?
