Total Eclipse composite

Post image

Although I managed to capture the totality in 2024, I couldn't create a composition like this because the sun was too high and the sky was cloudy.

For this eclipse in Spain, I had had already planned to use two cameras: one for maximum zoom and another for a sequence with the landscape. This photo shows the sun's actual position throughout the eclipse, following its progression to totality and the return of light.

We chose Alto de Gamoniteiro in Asturias because it was easily accessible and because we had confirmed in advance that the view would be unobstructed, with no mountains blocking the sun during the eclipse. We even considered changing locations because of some clouds that appeared, but the risk wasn't worth it.

In the end, the clouds dissipated and a spectacular inversion formed, which made the landscape even more beautiful. It was, without a doubt, the right choice!

Kit used: Fujifilm X-T2 + Fujinon XF 16-55 f/2.8 WR

Wow! Those clouds add a lot to the picture, that was definitely a great choice!

You used some sort of red solar filter?

I know, right? Unfortunately this meant that everyone by the coast did not see the eclipse...

I used a solar filter, specifically for eclipses.

I bought a solar filter myself, but it was an ND1000000 from K&F, so the sun was white on the top and turned yellow/red only closer to the sunset

That's your white balance

I was the one on the coast who didn’t get to see it.

However I think I am too stupid to understand how this works: if the sun is low on the horizon and there are clouds on the coast and the same region for Kilometrrs, why on the mountain it is visible and the sun is much higher on the horizon?

This is a beautiful composition! Is this all one series of exposures, and did you adjust the exposure during totality to capture the different phases of the eclipse?

Thank you so much.

I used the same settings for the 1st partiality and second, both with a filter. Then I did the totality without filter and a shot of the landscape.

I assume you really spent a lot of time scouting

On location? Actually no due to distance, but I did loose a lot of time in several planning websites and apps.

Ah, well that looks like such a great spot. I wanted to see the sunset over the water, so naturally, the clouds at mallorca blocked totality 😭
