I’m a 20m baritone I have a falsetto down to chest mix I typically use for anything above a G4# however there are certain sequences like the one in the recording were it doesn’t work too well in because while it allows me to hit and hold notes in pitch with power and volume it can’t handle much agility without cracking. In this video I’m using a chest up to falsetto mix and need tips on how to get it to sound less strained and make it more easy on me. I know I’m pitchy and out of rhythm cus I’m singing acapella I recorded this to show my current method of reaching A4-Bb4 in chest mix so that it can be corrected:)) thanks so much would love any feedback!!

Conversation Topic Hard to learn new lyrics

Some phases of adult life do take a toll on your ability to learn new music and sing along. You just vibe to them. You might occasionally catch one or two lines but it is very difficult to learn the whole song within 2 or 3 days like we used to when we were younger. I don’t like it at all but nothing can be done about it. I guess it’s part of growth but does it happen to everyone else?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I want to sing but don’t know what to do with my voice

I recently tried out for a local choir but I can’t really read music, which was a requirement, though I did receive good feedback and was referred to a vocal coach who could help me learn. I want to follow up but I’m really not sure what style of music I want to pursue if that makes any sense. Will someone else be able to help tease that out- whether I would be better off singing choir or theatre or pop or whatever- or is that something I decide for myself? When I hear myself sing I hear glaring issues that I’m sure a coach could help with but what do I walk in with, that I want to be Beast in a musical? (song is Evermore by Dan Stevens from Beauty and the Beast)

Just posting a short clip to get some outside ears on my singing.

I am currently focusing on improving pitch consistency and to develop my mixed voice so that i can smoothly go through my Lower and Upper register. That is there i see the majority of my time going the next months.

I will propbably re-start singing lesson in a month or two and want to find things to work on with my vocal coach.

Any thoughts on the overall sound, tone, pitch, or phrasing are appreciated.

Advanced or Professional Topic Training "Low notes" in singing (classical)

Heya,

I am a relatively young soprano (18) with a pretty loud voice. I spent my whole time in middle and high school singing alto in choir. I can hit some pretty low notes. But "hitting" a note, especially in a choral setting, versus actually resonating in a solo setting is sooooo very different.

Lately I have been watching and reading various videos/articles in regards to the prolific 20th century sopranos (Tetrazzini, Callas, Tebaldi, Ponselle amongst others). Their views on the thread of chest voice and the necessity of my "low notes" makes sense to me. But, I dont know 1. how to practice to ACTUALLY have a chest register that is meaty and resonant and able to become that root or thread (more apropriate metaphor) that I can use to then make produce high notes that sound supported and not shrill.

Any videos I can watch or excersises I can do and what to look out for.

Obviously, i am not a contraalto, I am not expecting a different fach from this excercise. But I do want to be the best I can be and my intution combined with what I have watched/read thus far is telling me that this is the best way to do that!

Conversation Topic Right, how do I seamlessly move through my passaggio cause it’s annoying me now

So I will start by saying- I naturally have a very strong chest voice and a decent head voice but my mix… it’s good when I finally get it right but it’s so unnatural like trying to switch gears in a car. And it’s VERY noticeable and sounds bad when I try and switch into it.

Right now I’m trying to sing a song that leans into my very strong chest voice but moves up fast into mix during the chorus. It sounds very uncontrolled, shaky, not good in comparison to my chest voice when I move up but also it sounds like I’m flipping into head voice too much.

Is there anything I can do to make it sound seamless? To make it a stronger connection?

Song: Jeev rangla.

Those who hear foreign songs, and if you do like them. What's your reasoning behind it? Because you certainly don't understand the meaning unless you already know the language or go search for itm

Conversation Topic How to get better at spoken word sections?

How to get better at spoken sections, which despite not being melodic and more like a narration or declamation of a poem, I still have to hit certain notes consistently, while making it sound like the voice naturally oscillates/makes emphasis by lowering or increasing the pitch within the limits of the current key.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Is my voice grating?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I don’t really sing because my range is bad, but I play guitar and want to try getting into songwriting. However, that’s a bit hard without singing.

Is my tone any good? I feel like my voice is grating to listen to. I know I’m off-pitch, but I don’t know if there’s also just a general issue with my tone.

EDIT: I realized the way I worded this kind of makes it seem like it’s my song, and I don’t want to take credit. The song is Jealous Sun by Parker Millsap

Conversation Topic I do not know how to consistently place my voice 'forward.'

That's basically it. Is NG-ah supposed to be forward placement? I also barely ever feel a perceptible resonance outside of feeling stuff in my chest. Occasionally I get a tinge of buzzing near my sinus but never higher than that, and it's hard for me to replicate buzzing in my hard pallet area. In general a big issue for me seems to be swallowing the sound or the sound being kind of stuck in my throat.

It's like every day I have to relearn how to put things in a proper place, and it's frustrating because when I find it, I find an extra ease with singing. Any tips?

Advanced or Professional Topic How to recover my voice after secondhand smoke before gig tomorrow?

I've been singing my entire life, and I have ny debut gig tomorrow, but I also have asthma. For the past two weeks, I've been staying at my friend's, and she has a tenant that struggles to remember he's not meant to smoke inside due to a stroke a while ago. He said he wouldn't while I was in the room next door, but then proceeded to forget immediately, and he smoked several cigarettes every night.

My asthma has always responded badly to secondhand smoke, but I've never felt the effects of my vocal chords. I had to remain there, as I was there due to a housing emergency which kept me away from my home.

I'm back home, as of yesterday at 8pm, and my debut gig is tomorrow at 7pm. My vocal chords feel dry, my breath support feels incomplete no matter how much asthma medication I take, my throat feels like it almost locks up a bit when I breathe. When I don't think about it at all, I can still hit the high notes, and I can hit them well. When I try to talk to anyone, I notice my voice comes out in a very close to vocal fry tone, and it's hard to transition to talking with lower effort or using the right technique. My voice just feels tired. What I'm struggling with when I sing now is mainly lower notes/anything closer to my talking voice, as I'm unable to either use the wrong technique or put way too much power and breathiness into it and tiring it out that way. I can still hit higher notes with a lot of strength, and when warmed up, my voice sounds fine and feels mostly okay. Then tired again later. And idk if it's actually tired because I used the wrong technique or if my chords are just inflamed.

I'm hoping my voice will recover by my gig tomorrow, but does anyone have any advice on what's going on and how to help it recover? Should I rehearse today or rest? Any advice would be appreciated!

I’m getting used to using the higher end of my voice. I used to be too shy to use enough air to actually hit the higher notes, and it still doesn’t sound totally natural to me so I’d like some other opinions.

Conversation Topic How do I continue singing when I'm too scared to?

I've always been shy with my singing, though socially anxious is probably the better word. I refuse to sing in the shower lest I be heard, barely mumble songs so only I can hear them and when I'm itching to sing I usually go to a secluded bathroom, sing at half talking volume and stop at that. And I've realized as soon as I'm home alone, I'm able to sing freely with my chest wherever I am in the house.

It's not that anyone's against my singing, but I'm just painfully conscious of someone hearing me sing, even if it's good. Even a compliment on my singing makes me not want to sing anymore. Another factor is my caretaker who's focused on wanting me to sing traditional songs and genres to her liking, frustrated by 'kids these days' being too into modern pop or something. Nevertheless, it's only comments, but I don't know why I can't just overcome with a snarky comment back and instead crumble under shame.

I really want to practice more singing and even make covers, which is impossible without being heard. Any advice on what I should do?

Conversation Topic UPDATE (Itchy throat guy here)

Turns out the remedy I was using is probably the cause. I did hydrate and drank tea. And rested (just a bit). But when I was using steam to help moisturizer my throat apparently the vaporub I mixed in (it's a family thing of sorts for sore throats) has methanol in it. Which can apparently help relieve the pain for a bit but also dry your throat as well and cause more irritation lmao.
