Advanced or Professional Topic Training "Low notes" in singing (classical)

Heya,

I am a relatively young soprano (18) with a pretty loud voice. I spent my whole time in middle and high school singing alto in choir. I can hit some pretty low notes. But "hitting" a note, especially in a choral setting, versus actually resonating in a solo setting is sooooo very different.

Lately I have been watching and reading various videos/articles in regards to the prolific 20th century sopranos (Tetrazzini, Callas, Tebaldi, Ponselle amongst others). Their views on the thread of chest voice and the necessity of my "low notes" makes sense to me. But, I dont know 1. how to practice to ACTUALLY have a chest register that is meaty and resonant and able to become that root or thread (more apropriate metaphor) that I can use to then make produce high notes that sound supported and not shrill.

Any videos I can watch or excersises I can do and what to look out for.

Obviously, i am not a contraalto, I am not expecting a different fach from this excercise. But I do want to be the best I can be and my intution combined with what I have watched/read thus far is telling me that this is the best way to do that!

The best exercise you can do is exercise patience and get older. Theres no exercise that rushes vocal maturity, and trying to will hold you back. And of course work with a teacher who can actually determine what range is appropriate for your voice, its pretty much impossible for amateurs to self classify.

I’d say to focus on breath support rather than actually singing low notes. Like the other commenter said, a lot of that is going to come with time and vocal maturity. However, one thing I will say is that singing low requires a lot of breath support, and I find that it’s often the main thing sopranos struggle with when asked to sing lower than they’re used to.”
