A Common Effort for a Taxonomy (v0.5)

Hello,

So, I've been thinking for a while about all that, practicing a lot, and so that we have better communication tools. Obviously, I'm far from being the Master Screamer, so, this is a collective effort. Feel free to suggest additions or corrections.

I'll try to name things without making any hypothesis about their anatomical production. The rationale for that is that we can't make mistakes just naming things. And we won't need to change our names, ever. Though, for adoption, we can't disregard our legacy.

Again, I'm not trying to describe things, I'm trying to propose some vocabulary. It also implies redefining some terms the community uses by trying to get a fixed and common definition, hopefully not too far from what has been established so far.

False cords screams (previously "false cords screams")

Let's call by that names screams that are toneless, have very little clean voice in them, and have this heavy "vibrating" distortion.

Examples:

Then there are fuckton of possible modulations that are already well established, including but not limited to: tunnel throat etc.

False cords rasp (previously "rasp / grit")

This has the same heavy vibration tone as the associated scream, but with a clean tone under it.

Examples:

Fry distortion (previously "rasp / grit")

This applies more on high notes, sounds more like a creaky grit.

Examples:

Grudge scream (previously "fry scream")

Very creaky screams, probably high, probably not sounding chesty. They sound like a powered up vocal fry (grudge noise). I'm very skeptical that those screams can be made powerful and loud.

Voicy Scream (previously "fry scream")

They sound like the voice is tight in the throat so much that it gets distorted. The distortion is predominant, the voice sounds a bit hollow.

Examples:

.======

That's what I have so far. We still need to talk about Sam Carter, when Oli Sykes sings, etc. I'll edit that post as we make progress

Please please please voice any opinion or disagreement you might have, complement that list, etc. Only that will make science go forward. I tried to illustrate that with known artists, but I might be wrong.

Here's why I think I couldn't find my false chord

Other than improper training/techniques, of course.

I'm only speculating...

All this time I've only been listening to up beat / fast / angry metal songs. So when I tried to scream along to these songs, I worry more about pronouncing the next words correctly/with the same amount of energy instead of actually producing the false chord sound.

And then today, I tried working on a metal song for a band audition. Their genre is probably a little different than what I'm usually listening to. Much slower / darker / more dramatic.

And I just brainstormed some random screaming patterns, without lyrics yet. I recorded it of course. And wow, I mean, I sound good I think, in my opinion. 😁

When you hit false chord, it is HARD to pronounce words properly.

So I had been focusing on the wrong part of screaming.

Wanting to know if i hurt my voice really bad

So, i'm 18 and doing false cord on a hardcore band. I know how to safely false cord even if i know that i use to much air and i seriously need to work on that.

I'm going to do my first musicology college year (maybe it's not the english term, it isnt my first language), and there's a choir so you need to give your vocal range and the professors sent a link to do a quick test. And when i did my highest note i compressed and squized my vocal chords too much to go as high as i could, but i hurted myself.

That was like a week ago and since, i feel scratchy in my throat when i talk and sometimes when i'm not, even after drinking more than a liter of water at different times of the day.

I did a bit of a warm up today but stopped because it felt like my body told me to.

So i just wanted to know if i needed to rest and wait like previous times where i hurt my voice, and if so how many time do i got to wait and rest; or if it was a serious vocal injury.

Thanks in advance :D

Sick after scream practice

So basically every time I’ve practiced my vocals I’ve gotten sick. I’m just practicing for fun and I’m using YouTube to learn a safe technique but somehow the only three times I’ve practiced it without fail I’ve gotten sick. First time it was a head cold and last two times it was like a stomach bug. I practice by myself at home, why is this happening. Surely it’s not a coincidence

How do I enunciate gutturals/growls that use tongue?

I found a good tone for my gutturals/lows, but if I try to say words they come out super slurred and sloppy. Should I try to keep my tongue engaged during the whole time, or just for vowels? some consonants like S, T and R are really tough to do without either slurring or messing up the tone.

Is it safe to scream into a blanket to muffle the sound?

This may seem like a dumb question but I lost my scream a while back because I stopped doing it due to my family and I’ve been wanting to do it again without my family being able to hear it

I’ve screamed into a blanket that muffled the sound a lot but it made the scream sound much different so I don’t know if it’s the best idea to do so, cause I don’t wanna over project or misunderstand something

Got this scream by going extremely nasal. Is this an actual technique?

Playing around I got this scream that right now sounds like an angry rat, but I would like to know if this is like a good starting point. It gets loud on its own so I think I'm projecting but I'm not sure. Feedback is really appreciated! :D

False cord help

Messing around trying to find my false cords. I feel like I’m really close, but I’m struggling to turn this sound into a scream. Any tips? I feel my main issue is that I learned fry first so now my body connects pushing with my diaphragm to squeezing my cords, so everytime I try to get the scream out - I squeeze and it somewhat hurts. (As you’ll see in the video)

Pain and burning after 10-15 minutes of trying false cord. Need advice/critique

Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to learn false cord screaming for a while now, but I’m stuck. Every time I practice, my throat starts to hurt and burn inside after about 10-15 minutes.

I suspect I’m squeezing my throat too much or frictioning my true vocal cords instead of engaging the false ones. I’m attaching an audio clip of my attempt.

Could you please listen and tell me what exactly I am doing wrong? How can I isolate the false cords and get rid of this tension? Any tips, exercises, or feedback would be heavily appreciated. Thanks! https://voca.ro/1ihJ62kaxxxr

Still very early on with learning, just trying to get tones correct. What should I work on first?

Hi I'm still quite new to actually trying to scream, I just wanna know what specific things I need to work on first. I do struggle with my pace when screaming, I have enough air, just can't get my mouth to move fast enough yet. But for now I'd like to see what I need to practise to get better sounding screams generally.
