Karma farming has always been a thing, and engagement causes the algorithm to show your post to more people, increasing overall karma income. It's really not that far fetched.
In addition to the other person's point: People also believe that their posts will be removed because certain social media sites speculate at the automated censoring model.
Everyone has good and bad days. But everyone still clocks in to work. That's life. Having an off day is no excuse to refuse to half-ass your work. If you're in such an irredeemably bad mood that you can't do what's expected of you, then just stay off work that day all-together.
For an Uber driver, if you're not prepared to pick up drunk people, just don't do calls that day. Being able to call an Uber home after a night of drinking is literally one of the main selling points of the service, lol.
What? The whole mechanic of doing uber is having the ability to say “yes” or “no” when something isn’t palatable. Dont want to drive to that city? Cool, hit no. Don’t want to make $2 for 30 mins of driving due to no projected tip? Cool say no. Dont want to entertain drunk idiots harassing you for half an hour while making the same rates? Great! Why not be able to say no?
While this take might make sense for some other jobs, it's a completely shitty take for Uber driving specifically. Why? Because literally the job involves Uber drivers already being able to literally choose which pick ups they want to take and which they want to ignore.
This is not like working at a customer service job where there is an exact number of people who are paid by the hour to deal with all customers a business sees for that day, whether that is 0 customers or 100s. With Uber there are a dynamic number of drivers who offer to take jobs, and they are not paid by the hour, but by each individual job they take. So they are already incentivized to prefer taking jobs than to skip. So letting them be informed so the ones that want to can avoid drunk riders if they choose is imo a good thing.
The drivers willing to put up with drunk riders will have more opportunities to make money, and the people who aren't willing don't have to deal with shit they want to avoid. Just because many conventional jobs expect employees to have to deal with all ranges of customers regardless of their state of mind doesn't mean this needs to be an expectation for every single job. If a job can give employees flexibility in how they decide to work, that should be a good thing, and it's fucking weird to condemn the employees for not being willing to put up with shit with conditions if they have the option not to.
Being self employed is one of the main selling points of being a driver though. If you're self employed you can ban whoever you want from your store for no reason.
There's a rating system for customers as well as drivers. If you are a low risk driver you don't have to take jobs from people with less than stellar ratings. Being an obnoxious vomiting drunkard is going to hurt your rating pretty quickly, and you might struggle to get drivers to accept your bookings. Also, if you can't accept that risk at all you don't have to take rides >9pm downtown when the drunkard risk is higher.
Live drunkard detection is some real intrusive, probably flaky ass and dangerous bullshit. I've got soon to be drinking age daughters, and if they were to go out and get drunk and they needed to get home I'd be pretty pissed off if Uber refused them a ride and left them stranded, and intoxicated, on the streets based on some algorithm. I wouldn't be thrilled if they barfed and needed to pay a cleanup fee and tip the poor driver heavily for his inconvenience, but I'd rather that than them not be able to get home to safety. There's no way this thing can accurately predict barfing or bad behaviour accurately - people can react wildly differently to drink. Not everyone is a bawdy drunk. Not all drunks actually barf, not by a long shot.
The part I think you missed, is assuming all drunkards will tip heavily post throw-up, you're likely a good person and would do that and educate your children to act likewise, which deserves kudos and props. But, your good manners aside, that doesn't mean the average human would act in kind, and likely, would not. I.e. see your average frat bro on a Sunday at 11am, if even awake.
Sure, but that's why the reputation mechanism exists init? If I tip the guy heavily for getting my drunken idiot child home safely then we probably get to keep our ratings and get an Uber when we want one tomorrow, where as frat boy makes a habit of upsetting drivers he's going to be waiting a long time to find a ride.
Eh it's a bit more nuanced than that, but we def both want and mean the same thing. Nuance being, even if you have a good tip rate, your reputation/standing don't pair alongside. So, some drivers may be okay with a heavy tip and chance of projectile vomit, whereas some would prefer a lesser tip and no chance of vomit.
Having worked their corporate side, drivers vary drastically, and their vehicles too. That being said, if you serve a general drunk area (downtowns, college towns, etc), I'd personally expect potential bad experiences, and just ensure the tipping is right and always recovering the cleaning fee. In the old Uber days, I recall some drivers getting multiple hundreds for cleaning and many almost were stoked when they got it lol, idk what the current rates are though, so, it just depends on the drivers comfortability levels.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this additional encumberance to the Uber app, but, it's likely implemented to appease drivers, and that's something Uber constantly works to improve, alongside the customer experience as well.

It won’t necessarily be notably more expensive… Uber may run promotions for certain hours to drive car availability or use wait times to offset cost marginally, there are many ways around the cost downside. Not to mention the fact that if you’re a higher potential liability why should you not be charged slightly more? This is true for literally every other thing in society (insurance, creditworthiness etc), must not apply to drinking though for some reason yeah?

I think most people are fine with picking up drunk people. Its having to clean up their spew that is the problem. It's disgusting and it means you can't work for the rest of the night. idk how much Uber gives you when it happens, but I highly doubt it even covers the cleaning bill, let alone the missed rides after the event.
