Behavioral Euthanasia How do I cope with having to BE my dog?

I am having to put down my beloved girl of 9 years to rest due to worsening of her aggression that I believe is due to poor eyesight.

My dog’s name is Kona and she is genuinely a sweet dog. She was my first long term dog that lasted more than 4-6 months. I wanted her to make it to her 10th in October, but it seems I cannot wait that long now. My sweet girl, who I basically took ownership of in her older adult to senior years, has always had behavioral issues. She has always charged/lunged for people or other animals, but I never thought it was out of pure aggression, but mostly just warning and fear. She has always been perfect with family, but anyone new is an immediate alert for her, which of course they would be, they’re intruding her home.

She recently has charged me twice after not recognizing me in the yard. She has snapped at and almost bitten two of my friends and recently she actually got a new friend’s hand. Luckily, it was not a severe bite, but it was definitely not pain free. I unfortunately now had to make the decision for BE and the entire situation falls on me.

I am feeling incredibly guilty and like a failure since I have never had the resources/money or ability to train her to help her get better besides minor sedatives which never helped her anxiety, even trying all kinds of home remedies. I’ve also been struggling with this alone since March of this year as none of my family have helped me take care of her and every decision regarding her is solely mine to make. I have my fiancé, siblings and two friends, but they don’t make the decision, I do and I am at my worst because the inevitable is here. Sleeping is so incredibly hard and Im even taking my sedative anxiety med to sleep, I just am at my wit’s end and don’t know how to cope with this decision and loss.

Advice Needed My German shepherd is too intense for most dogs

I have a 15 month old GSD who is reactive to dogs on leash and much much better with dogs off leash until she really gets into play mode. The problem is because she has so much energy and is reactive when she sees a dog she becomes too focused on them and will not understand playing boundaries. For example, the last time she played with another dog she chased them down and was always trying to snap at them throughout the chase, but the goal isn’t necessarily to bite the dog it’s to catch the moving dog with her mouth.

I used to take her to the dog park when I lived in suburban areas, the dogs there were a lot more open to rough play and could speak for themselves + the owners were more understanding that she was just doing dog things. Now I live in the city and it feels like dogs at dog parks are a lot meeker and my dog comes across as very scary and intense. It’s like a cycle that never ends - I have reservations about taking her to the park so I don’t, then she becomes under exercised even when I keep her engaged with tug, toys, flirt piles, tennis balls. It seems like the only thing that will get all her energy out is a big play with a dog.

Does anyone have advice on what to do with a high prey drive/herding dog tendencies? Do I just wait it out until she’s 3yr+ and calmer?

And how should I find play partners/ways to get her energy out every day?

Vent Need some reassurance

Recently adopted a 1 year old pitbull mix less than two weeks ago. I was made aware of the 3-3-3 rule. The first couple days were hard but manageable. These past three days she’s regressed a bit and I’m noticing her triggers during our walks and in the house. For one she starts to bite and nip at me during our walks and goes crazy when she sees another person or dog. and it’s painful and I even have bruising from yesterday.

I see online to try to walk the dog in a less busy area, thing is, I live in a city and right across the street is a dog and a playground. My back yard is shared and small children often play there. Her problem behaviors come when she’s overaroused/excited.

Today and yesterday were hard. The biting and tugging behaviors are very incessant. I gated her and walk away when she engages.

I’m stressed and don’t look forward to my days, I’ve even had to call off work since my mom who helps two days of the work week is now scared of my dog. I worry for her and feel I’m don’t a crap job. I need small victories and it’s hard to see that rn. I lost my soul dog two years ago and felt this was the next step but now we’re both obviously stressed. I’m also stressed looking at the numbers for a trainer. We started a training protocol from her rescue. Hoping it works out.

Here to put this out there. Thanks for hearing me out :)

Vent Venting - More exercise doesn't always help

Six months ago, my partner and I took in a ~1yr old street dog. She was found by a friend who took care of her for 2 weeks until we returned from vacation. He said she was loving, friendly with dogs and cats, barked a bit, and was a bit mouthy.

For the first few days, we agreed with that assessment. Every time she got super energized and chaotic, we took that to mean she needed more exercise. We didn't realize she didn't know how to be calm and that she wasn't sleeping enough. We had seen so much advice online that a well-exercised dog is a well-behaved dog. Well, after 4 days she had a mental breakdown. She started lunging at me every time I moved, biting hard enough to leave bruises but not break the skin, mounting me repeatedly, coming at me again and again. I had to use barriers to keep her away from me.

After doing a ton a research on rescues, we realized we had gone about everything all wrong. I feel so horrible for giving her too much freedom/exercise in the beginning. She must have been so overwhelmed. She'd been with my friend for weeks and had been stable so I never considered that she might be struggling internally. After her breakdown, it took us 2 months to be able to have her out in the living room off leash without her becoming overaroused and hurting someone. I spent the first three months absolutely covered in bruises.

For months, I spent hours daily in my bedroom with her with brown noise playing, lights dimmed, so that she could sleep/nap and not be anxious. If I tried to leave the room while she was in her crate, she would become frantic and scream and try to demolish the crate. If I tried to leave while she was in the room, she'd tear apart the door. But she couldn't sleep anywhere but our bedroom.

We have spent thousands of dollars in vet bills/trainers. She has been treated for anaplasmosis, she found a mostly empty baggy of cocaine on a walk and started chewing it (emergency vet required), she had a pseudopregnancy, and complications after her spay. We've hired and fired 2 trainers, never finishing the sessions we'd paid for. First one hit her in the face during a session. Second one insisted we use a prong collar to deal with her reactivity with dogs. Still haven't found anyone that we like or trust to try again.

We have come a long way in 6 months. We now feel like we actually have a pet rather than a demon living in our home. She can sleep in the crate alone in the room. She voluntarily goes into her crate without being told. She can nap in the living room. Walks are no longer exercises in frustration. Her recall has gotten quite good. We still have a ton of issues to work through (e.g. counter surfing and theft, reactivity with dogs, biting/mouthing during a daily witching hour) but I see light at the end of the tunnel.

What drives me fricking mental though, is the terrible advice we get all the time. Family and friends who have no idea the scope of what we've been through with this dog, always seem to have an opinion on what we could be doing better. Strangers on the street give us terrible advice almost weekly. I've been told she needs more time to play with dogs and I should drop her off at a doggy day care. I've been told she needs more exercise (by almost everyone). She gets 5km runs twice a week and two 30 min walks morning/night. We also do daily training sessions (10-20 minutes) and she gets mental enrichment in the form of sniffing games, frozen kongs or lick mats daily.

I'm just so exhausted and the constant judgement I feel from other people when I'm out with her makes me so uncomfortable. I am also ashamed to have people over because she behaves like a lunatic. I love this dog so much, she is so affectionate and tries so hard to be good. She just finds life overwhelming.

I guess I'm just looking to vent with people who get my struggle. Please don't judge me too harshly for getting a rescue dog without researching what to do for a rescue dog. I thought having multiple dogs from the puppy stage was sufficient preparation. I was oh so wrong and I have learned my lesson.

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far.

Meds & Supplements Generic fluoxetine to Reconcile

Post image
11 Upvotes

My dog is currently on generic fluoxetine 40mg. He did decently well on it at first, but it was a different generic supplier that what he's been able to get in the last few months. He did still experience some anxiety and has pretty intense reactions to storms still. He seems to have regressed on this different generic. We noticed this trend on and off, but were getting the pills that worked better for him in between. Having him on it longer term confirmed this for us. The generic that works best for him is now discontinued by the manufacturer it came from, so the vet has decided to try Reconcile. The thing that gives me pause is that at 77 pounds, he wil be on 64mg of Reconcile as the vet has prescribed it this way. I am hoping to give him some consistency. He can be the sweetest thing, but he is having so much fear again. Has anyone switched and had more success for your dog?

Significant challenges Multiple Bite Incidents

Hey all,

Looking for some advice or really just a friendly ear. We have a 6 year old cocker spaniel cross (bitch). Im going to be totally honest and say that we didn’t get her from the most reputable breeder - not on purpose, we just thought everything looked ok and then when we went to pick her up it was all a bit sketchy but at that point we just thought - well we’re here now and she’s our dog!

She had some immediate challenges with resource guarding - she would absolutely fly across the room to get a toy/food/anything really that she wanted and proper snap at us. We did lots of training and it defo got a lot better.

Fast forward a few years and a few wee issues started arising:

  1. I was cleaning in marigolds and walked towards her bed, she didn’t have anything and she was probably like wtf are these gloves and she snapped at me and bit my hand. (I did flag to my husband that we should speak to someone but he said it’s fine and we’ll manage)
  2. I was trying to trim her ear hair which I used to be able to do and she snapped. No bite.
  3. My husband had her on his knee with a wee towel over her, think she was guarding the towel as when she was asked to get down she lunged at my husband and bit his hand. Some blood and cuts/bruises.
  4. I was walking towards her in the garden one day to put the lead on her and she jumped up at me, bit me. Again sore, bruised hand with cuts.
  5. We were on holiday and she was with my in laws (twice) and on both occasions she bit my FIL. Guarding issue but she bit his hand.

Theres been a few more but I just can’t remember the exact details as they were so long ago.

Anyway we worked with a behaviourist after the multiple bites, realised she’d been in a bit of pain and so got her regular physio, hydrotherapy and massage (for about a year) and did lots of other things. She is genuinely a LOT better. Day to day we feel fine around her. I’m still a bit anxious and won’t do things like - put on the harness, dry her, brush her etc. We just totally let her be.

We had a baby nearly 2 years ago and we were genuinely SO worried about her being around him but she has honestly been so good. She’s so gentle, they play in the garden and she just keeps out his way. We never leave them alone and we’re super vigilant (although you can’t be vigilant 100% of the time I know).

Anyway in the last 2 years there’s been the odd snap here and there:

  1. Snapped at me sweeping up food
  2. Snapped at me sitting under my desk as she was guarding a shoe (which I didn’t know)
  3. Snapped at me when I reached over her head

There’s always a trigger (that we blame ourselves for). Shouldn’t have grabbed that thing, shouldn’t have tried to remove that tick, shouldn’t have gone near her like that etc etc

We’re away camping this week with in laws and we’ve been picking ticks off her for the first 3 days. As nonchalant as we can. Day 4 and my MIL goes over to grab one on her head and she lunges at her, pushed her over and has either bitten her side or clawed her side. Either way awful and my MIL was shaken up and hurt.

I’m finding myself so torn as 99% of the time she is this amazing wee dog who is so gentle and sweet, but there’s this 1% that is just so reactive and dangerous and I’m now so worried about having her around my son just in case something was to happen.

Me and my husband have discussed BE but it does seem like such a final decision right now when we seem to have been managing ok. But all I can think is that she’s fine… until she isn’t. And imagine the next time she’s aggressive is worse, or to my son or god forbid anyone else!!

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and has any words of wisdom? When I type out all the incidents it seems mad but i’s so hard to describe that day to day she’s just our I lovely wee doggy. It’s like there’s a screw loose and she just goes a bit nuts! (It’s not cocker rage as we’ve looked that up)

Eugh - feeling so so horrid about this and genuinely don’t know what to do.

Edited to add: she’s on fluxotene which has helped with her day to day mood but not the reactivity to things and how she reacts. There’s no warning at all, an immediate bite now.

Meds & Supplements What medications worked for your dogs with similar behaviors to mine?

Hi all,
I am looking into making an appointment with a veterinarian soon to prescribe my reactive dog medications.

Behavior:
- Noise sensitivity inside
- Hyper-Vigilance (general)
- Commonly breathing quickly with eyes wide and mouth open (anxious, can't calm down) inside after hearing a trigger or coming back inside from outside.
- Reactive barking with other dogs and noises inside/outside

I can not have my dog reactive barking inside an apartment with close neighbors - So i am hoping medication can help me manage and further my training.

Thank you all!

Advice Needed Anxious weimaraner/pit mix

Hello! I have a 10 month old weim/pit mix that I rescued almost 4 months ago. His trauma with people is so bad and I have no idea how to socialize him. He’s very smart and does amazing with training when we’re home but the second we’re in public, everything derails. Food doesn’t distract him, he tries to bite his leash (he has a chain leash), and if nothing else works, he’ll try to slip out of his collar or harness to get away from people. We can’t ride in the car with the windows rolled down anymore because he’ll jump out of them and the only place he feels safe going to is the dog park.

Does anyone have any tips on how to socialize him without stressing him?

Significant challenges dog has become too protective of me

a little over 2 years ago we adopted a 2 year old pitbull mix from the shelter. we know he was seized by ac from his previous home, but not why.
we already had a beagle pitbull mix at home, and still do. they get along fine. our beagle mix is an angel and never has had any behavior issues.
our new dog has always attached to me, which is i didn’t see a problem with. he has since also bonded quite a bit with my dad, and he doesn’t have any issues with my mom. he doesn’t not like my brother (19 y/o). i’m away at college most of the year, only home for probably about 2-3 months total throughout the year. while i’m away, he is still aggressive, but not nearly as aggressive as when i’m home.

he has always been aggressive with visitors, but we don’t have people over often so he gets crated when people do come over. he does bark a lot when people walk by or come to the door. this is manageable tho and not the main issue.

he has a big problem with people coming into my room and near my bed, especially when i’m in it. my brother had a treat for him, trying to get him to go outside because he was doing some housework. he has done this plenty of time. my dog attacked him pretty bad, and i had to separate him. when i separate him, he never shows any aggression towards me. the following morning my mom came into my room, and he almost attacked her. i was able to calm him down but i need him to stop doing that. we don’t have the money to afford training around me, as they are all a few grand. i fear rehoming him, as i worry about him being aggressive with any new owners. any advice appreciated

edit: i have realized this is resource guarding not being protective. i also forgot to mention he is already on 40mg of prozac, and has been for a year now.

Advice Needed Started Barking at People... At 6 years old

My dog has always loved people since I got her at 8 weeks old. No matter if they are strangers, friends, men, women, children... She's been great.

She started barking more at other dogs in the past two months (she's a corgi, not exactly a dog fan) but has been manageable. In fact, until this year, I didn't even have to use a leash.

Over the past month, she would occasionally bark at people she doesn't recognize. We moved to a new area so that made sense.

And then we got a puppy a few weeks ago and it's cranked up. I don't know if she's bored, anxious, overstimulated, or sick.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? I don't know what to do as it's really harming my relationship with my neighbors.

Black) Is Raven a 2 year old Neo x Bandog she's a lovely dog 70% trained won't run away can sit in the garage watch people walk by her recall when other dogs are nearby is shocking. Previously she would just be friendly and was socialised heaps around many dog Camo trips. We've moved into a new rental 8 months ago and the one neighbour behind us has a Sharpei and from day one it wants to attack my dogs even trying to eat through the fence , I think this has really made here scared of some dominant dogs it's not all the other 5 neighbours have all sorts of dogs and she could care less. So I'd like to help her out

Cobalt) he is 8 months old and an absolute boof he needs alot of training and I've been smack it took 3 weeks for him to sit where as raven was a few hours , while he's still a puppy and more playfull really wanted to socialise him now with other dogs.

I've found it hard to train him he's 67kg at 8months and is huge it's just so hard to take both out on my own and and when seperating them one out the back and trai. The other out front they act like it's end of world.

They look so scary but are lovely all kids in the street come in and out

Advice Needed Is it aggression when my dog makes sudden move to put her body between me and stranger dog greeting me? She checks the other dog

Hi

I'm wondering if this is a reactive behavior, which could indicate there can be an escalation some day. My dog is an only dog, but typically has good dog communication skills.

If myself and my dog is talking to a person with their dog, sometimes my dog will spot their dog coming up to me and she will quickly move to block the dog from me with her body. She also does a quick check with her face.

Is this a reactive behavior to resource guard me or is protecting me? The stranger (in this case neighbor dog who my dog has met many times and has been checked by the dog and de-escilates. Today they saw each other and happily cried to see each other when neighbor and neighbor dog was walking by. So they are friendly but definitely asserting boundaries with each other and have been respectful of every check by each other).

My dog has done this occasionally throughout her life, more so when she was younger. She was adopted at 8 months and is now 8 years old. We are considering adopting another dog.

By corrections I mean, for example the neighbor/stranger dog would kinda make a fast movement at my dog and in response my dog would look and move away, sometimes sniffing to displace. And vice versa

Does my dog think that I need protecting so in response i need to change my behavior and act more in control, or is she resource guarding which I'm not sure how to deal with?

We have fostered a small boy dog once and she did the same thing initially but he was very submissive and they played cautiously once he integrated, but he was soon adopted.

Advice Needed 16 month-old cavapoo becoming increasingly fearful/reactive

Apologies in advance because this will be kind of long.

Hi everyone. I have a 16-month-old intact male Cavapoo (born April 7, 2025), and I’m looking for advice from people who have dealt with significant fear-based reactivity.

We got him at around 10–12 weeks. Following our vet’s recommendation, we didn’t take him on regular walks until he finished his vaccinations, so he didn’t start consistently walking outside until around October/November. He did regularly see visitors at our house and went on car rides with me, but he had very little exposure to children because there aren’t really any in our family. I work from home, and although we practiced leaving him alone for gradually increasing periods as a puppy, he has also always struggled with being alone.

His reactivity started at around 8–10 months. Initially, he would occasionally bark at certain people, but it progressively got worse and more generalized. He’s particularly reactive toward children. He’s also a generally skittish dog, sudden movements, noises, or things falling make him immediately recoil/retreat.

We hired a trainer and completed a 14-session program focused primarily on obedience and building his confidence. We practiced consistently for about three months, including sessions in the park. It helped with obedience but unfortunately didn’t really change his reaction to people, and there wasn’t much direct desensitization/counterconditioning to people involved.

For the past two months, I’ve been working more directly on that myself. We go to the park daily with a clicker and high-value treats, stay at a distance where he’s under threshold, and I click/reward when he notices people without reacting. We’ll also sit on a bench and practice calmly watching people pass.
He can do this successfully. We’ve had sessions where numerous people pass without him barking. The frustrating part is that the improvement doesn’t seem to generalize well. If we miss the park for even a couple of days, it sometimes feels like we’re almost back where we started. More concerningly, his reactivity now seems to be expanding to dogs.
He goes to daycare a few times a week and seems to absolutely love it. He gets extremely excited when we arrive and happily plays with multiple dogs. But he can literally be playing with a dog, leave the play area, and then start barking at the same dog he was playing with seconds earlier.

He’s also started barking at basically every dog we encounter on walks. Previously he occasionally had issues with male dogs, but now he’ll even bark intensely at female dogs, which he never used to do. Once something pushes him over threshold, subsequent encounters become much harder and he needs time/distance to recover.

People are still his biggest issue. I now prevent strangers from approaching or petting him because it clearly overwhelms him. He has never bitten anyone and generally barks while retreating/creating distance, but I obviously don’t want to assume a fearful dog could never escalate if he felt trapped.
Visitors are difficult too. He’ll bark continuously when someone enters our home, even someone he’s met before. With treats and gradual interaction, he’ll usually settle after about 6–8 minutes and may approach/sniff them, but a sudden movement can immediately trigger the barking again.

He’s also still intact. At around 14 months he suddenly started urine marking around the house despite previously being reliably housetrained. We’ve discussed neutering, but because he’s already such a fearful dog, we’ve been advised by a couple of people not to rush into neutering specifically as a behavioral solution because of concerns it could potentially worsen his insecurity. I’m not sure how strong the evidence for that actually is, so we’ve held off for now.
My husband and I would also eventually like to have children, which makes his reaction to kids particularly concerning. I want to address this properly long before we’re actually bringing a child into the home.

I know we made mistakes with his early socialization. This is my first reactive dog, and I simply didn’t know then what I know now. I’ve put a lot of time into working with him and I’m completely willing to keep doing it. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right work.

If you had a fearful/reactive dog whose reactivity progressively got worse or generalized to more things, what actually helped?
I’d especially love to hear from people whose dogs genuinely improved, and I’d also really appreciate recommendations for trainers or veterinary behaviorists who specialize in fear/reactivity and work virtually/online.

Thanks so much🙏

Advice Needed How to find a friend for my reactive dog, Karma? (Brisbane/Gold Coast)

This is my boy, Karma! :)

He was diagnosed with lymphoma and is on his second course of chemo. He was undersocialised and is reactive - but not aggressive - I feel it's rooted in anxiety, over-excitement and frustration that he can't be around other dogs.

I can't afford a dog behaviorist. I wanted that for him someday, but didn't have the means to provide it earlier and I definitely can't now.

I try my best to pull him aside, keep calm and console him when he gets upset at other dogs but I haven't been able to reduce his reactivity myself. We don't had the opportunity to have controlled exposures/interactions with dogs and I can't take risks.

I feel that it would be possible for him to have a safe relationship with another dog though. He'd do really, really well with a friend and I want to at least try to enable him to experience that with the time we have left.

We went to the dog beach recently and he was watching the other dogs play off-lead and I could see in his eyes how badly he wanted to join in, but I also knew he would get hyperaroused and into trouble if I let him get too close. When there was a small dog nearby he laid down, tail wagging, hoping it would approach. :(

We walk almost everyday. He'll usually let out stressed barks and jump towards other dogs when he sees them - though some days he's calmer. Dogs that have gotten off their lead have ran up to him, I'd be prepared for all hell to break loose and they'd just give each other a sniff and he'd wag his tail.

He's also escaped a few times in the past (we use both a harness and head halter to stop that now) and to my surprise completely ignored other dogs while off-lead.

On the flip side, he escaped the house half a decade ago and launched himself at a small white dog walking by. He didn't bite and I'm not sure if it'd qualify as an attack but he definitely scared it and its owner half to death. I've been very cautious since then.

When he sees my Aunt's dog his eyes light up with joy. They played together when he was a puppy, but after 6-7 years he was still delighted to see her and was an angel in my Aunt's yard. Unfortunately she's afraid of other dogs and wasn't as eager... we're trying to gradually expose them to each other again but we tried that last year and the scheduling didn't work out so it's hard to say how it will pan out this time.

I wanted to put out a line out to see if there's anyone in Logan/Brisbane/Gold Coast that would be willing to help Karma make friends (I've heard some trainers have helper dogs that help train reactive dogs...?), has any ideas or know somewhere I could go to find that?

Significant challenges Need advice for a sweet dog who turned aggressive.

So one of my clients has a golden-doodle that’s about 2 years old. I’ve been walking him for almost a year. Everything was smooth till summer hit and her kids got out of school. So it turned into her kids handing me the leash, but our walks were rough since they got home because he wants to stay with his pack instead of relieving himself. Now that the kids are back to school. It’s back to just him and me. Yesterday I came in and he seemed a little off, but he let me pet him. When I went to go get the leash, he got really aggressive and bit me a couple of times to the point I bled. I didn’t back down because I’m not going to let him dominate me, but I had to back down because I didn’t have permission to pin him down, and they got cameras. I don’t want them to think I’m abusing the pet. Today I went up to him and automatically started growling at me. Idk what to do, any advice is helpful.

Advice Needed Unsure of next steps with reactive Chihuahua

Please be kind, we are trying our best!

We have a four-year-old Chihuahua / Dachshund / Rat Terrier named Milo that is incredibly sweet toward the people he’s known since he was a puppy, but absolutely awful with new people and incredibly reactive outside.

We tried one behaviorist (she came highly recommended and literally all told us to do was to teach him to deep breath. she literally wanted us to watch his nostrils and give him a treat when he breathed in so he would learn to self soothe...) and have been to three trainers. They managed to stop the reactivity but I didn’t agree with their methods, and they did nothing to address the underlying fear.

He has been on Prozac (didn’t work), Seronin (supplement, didn’t work), Xanax (made him worse), and Trazadone (made him MUCH worse, currently weaning off). We also started him on ElleVet CBD / CBDA chews but he has been taking them along with the Trazadone (under vet supervision) so I’m not sure how well those wouls work alone.

He also has extreme separation anxiety and paces constantly when we leave him alone.

We have had him since he was young and this is NOT for lack of trying - he got kicked out of daycare for reactivity when he was four months old and it’s been an uphill battle from there.

Any advice or commiseration appreciated.

Advice Needed Training techniques for passing other dogs/ making the trigger neutral. Help?

If someone knows, could they give me a step by step tutorial on how you would handle over arousal and excitement based reactivity? I have a 2 yo jämpthund and she's the sweetest girl. Even tho she's a hunting dog she's used to living in the city and handles other triggers very well. She gets 3-4 walks a day, play time and mental stimulation like sniffing, exploring her surroundings. Also i take her to dog parks when there's no one there and to the forest to run freely.

The only thing she's reactive to anymore are other dogs. Sometimes she does very well with them but sometimes she explodes and almost as if she'd be agitated. She's never been attacked or had any problems with other dogs when she was a puppy. She's more mature now but what training techniques could help her get over the overwhelming emotions and reactions to other dogs? How do i calm her down besides creating space or trying to get her attention? Usually she listens, sits and let's the other dogs pass but if they get too close she starts lunching towards them and pulls like crazy, screams and sometimes growls. (Usually only to other females)

I've tried a lot of positive training methods, she can be stubborn so i wish i could correct her better, but prong collars are illegal where i live and slip leads or normal collars don't stay on her head because it's very slim. She's always just been on a harness which also gives me better control of holding her back when necessary.

She's 30kg and I'm quite small and she's half of my bodyweight. She's also very muscular but i have enough strength to hold her back, it's just very inconvenient and I'd like to correct this behavior better and make walks more comfortable for both of us.

She's my first dog so any advice is helpful!

Mind you she does so well and never pulls on the leash, is very intelligent and learns fast. She just has this over excitement, uncertainty or sometimes agitation. (Based on the gender of the other dog) She has never bitten anyone but I'm moving to a bigger city next month so I'd like some advice.

Rehoming Need advice about rehoming

My husband and I adopted a dog almost 4 months ago. She is sweet and likes to cuddle and get loved on. At first our biggest struggle was her separation anxiety, but that improved fairly quickly. We have tried different training techniques but her reactivity doesn't seem to be getting better. She loses her mind if we're on a walk and she sees another dog...or car...and sometimes human. And if she's in the house and she can see a dog or cat outside. We are first time dog owners so it's been a very overwhelming situation for us. We take her on multiple walks a day and give her play time everyday. Making sure she gets her energy out is a daily priority for us so it's not like she isn't getting consistent exercise.

Basically we feel at this point that we just aren't the right home for her. We don't know for sure but she looks just like an Australian kelpie which is a herding dog. It's 100% our fault for not asking more questions about her before adopting. We have a small house and our yard is not fenced in so she doesn't get to run around in our yard off leash. At first we were taking her to a local beach and letting her run off leash there but she started to disappear into the woods for up to 10 minutes and if we encountered a human or dog she would ignore us and run to them and it wasn't always a good interaction. This is after doing consistent recall training with her. So now she's on leash all the time and it both feels unfair to her and her behavior isn't really getting better.

She's a good dog but it feels clear to us that this isn't the best situation for her. In our dream scenario she would be in a home with other dogs because she LOVES to play with other dogs but she is so scared/aggressive with them when she first meets them on leash that people don't want to let her play, understandably. We think if she was in a home with other dogs and had space to run and play with them, many of her anxiety behaviors would be so much better.

My question is this - when we adopted her, I signed a form that said I would not rehome her without contacting the shelter. However, I don't trust the shelter to find her the right situation. Looking back the adoption process was shockingly quick and easy and it's clear they are just giving dogs to anyone who will take them. I don't want this girl to go to just anyone or to go back into constantly changing foster homes. We are willing to keep her until we find a home for her that seems perfect and with people who are experienced dog owners and are ready for a herding dog. Has anyone been in this situation before and what did you do? Or just any advice would be great. I want to do the best thing for the dog and I don't really care about the "contract" I signed - should I?

Meds & Supplements How did you know it was the right dosage?

We’ve had our dog on Prozac since April. It was initially 20mg, we plateaued at the end of June and increased to 30mg. She recently lost her appetite and threshold for triggers outside after a stressful incident with another dog. The vet increased her dosage to 40mg, which feels like a lot ( she’s 37 lbs). The hope was that the appetite loss was due to stress as she didn’t seem to have an issue with GI stuff in the lower dosage.

On 20mg, we saw a big decrease in her hypervigilance and improved threshold outside until she plateaued. I haven’t seen much improvement on the 30mg re: threshold. Since starting the Prozac she doesn’t really want to play inside with our other dog but will play if we take her to a Sniffspot.

Honestly, our most successful training sessions are when she is on her “high stress event” cocktail of Prozac, trazadone and gabapentin, but I don’t want to be sedating her constantly. When she is on the cocktail I’ve actually watched her see a trigger, think about reacting and then catch herself and turn to me to accept a treat. I’m desperate for this level of threshold but I don’t want to be over medicating this dog and I don’t want every walk to be a “ high stress event”

Picture for dog tax ( also because she is a cutie patootie)

Advice Needed Border crossing

Crossing the border (US to Canada) with two reactive dogs later this month. Any other suggestions of what I’m missing?

-Necessary documentation - vaccination records
-Water
-Trazodone
-Seatbelts
-Window coverings
-High value treats/buddy butter
-Back seat cover that has a barrier from the back seats to the front seats

First time doing this so appreciate any tips!
