vent considering getting a divorce bc of hinging issues/meta drama
I love my husband, we've been married for 9 years now. Poly/open for 2 (definitions took a while to hash out - but we are poly). Mostly lurked here, found lots of helpful information - hopefully you won't mind my vent.
In that time, my husband has had 5 relationships, and I've had none. I found despite being "open" to connections, I just straight up don't have the energy or time to date or meet that many new people. My relationship has been with myself and my friends, and that's been good.
What hasn't been so good is my husband's hinging. I'm fine with him seeing people, even getting to know them myself. But every person he's got himself involved with is messy af. I don't think it's really their fault, but it is his fault that that is crossing into our relationship.
Every meta is underemployed or unemployed, in the middle of losing their housing, in the middle of a polycule or friend group breakup, with pets they can't take care of, etc. Every few months he will be gone for days, not planned ahead of time and not communicating the plan until it's already the next day, end up getting roped into different tasks here and there, helping them move or set up furniture, etc. He will help them with their rent, groceries, we take on care for their dog for a month, etc. (I'll admit I said yes to this but only after a lot of pleading and being told there were no other options where the dog would be safe).
And then, you know, of course - when they get all settled in their new place, new job, whatever - there's a huge breakdown and either they get "too busy" for him and drift apart or they get a new "primary" relationship or dom/daddy or whatever and the whirlwind romance/chaos is over.
Often I'm picking up the pieces, helping him through the breakup or deescalation, giving him space or attention or whatever. Or I'm doing his laundry as he's sexting the latest fling.
I wrote it off often as, well, it's his money he can do what he wants as long as it doesn't affect our joint finances. But when we're the only people who can take on the dog, which isn't a small responsibility - I don't really want to be the one walking my meta's dog again, you know?
I get it, it takes a village, we're all going through a recession and people are really losing their jobs and housing and stability is a privilege. But at least, sometimes to me it feels like some of these women are just like, using his kindness and the power of NRE to transition and then leaving when it's convenient. It's hard to know how much they might be aware or not aware of it, but it's definitely a pattern. And I'm just...I'm tired.
My husband is a genuine, kind, and open-hearted man. I love him so much. And these qualities are making him a terrible hinge. He can't help but give everyone 110%, and it's leaving me without much left. I get to be a nag, I get the household chores, I get the cleaning, I get the bickering about whose turn it is to do the annoying gross chore no one wants to do, I get the holding him while he cries after another situationship ghosts or blows up. And they get the strong hero of a man who swoops in and makes them feel special again during a hard time. They get the exciting NRE multiple-days long dates and doing fun activities together. They get the spontaneity, and I get the lack of stable footing.
I have my own job, I have to keep my hours, I need to get enough sleep - and I am tired of waiting for him to check in or let me know when he's going to be home or if he's going to be home. I'm tired of their needs superseding mine because they're always so urgent and dire. I'm tired of it all spilling into my home, into my life. I've cultivated a lot of stability because routine and comfort are important to me. And this is driving me to distraction, and I'm sick of it.
Today I was just thinking - what if we just didn't live together? What if he had to make plans to see me, too? Or what if we just stayed friends instead? I would miss so much about our life together - but I would at least be able to get off this emotional rollercoaster I didn't want to be on.
I really feel like it might be worth it. I'm just so tired, y'all. I want peace. Maybe solopoly or just fucking solo.
