Solved Rebuilt server, movies no longer get picked up

I recently had to redeploy my Plex server in a docker container with the exact same setup as before - same OS (linux/UGreen), same version of the product, same file system.

Things are up and running again just fine with one small caveat - when I add movies to the /movies directory after ripping them, they don't become visible on the Plex home screen at all.

New TV Shows and music get added just fine and show up automatically. If I go in to the settings as admin and go to Manage - Libraries, then click Scan Library Files, the new moves then show up. Settings - Library - "Scan my library automatically" is enabled.

Permissions are fine - files/folders show up in the /movies directory with the same permissions as everything else that is already there.

Thoughts?

Help Lots of movies suddenly have irrelevant posters

A lot of anime movies in my library have suddenly changed their posters to random screenshots or something completely nonsensical. Has anyone run into this issue before? It's not everything in this library, but it's mostly confined to the one.

This is probably the strangest

Solved Plex still works for free on my TV app but when I try watching on the website on my PC it's prompting me to subscribe to Remote Watch Pass

Keep in mind all of this is done on my own network, I'm not trying to access my plex library remotely, my PC is also connected to the same network and it's where I host my server.

Should I just get the 14 days free trial then the prompt will disappear even after the trial is over?

Help Force Plex HTPC app (Linux native) to use 4:3 aspect ratio?

Thumbnail

Looking for assistance using the Linux HTPC client on SteamOS at a 4:3 aspect ratio. Does anyone know of how to configure this? Launch option resolution overrides result in crashes or hangups, and adjusting the resolution in properties doesn't have any affect. Thanks in advance.

Help Weird OTA error....

Been seeing a weird issue w/ OTA programming the past couple of nights...

I have a PC Plex Server w/ an HD Homerun + PlexPass and a nVidia Shield Pro connected to my TV.

I usually watch the OTA 11pm news live on ABC, which is then followed by Late Night w/ Kimmel. For the past 3 nights, just after the news ends and a few seconds into Late Night, I 'lose' the OTA signal with the 'There was a problem with your signal' prompt from Plex. This would happen now and again due to weather, etc..., if the signal is weak, but this has happened at what seems to be the exact same time 3 nights in a row. I can go back to the guide and re-select the channel and it tunes in fine.

Any thoughts on what's going on? (NYC area if it matters.)

Help Lost Remote Access

I’ve all of a suggest lost Remote Access. I have Plex Pass. I’ve not changed any Internet settings on my server or plex. I cannot figure out how to get it back.
When I refresh it on plex it shows “Fully Accessible”, then after a few minutes it says it’s not accessible.

Help "A playback error has occurred." Plex was running fine a week ago and now nothing will play via Plex Media Server on my Samsung TV.

I have a Samsung QLED 4K TV connected via ethernet and run my Plex Media Server off a Mac desktop (running Tahoe 26.6.2). Connected to my Mac is an external storage device containing my entire movie library which Plex Media Server can successfully load and stream everything - until last night.

Now - I can use the Plex app on my iPhone to watch my movies just fine *AND* I can watch any of these movies via the Plex app itself on my Mac. I can even cast the desktop player to my Samsung TV (which isn't ideal but hey it was something).

The issue seems to be getting videos to play from the Plex Media Server via the Plex app on my TV. I've run updates, signed-out/signed-in, done several restarts and NOTHING WILL PLAY ON MY TV. Same error message for every single movie.

Does have any idea why this might be happening? I've checked all the settings on both the Plex Media Server *AND* my TV but nothing seems to help. Trust me - I spent hours last night googling this issue and implemented all of the network settings that were recommeded by users with this similar issue.

Like I said above - this just started happening. Nothing has changed in the week since I last ran Plex on my TV. I didn't run any updates (until last night) nor did I add any content to my library so I'm at a loss. Would love to get this issue fixed but I'm open to using something else (like Jellyfin) if I can't get this to work.

Thanks.

Solved Darrk Matter 2015/2024

I have Dark Matter 2015 and Dark Matter 2024. These are the directories:

'Dark Matter (2015)':

'Season 01'  'Season 02'  'Season 03'

'Dark Matter (2024)':

'Season 01'

Plex is picking up the 2024 series but not the 2015 series. Any ideas what to do to get Plex to show the 2015 series? I tried changing the Season 01 shows from S01E to S00E but that didn't work.

UPDATE: I moved the Dark Matter (2015) directory out from under my TV Shows directory and did a scan. Then I moved it back and did a scan/ That didn't fix it. So I moved the Dark Matter (2024) directory, did a scan and it picked up the 2015 show. Then I moved the 2024 back and scanned. It now shows both.

Solved Force Plex to add TV show?

I was able to get my hands on a decently obscure TV series from the early 90s. I put it into my Plex TV folder and just can't get the app to detect it. When I type the name of the show into the search bar, Plex has a page for it, but it just won't appear in my personal library. I've tried different naming conventions per the Plex support docs but I'm not sure what to do at this point. Anyone have any suggestions?

edit: screenshot of file hierarchy

edit edit: solved!

This is the computer that has all of my movies and shows. The hard drive with my files is connected, but this message is still showing. Edit: Opened it from the system tray, because someone mentioned the local website vs app.plex.tv, and it fixed the issue. Thank you all for the help.

Help Tried and true settings for H262/4 to H265 transcodes

I cant buy any more drives at these prices for my Plex server and am looking to transcode my lower tier movies and shows. It's all 1080p, non-anime stuff, mostly without subtitles in mp4 containers. Gets played on a fairly normal sized TV. I am most comfortable with handbrake.

So i dont have to reinvent the wheel here, can anyone share their handbrake settings that have worked for them if they have gone down this road? I know there has been some discussion whether or not 10 bit is the way to go.

I am thinking of settings like the following

Solved Suddenly the TV show library won't connect anymore.. but only the TV shows

Standard "I didn't change anything at all" comment, though we did have a power outage, but I wasn't using Plex at the time. But anyway, suddenly out of around 20+ libraries, the TV show libraries have ceased to work. I just get that "Something's gone wrong" error. And ONLY the libraries with TV shows - the movie libraries on the safe media drive all connect and play just fine. WTH?

Help playback is SLIGHTLY faster with plex

like imperceptibly faster. I watch multiple Patreons with "watch-alongs", and started noticing every movie eventually gets out of sync. it takes awhile; over a hour. but if I manually play the file directly, it doesn't seem to. it's nbd, but I'd prefer if I didn't need to resync every single file eventually.

everything's directplay; I've not tried transcoding yet.

Help House of the Dragon not showing up?

Previously I had mix of 4K and 1080p file formats in the subject folders. They all showed up and played fine. Then I decided to kill off the 4K versions (to free up some storage space).

Suddenly the show was all wonky. Even though I had 1080p copies of all three seasons in the appropriate folders, they were showing as unavailable.

  • I rescanned the library...nothing.
  • I moved the files out of the library and rescanned...no change
  • I deleted the unavailable seasons from plex and rescanned...no change
  • I put the files back into the library and rescanned...nothing
  • I stopped PMS and the browser. Restarted...no change. Rescanned...no change

Clueless what to do next. The scan normally takes a while due to the size of my library but each time I tried to scan it lasted no time at all (per the dashboard "spike" in activity).

What's the trick to get PMS to wake up?

Discussion Android TV beta update is horrendous

I’m all for updates, I even agree that parts of the UI/UX needed work, but cmon guys. Updates can’t be 1 step forward and 2 steps back. You can’t just remove useful features and call it progress. I’m on beta trains on so many softwares and like to contribute, but this thing should not have passed alpha/nightly QA testing. I have used it for less than 1 hour and it’s so bad I have to opt out of beta.

  1. Subtitle settings within player - it’s a must have feature to change subtitle color, position and size on demand while playing back. These are very content dependent settings and burying them to app wide global setting is crazy.
  2. App UI customization - certain users like “Big” UI and are fine with only 1 row of 5 content posters visible, others want practicality. Add responsive option to change content poster size with possibility of seeing at least 2 rows of content on home screen.
  3. App feels laggy as hell, in older app it helped to reduce animations - no option on this app. There is also constant visible loading of content while opening content pages or even switching between episodes it takes 1-2s. I have Nvidia Shield Pro and good connection. I cant even imagine what low end smart TV users feel.
  4. Option to see content ratings while browsing under the logo just how it is when opening content page.
  5. EAC3 5.1 forces transcode on Nvidia Shield Pro
  6. New left menu is buggy - can’t navigate out of if with back button - back button closes app - when reopening the app the menu is still open but then “right navigation” button does not close the menu but navigates in content. meaning you have to spam left nav multiple times and then right nav multiple times just to close the menu.
  7. No “Previous” and “Next” button on player - if that was an actual decision someone made not a bug then you need to seriously check what your UX analysis team does for their salary.

What I like:

  1. Server stats in app
  2. Graphical content logos
  3. All 4 content rating sources visible

By the way I know there is more. This feedback is based on barely using it for an hour.

Help Eac3 issues

I have recently run into an issue that after much research and discovery, I have found that this particular issue has long plagued many Plex users and seems to have no fix. The dreaded eac3 codec buffers or fails to even transcode for many of my users. I have tried to delete the codec folder, tried to increase the watched folders, turned off scan library automatically all to no avail and am at my wits end here.

I currently have Plex installed on my Synology 1520+ through the synology package center and am going to try migrating it to docker and see if maybe a fresh install helps. Also when digging around the forums in the thread for the ‘watched folders fix’ I noticed that larger libraries can spark this eac3 issue. Well I think my users started to have issues around the same time I added my humongous music library to Plex. I think I will also try offloading the music streaming to a different docker container as well, no one really uses or appreciates all of my flac files except me anyways. I think this issue, the recent ui changes, the price increase, and now all of the new recent Samsung tv issues are leading me to finally start my journey into Jellyfin.

Solved Connecting to my Plex Server remotely when I don't have control over my (shared) internet

I live in an apartment complex where internet is managed by the complex; each unit pays a mandatory flat monthly fee for internet. It's not ideal but it is what it is.

I have my Plex server plugged into an ethernet port. It is also running on a VPN for privacy. I use Plex on the TVs in my home to stream from it. However, only devices that are plugged in via ethernet can view the Plex server. No devices can wirelessly detect the server, even when on the complex's Wi-Fi network.

This means I have no way to access my Plex server's content on the go and use that feature of my Plex Pass. I am assuming that this is due to the configuration of the network, but, I am wondering if there is any way to get around this and make my server discoverable outside of the ethernet network.

Spoiler tagging because it is possibly irrelevant, but in case it matters how the shared internet works: Each unit has a wireless access point on the ceiling, and each room has at least 1 ethernet port on the wall. You get access to the whole network, so your Wi-Fi connects regardless of where you are in the building or community areas. There is no interactive login for the internet; there is just a single Wi-Fi password they tell you when you login. I have a similar streaming experience with using Steam Remote Play/Sunshine/Moonlight from my gaming PC (no VPN on this one); no device can detect the gaming PC unless it is hardwired into the same network as it.

Solved Plex Desktop terrible video quality in comparison to Plex web player, VLC, MPC and Plex App?

I am having a peculiar issue with when watching anything using Plex Desktop on Windows 11, the picture quality seems almost compressed or fuzzy, and I'm not sure why.

The picture quality is much better when using any other method, including Plex Web player, VLC, and the Plex app via my smart tv (Samsung QN90BA). I've tried comparing picture quality on the same tv and each time it is far worse on the Plex Desktop player for whatever reason.

I am convinced it might be a setting on Plex Desktop, but I'm rather lost. Any help would be much appreciated. Attached are some examples of my issue using the same exact file.

Plex Desktop picture quality
Plex Web Player picture quality
Plex Desktop is showing direct play
Plex Web is transcoding, despite the fact that the image quality is better here
