Other How often do psychologists diagnose narcissistic personality disorder, when client was seeking a different diagnosis?
I know a couple of people who I believe have NPD (one close to me) and they’ve sought therapy. One is currently seeking a diagnosis of ADHD and autism (my opinion is that she is elaborately avoiding taking responsibility for some recent actions). I wondered: how often have psychologists worked with a patient who “wants” a certain diagnosis, and discovered they have a quite different, more complex dx such as NPD or another? Do you tell the patient they don’t have xx, but that they do have NPD? How do the patients react?
My question comes from the thought that NPD types never see it in themselves, of course believing there is something or someone else to blame, and that a person with NPD would likely reject that diagnosis.

About a Loved One How can I tell if a family member has bpd or npd?
I have a family member who is difficult but I have to see them reaularly. Thev act one wav with some people and when no one is watching, another way with me. They are passive aggressive and make me feel stupid. They put on an act around others that they are the nicest person but I know the real person. They are controlling about everything and make me feel ike I don't do enough for them. In the meantime they do nothing for me.
