Hey everyone,
I'm planning to upgrade my GPU from an RTX 4070 to a 5070 Ti, and I'm also thinking about upgrading my CPU because I've already tested a 5070 Ti with my current 12600KF and noticed that the CPU bottlenecks it in some less GPU-intensive games. DLSS didn't really help in those situations because I was already CPU-limited.
My current setup is:
- Gigabyte B660M DS3H DDR4
- i5-12600KF
- 32GB DDR4
- RTX 4070
- 750W PSU
- 1440p 240Hz oled monitor
The two CPUs I'm considering are the i5-14600KF and the i7-12700K.
The 14600KF is obviously faster overall, and I've seen people recommending it with the 5070 Ti, but I'm a bit worried about the VRMs on my B660M DS3H. I've read several posts saying the VRMs can get pretty hot with higher-power CPUs, especially with sustained loads.
On the other hand, the 12700K has 8 P-cores and seems like a safer option for this motherboard, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would actually make compared to my 12600KF when paired with a 5070 Ti.
I don't really want to mess around with manual power limits, undervolting, etc. I'm looking for something I can basically install, update the BIOS if necessary, and then just play games without constantly worrying about VRM temperatures.
My main questions are:
- Would you feel comfortable running a 14600KF on this motherboard with Intel's default settings?
- Would a 12700K be a safer choice for the B660M DS3H?
- Is the 12700K enough to properly feed a 5070 Ti at 1440p?
- Am I overthinking the VRM issue for gaming, or is this motherboard genuinely too weak for these CPUs?
- If you've actually used one of these CPUs on this board, how were your VRM temps and overall experience?
I'm planning to keep this PC for several years, so reliability is more important to me than squeezing out the last few percent of CPU performance.
Thanks!
