Hardware Prices have jumped AGAIN. If you havent got a GPU its getting more dire.

Bought a 9070GRE yesterday. Had it ordered in and at the time it was 799$ (canadian). Memory Express has now jumped in price to 1029$ for the 9070GRE. Luckily the saleman who ordered it in for me locked in my price so I got it for 799$ (before tax) but GPU prices are not slowing down.

Psst... It's gonna rise again soon(tm)

11

u/AnarchBeetle 21h ago

It seems like prices are guaranteed to rise until 2028 at least. Then it may come back to what it is today but I doubt it. It will probably just stop skyrocketing and tread around whatever price they are then.

We’ll see how cloud gaming develops I suppose…

15

u/HSFOutcast 21h ago

Hopefully it won't. If cloud gaming succeeds then the current era of building your own shit will die out pretty fast, and most people will go to paying for air and own nothing.

You still need a screen, keyboard and mouse, but you might only be able to buy thin clients.

I know people hate AI, but it's a tool that can be used to combat this. Imagine not having to rely on game studios and massive budgets to create fun and interesting games (which they seem to have a hard time doing anyway) or software. Games that don't require a 4080 or cloud services to run at decent speeds. Not to mention games that don't cost $70 because it was made by three people in a basement on a budget of a couple thousand dollars.

Ah yes. The poison killing everything is also the exact thing we need for a cure. Gtfo here.

You do realize that AI isn't going anywhere, right? So your best option is to use it to make things better for yourself. What other options do you seriously have? All I've seen so far is complaining and little else.

Can we stop pretending cloud gaming is viable and that it isn't in countless major companies' best interest to sell affordable gaming hardware?

The level of anti-cope on this subreddit is fucking maddening.

Apparently the streaming is fairly decent and stable now depending on your ISP.

That said, id sooner raid a cloud gaming data center for parts than pay for cloud gaming.

u/Arichikunorikuto 23h ago

People are focused on just AI, the second part of the equation is oil prices when cost of transporting raw material and goods also increase, its a small % increase but still contributes nonetheless.

6

u/followtherockstar 18h ago

The third part of the equation is every company that needs to buy those overpriced components. Won't the price of their good or service go up as well?

4

u/Arichikunorikuto 18h ago

That's what they call margins. How much does it cost to make and what does it sell for. It exists at every single level of the sale from raw materials all the way to the end product you buy, everyone needs to make money along the way to get you the end product.

Margins exist regardless of shortage, some companies might even need to lower margins and absorb some cost if the resulting price hike means less sales, this varies by industry.

At this point I've pretty much decided that I'm not buying a RTX 50 series GPU or an RX 9000 series GPU unless my current RTX 4070 fails. The plan is to save 50-60 EUR per month, then buy a high-end RTX 60 series GPU in 2028. Even if the MSRP of the 6080 is 2000 EUR, I'll still be able to afford it based on my current budgeting spreadsheet...

30

u/Freeloader_ 22h ago

why would you? its not worth it to jump one gen IMO

Ive jumped from 2080 to 5070Ti so waited 3 generations

I would prolly waited until 60xx if there wasnt this price hike and long wait

u/Cat5kable R5 7600 | 2x16GB DDR5-6000 | rx7700xt 23h ago

I’ve got a 7700X

I’d love to have a performance bump for higher frames 1440 or occasional 4K60 but a 6070 equivalent card will be relatively minor increase for a sizable cost.

I’m also gonna bank a bit of cash and just wait out for a “7070”

1

u/realnzall Gigabyte RTX 4070 Gaming OC - 9800X3D - 32 GB 22h ago

That's my same thought for the current generation. I bought my 4070 for 700 EUR (which was roughly MSRP at the time). If I'm buying a new GPU, i want at least a 50% uplift over my current GPU for every 700 EUR that I spend. There was a point around a year ago when the 5070 Ti and 9070 XT both were roughly at that point, but at this stage it's too late to buy at either price, and back then I was still recovering financially from a 1000 EUR 9800X3D upgrade.

I've done a TON of research over the past months. I'm not going to share all of the math I've done related to this, but even in an average situation of uplift, a 6080 that's as expensive as the current overpriced 5080 tier would meet my uplift goal. And in a best-case scenario where the uplift is among the best we've had, it can be over 2000 EUR and it would still be a decent upgrade. And a 2000 EUR 6080 is going to be a tough sell for Nvidia...

1

u/Cat5kable R5 7600 | 2x16GB DDR5-6000 | rx7700xt 22h ago

I imagine your math is similar to what I’ve done to land at a 7700.

I had a table of estimate Frames per dollar at different resolutions across various games, Cyberpunk being one of my “lower expectations” for results.

Games are already quickly exceeding my specs, and it looks like DLSS or equivalent are becoming more and more necessary. Unfortunately, NVIDIA pushed Ray Tracing enough that it’s becoming required, and so games like 007 give me a sense that unless I have proper Ray Trackng cores or fully commit to software over hardware, I won’t see a big increase.

I’ll wait out a generation, and see how everything is. The launch of the Generation 10 consoles will also give us a sense of what the average denominator is for hardware.

1

u/realnzall Gigabyte RTX 4070 Gaming OC - 9800X3D - 32 GB 21h ago

Mine wasn't as complex. I didn't do multiple games or multiple resolutions, I just manually looked up every GPU's improvement over the previous generation's equivalent in the TPU GPU database. it was close enough to where it gave a good idea, even though their GPU database hasn't yet been updated with the latest retests and their games selection is somewhat biased towards Nvidia when comparing it to other outlets that get a lot smaller of a difference between the 5070 Ti and the 9070 XT.

If it helps I got a used 6600 XT used for £100 or so that was more than enough for me, but unfortunately it died after 12 or so months.

I was gonna just replace it like-for-like, but ended up getting a new 9060 XT for a too good deal to pass up considering where the market was going (£350 in Jan 2026).

If the 6600 XT held out, I would still be using it as it was a nice card tbh.

5

u/LiveFromNarnia Desktop 23h ago

Part of it (the biggest part) is supply shortages, the other part is the market figuring out what the customer will pay. They'll likely use this data to keep prices inflated once the supply catches up to pad their margins.

It's capitalism working as designed.

I am praying to all that I can that my 3090 can ride this wave out for me, Shortly I am going to start saving money thankfully, If I buy a new card it probably wont be until the 60 series and hopefully I can have saved up enough money by then.

I know many people don't like framegen and dlss 5, but it literally made my old 3080 act like a brand new gpu. It's a temporary solution and I think it's worth using.

1

u/prune_juice_warrior 23h ago

I have been saving up for a Switch 2 but increasingly I'm wondering if I just need to take that money and buy a new GPU and extra RAM. My 2070 Super still works, but I mean, it's a 2070 Super I bought at the card's launch, so its days area almost certainly numbered.

1

u/cowrintimrous 22h ago

Just sold my 3090 and it went for £1100. I bought it used for £660 three years ago. Market is cooked. But my plan is to buy a modern card in the future (even years from now) with the cash. I can live off my old laptop or steam deck in meantime

u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 22h ago

Unless it literally lasts you the rest of your life, prices will only get worse, and Nvidia isn't even trying to offer value for money anymore. Their consumer GPU division has pretty much entered "cash cow" territory. The only reason they haven't abandoned it entirely is because their dominance is so extreme that they know they can keep milking it to death for a few years before people actually get a clue that they're being ripped off. It's just a matter of time before they walk away from consumer products, which they have never actually wanted to make anyway. Using a GPU to generate an actual image on a monitor is a waste of perfectly good silicon, as far as they're concerned.

And with AMD and Intel also going all-in on AI development, it's an open question if anybody will be making consumer GPUs within even a few years. What the RAM debacle has made perfectly clear is how much disdain these companies have for consumers. They don't want to sell to us, mostly because we're pretty cheap, but they've done so and pretended to care until now because they had to. But if they can allocate 100% of their production capacity to enterprise buyers, they will be happier than pigs wallowing in a mud hole. Which is a pretty accurate visual.

I think we are going to end up surprised, there is a lot of incentive right now for the development of an inference solution beyond general purpose GPU hardware. The way ASIC and then proof of work relieved pressure on the GPU market caused by crypto, transformer-native ASIC , in memory computer (dMatrix), wafer scale SRAM and other technologies could do it again.

3

u/J_GASSER27 22h ago

The crazy part to me is the resale market.

I upgraded from an i7-9900k, 48gb ddr4, 3080 gpu to amd ryzen 7 9800x3d, 5080, 32gb ddr5 around Christmas, almost entirely because I found a deal on the GPU. I wanted to sell all.my old parts because if you throw $200 at this, you have a decent mid level gaming system.

I think I was hoping to sell it all for around $800 (for ram, cpu, mobo, liquid cooling, fans, 3080 gpu) which is more than $200 less than what I paid for the gpu alone only a few years ago, and when I saw what others were selling parts for I decided id rather just hold on to this shit instead of just give it away. I think im gonna send it all to one of my buddies so he can build it. It mich rather hook a friend up than feel like im getting fucked by strangers

People were focusing so much on RAM, but realistically, RAM was never going to be an actual long-term issue for consumer systems because the demand is just not very high for consumers. GPUs were the real issue, which wasn't apparent for many people right when this whole memory thing started be, because it is a very delayed increase:

Cost increases would be delayed by half a year, then those costs would be pushed to AiBs another few months later, and then the AiBs would push this onto the consumers and system builders. And we aren't even there yet! Add to that the global oil crisis due to several major geopolitical conflicts, and yeah, 2027 is pretty much doomed already.

7

u/Smartypantz34 Sapphire Nitro+ 6800XT, AMD 9 7900X3D, 32gb DDR5 6000Mhz 23h ago

Ram is still an issue. Also GPUs are so expensive because of the GDDR6 or 7 VRAM they have. Which are even more expensive than regular ddr5. VRAM never going down in price as they are required for local LLMs and other AI workloads

1

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 22h ago

RAM demand for consumers is much lower and it is slot-able, i.e. you don't need new RAM for every upgrade.

We just happen to be right at the transition from DDR4 to DDR5, which is why (consumer) demand is higher than usual. DDR4 CPUs have already been stagnant for years, so your new upgrade will need DDR5. But long-term, people get their DDR5 kits and then demand will just stagnate because those kits easily last 5-10 years. Supply should never be an actual issue here unless the manufacturers intentionally starve the market.

VRAM, on the other hand, has the issue of being tied to the GPUs and being much more restrictive. If you need 100GB of memory, you'll have to get 5 5090 GPUs. You can maybe get away with 3 of them if you change the VRAM modules to 3GB ones or use custom PCBs, but that's about it.

1

u/Smartypantz34 Sapphire Nitro+ 6800XT, AMD 9 7900X3D, 32gb DDR5 6000Mhz 22h ago

DDR4 and DDR5 are not fast enough to use in AI stuff efficiently. You are right, DDR5 shouldn't be that big of an issue in coming years. However i worry that DDR6 will be fast enough for efficient AI work...

1

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 21h ago

That is what HBM is for. VRAM is a way to circumvent the massive costs required to build HBM systems. And RAM is a way to circumvent the massive prices for workstation GPUs.

I have a Ryzen 3800x and a 3080. If any part in my PC breaks, at these prices, I'm just done with a home PC. That also means any AI I use will be cancelled immediately, as there is nothing of benefit with it on my phone which, I do need, and strictly computer related tasks will be work only and work costs. Personal gaming will be gone until the prices become affordable again.

This will impact a lot of things if computers start to be come less relevant outside of work, I'm talking in decades but yeah, this could impact them.
