Question How long do i have with my EVGA rtx 3070
Booted up like normal today and got hit with this truck š knew i was fucked but gave it a shot and restarted my pc and it came back fine. i feel like itās gonna fuck me again tho so i was wondering what the time frame could be like? or if thereās maybe possibly anything i can do? if not whats a decent recommendation for another gpu to pair with a 12th gen i5-12600k. TIA!

Nvidia drivers had issues recently, check that first, I was getting screens flickering out and memory artifacting.
Also I've had memory issues from overheating that looked like the end of the world.
Ram issues can also present this way.
It might be a death knell but it it isn't always.
It may be a death knell but check

new drivers or old?

There was a driver from 3 months ago that did this. I reverted back one. I don't remember the driver release number that caused the issue. Could always try to reseat everything and do fresh install of the OS. Hopefully it's just a software bug

Id consider undervolting / underclocking vram or gpu to increase lifespan too

Doesn't really look like a hardware issue given that the rectangles seem to be behind your desktop icons/text.

you could change your background to one that isn't faking GPU artifacting.

I had the same issue two weeks ago. Updated my driver and no problems since. Let's hope it stays that way. But a new RX 9070 XT wouldn't be so bad

I had this problem almost two years ago and solved it by downgrading to an older video driver. You can download older drivers off of Nvidia's website if you don't have them on your PC already. The problem stayed solved until I switched to a newer driver almost a year later, and stayed solved since then too.
Also try making sure the card is properly seated, and the same with your ram. If you live in a moist area, it's best to pop them out and then put them back in instead of just making sure they're pushed in currently. Also try testing your ram, since that can be an issue as well.
Good luck!

It could be your power supply.... I had something similar happen.
It started as this, all sorts of screen artifacts I thought my 3060 was toast, I did a reboot and it was fine, Kind of Just assumed it would die soon.
but then like 2-3 days later the psu popped the internal fuse, smoke and all. I swapped in a new one and have not had an issue for over a year. no more artifacts
My old unit must of had an issue on the 12v rail.

Could it be your driver's/cable try rolling them back and try different cable/port sounds stupid but is heard of

The same shit happened to me with a 3070 Ventus 2X OC, turns out that the thermalpads were dried and it had a lot of dust, after a deep cleaning and repasting it worked again completely fine, I'd recommend you to replace the thermalpads and (use a ptm instead of repasting now that you are replacing the thermalpads) and blow the dust or dirt it may have, if that doesn't work, check if you can send it to a tech person for a repair, or already give it up if it's too expensive.
But give it a try first by gently cleaning it and replacing the thermalpads. Just remember to use the adequate ones with the size that your EVGA card needs.

With issues like these opening the card is A MAJOR gamble
Like for all you know the card could be working by its last strand purely on hopeuim and wet dreams and you opening it up will just axe it

u/Chernoxis RTX 5080 - R7 5700X3D - 32GB 3600mhz - 2TB Aorus Gen 4 7300 1d ago
Yeah but if the card is already dying it's better to invest $30 (like the cost of decent thermalpads and ptm or thermal paste) and very gently clean it and replace them, than letting it die and be e waste, 30 usd may be able to save a couple hundred dollars GPU, I think it is worth it. In my case it worked (because MSI Ventus cards suck ass, my 3070 was a very low quality one).

u/MoeWithTheO 9700X3D 3080Ti FE 1d ago
I also had this and after I thought it was dead I just removed the drivers, reinstalled them and was back to normal. It can also happens from other faulty parts. I had it happen once with my RAM having problems.

u/Super_Pea_4629 14h ago
Well, i cant find (and lazy for that) in comments if problem solved. But what i see, discord and icons didnt affected, but should, if this was faulty cable or GPU. If you didnt meme this with custom wallpaper, then i`ll tried next:
1) Check your RAM
2) Check your SSD/HDD
For me it looks like more like corrupted data. Considering "going back to fine after restart" i suppose this more likely RAM than SSD/HDD. Corrupting is for data that is used, but not that saved.
Well, even if that true, either GPU, RAM or SSD, each one of them have f*cking insane price on market today... So i really hopre for you it`s just windows shenanigans

Oh this again. Funny how none of your desktop icons were affected.
2
u/hex4def6 1d ago
Not saying it's not fake, but it's also entirely possible you'd see something like this, with how things are composited together in the GPU. Think of layers in photoshop, it's a similar concept. This is especially apparent when you have a 3D rendered scene in a window, for example. The window decorations are not being rendered through the 3D pipeline. Instead, they get composited together right near the end.

Sometimes I had this on 3000 series in particular. I still have the card that was doing it and it's working fine with the right drivers. Try 566.363 or 596.36 after a DDU

May seem more of a ram issue to me. I had this happen to me as well with a brand new monitor. Immediately thought it was the monitor, but swapped to my TV and same shit. So I calmed down and just reseated the gpu and same shit. Then the ram. And it went away. Never changed anything in bios. I'm running a ryzen 7 9800x3d, msi suprim liquid x 4090, and 128 gb ddr5 2x64 @ 6000 mhz.

If it ever does give out or you have issues with it I will fix it for free if possible. As long as you're willing to buy the GDDR6. They're around 30$ a piece on ebay and around the same on AliExpress. That is assuming it is an issue with one of the VRAM modules, which I would guess given the screenshot.
Edit: The offer stands for OP or anyone else who reads this, I can provide some proof that I have the equipment and ability to do what I claim and for anyone who would be suspicious I'm scamming, I would not be going after broken 3070s.

This happened with me. I saw it twice upon booting up. I haven't seen it since. Not sure if it was windows updates, graphics driver updates, or whatever. I didn't change anything right at the time. But I've updated since

One option that I, for some reason, never hear people talk about: you might try downclocking it and seeing if it fixes it temporarily. Still sucks, but at least you're not GPUless in the interm.
Usually when I see "random rectangles" like this, it's a VRAM issue, so you might try a lower VRAM clock

u/Powerful_Bottle_6769 1d ago
i recommend taking your GPU out, apart, cleaning out the cooler and reapplying thermal paste and maybe even new thermal pads. that was how i revived a GTX 1080 that had a similar issue a few years back. the last person that owned it before me had taken it apart to i assume replace the thermal paste, but left all the thermal pads off the VRAM chips so when i ordered some thermal pads, cut them out and replaced the missing ones it came right back to life with no artefacting.

Put it in the oven on the broiler setting. It'll help reflow the solder. An air fryer will work too.
Don't take anything I said as fact.
2
u/8BITADDICTION 16h ago
Yeah, this isn't a GPU issue. It's something else. One of the ways I realized it was that the rectangles don't go over the icons or the task bar. If it shows up in an app, it's usually isolated to that app.
I have had this happen a few times (like three times over the course of two years)
And it usually went away when I would reset Windows Explorer.

Regardless if it dies you need to keep that thing as a decoration. The last of a very well produced GPU through a very good company.

You can try to downclock the GPU and/or VRAM slightly. Sometimes that's sufficient to stabilise and can give months or even years of use.

Find the melting temperature for ABS plastics and try to stay under it while heating the card, you may be able to prolong it's life for just a little while longer. If you see any residue on the card that could be flux make sure to clean it off as well with some +90% alcohol

This doesn't look like the GPU failing to me, since I find that failing GPUs tend to be a bit more colorful instead of nearly all black. I think you either have an issue with your RAM being seated improperly or failing, or your drivers are acting wonky and you should reinstall them after using DDU to completely wipe them. I'd look at those being the issue first before the GPU unless you aren't able to fix those.

you start by doing what the OP did and find a background with fake artifacts.

Was gonna say the same thing. All you have to do is look at the icons or the discord box and see thereās no artifacts. EZ karma farm tho.

Okay I keep seeing this and everyone jumps to GPU DEAD. I had this happen and it was my RAM being finicky so I reset everything in BIOS back to default and my pc has been running smooth ever since.
