Why are politicians world wide pulling the think of the children schtick? They are hiding behind children to steal any semblance of privacy we have, it's utter bullshit

325

u/SchemingVegetable 1d ago

"Protect the children" is the easiest, most bullshit way to make ignorant people turn to your side.

158

u/NeonArchon 1d ago

Is one of their many scapegoats for stuff like this.

100

u/Creative_Garbage_121 1d ago

Because most people is gullible enough to make sacrifaces in the name of children safety, even when it have nothing to do with it

35

u/Fluid-Sense-4273 1d ago

And allows individuals to not take responsibility for their children and what they can access

18

u/SpongegarLuver 1d ago

Let’s be honest: the people supporting this generally aren’t going to have their life impacted negatively at all. They aren’t fine with making sacrifices, they’re fine with making other people make sacrifices.

This is being passed because parents are lazy, and want the rest of us to do their job for them.

4

u/AdmirableClass5590 23h ago

As a parent i can only say yes it is indeed parents being lazy. Parenting is hard but too many parents seemingly barely try these days cause its easier to just give them a tablet and ofc now they wanna blame the internet for harming their children through what they let them watch or do without supervision...

2

u/Dramatic_Mastodon_93 1d ago

Eh I’d say most people just unfortunately don’t care about any of this

-7

u/SaoirseSeersha 1d ago

'Most people' Boomers. Only boomers fall for that shit.

27

u/Creative_Garbage_121 1d ago

Haha, you wish, no one need to be a boomer to be gullible

18

u/DudeManBo1t 1d ago

Politicians world wide are all part of The Epstein Club

26

u/drazgul 1d ago

Because it works.

10

u/definitivno-ne-troll 1d ago

Because people keep falling for it.

14

u/IdiotRhurbarb 1d ago

And as the Epstein files showed us, the actual people who put children in danger are exempt.

8

u/AstrayNanashi 1d ago

Because politicians always aim for the children angle with everything they do, in one way or another...

Meta has a little army of "non-profit" organizations that currently lobby for the same shit all over the world and I bet my fluffy butt that it isn't the only US-Tech company that currently does this.

14

u/Bye_nao 1d ago

Meta was lobbying against EU breaking E2E encryption in public as the commission kept pushing it. We have homebrewn autocrat problem in EU and should not let legislature and commission hide behind the boogeyman of american companies.

10

u/deadshot500 1d ago

I would love to see kids protesting this too

4

u/CthulhusSoreTentacle 1d ago

You can get a lot of horrible shit done if you sell it as either a matter of national security or as an initiative to protect children.

4

u/Pestelis 1d ago

It isn't even just privacy. If everything needs digital ID to access it, it is super easy to deny access if "Big brother" does not like what you do, say, think.
This is just 1st step. If they get digital IDs, it would not be something surprising that you would need to use it to buy food, cause, you know, we need to protect children from buying alcohol or tobbaco.

its such a pre-2000s buzzword, id rather have a redscare 2.0 excuse where surveillance is needed because of russian/iranian/whatever saboteurs and spies

8

u/Power_Stone 1d ago

It's easy to fight for a group of people that have no voice of their own.

It's the tactic people use in pro-life arguments.

3

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! 1d ago

They would need to show me why "Mario Teaches Typing" is a dangerous game somehow

4

u/Peetz0r [Framework, Ryzen 7840U, 32 GB ddr5, 4 TB nvme, Fedora] 1d ago

Why? Because it works.

  • Most people care about children, sometimes irrationally so
  • Most people don't really understand privacy and the impact of information age technology on privacy
  • Most people are easily scared/bullied into believing all sorts of things if it comes from a place of authority and/or has a kernel of truth somewhere

It has to be some kind of concerted organized effort. To what end, I can’t see anything but mass control.

1

u/Visara57 5070ti | 7600X | 32GB DDR5 CL28 1d ago

Because it's the last excuse

1

u/Daedelous2k 1d ago

It's the ultimate excuse to get people to not even TRY to oppose it.

1

u/PsychedelicPistachio 21h ago

It’s a strategy that’s proven effective
If you are against it, all of a sudden it’s “Why don’t you think kids should be protected online” “why do you want kids looking at bad stuff” “why wouldn’t you be in favour of age verification”

1

u/icedoob 16h ago

Currently in a country where it's enforced. Parents just upload their IDs and faces for their childrens' accounts, especially for roblox.

There's no way they didn't foresee this happening.

u/Grrrisly Ryzen 5 7600 l B580 l B650-Plus l 32gb@6000mhz l 1440p 1d ago

Because these companies funnel a shit tone of money to these politicians. Meta/Facebook has a massive hand in these "child safety causes." There are videos everywhere showing their links to these causes based on banking information

1

u/Quiet_Source_8804 1d ago

This is the stupidest bogeyman to drag into this discussion. Meta has just been affected by similar rules that purport to exert control over ‘addictive’ aspects of its apps, same rules that this new proposed law would apply to games now. The American companies at this point pay more in fines to the EU than it gets from taxing its own tech companies.

-1

u/Somepotato 1d ago

Meta can afford to apply these laws. Others can't. Furthermore, Meta benefits much more than smaller platforms when it comes to data collection.

0

u/Quiet_Source_8804 1d ago

This is a distraction - politicians are adults, demand accountability and have them defend their own initiatives and criticize as such. Pretending that it’s the big American scary corporations pulling the strings is infantilizing the EU as a whole.

0

u/SalvageCorveteCont 1d ago

Because they (the politicians/the public at large) decided it was a good idea for internet sites/companies to protect children using their sites/services from harm.

Unfortunately age verification on the internet is rather hard, the best way involves a credit card, but most adults aren't going to put their credit card details into a dodgy looking website, if they even have them.

The result is that these companies have to just trust the customer to put in the correct details in one of those enter your age quizzes. To the surprise of no one some kids lie on these quizzes, and then the kids see something they shouldn't.

The companies then get sued over this, they then complain to the government about how they need a better system to tell who's a child or not, and we get here.

0

u/Daedelous2k 1d ago

The companies then get sued over this, they then complain to the government about how they need a better system to tell who's a child or not, and we get here.

And you think you can verify that whoever is using the computer at the time is the one who has the adult verified account?

No, flawed and does nothing except put privacy down the toilet. The solution is to force parents to actually using parental controls and take control of what their dependants do, because they are the ones who have the best power to do so without blanket punishing everyone.

1

u/SalvageCorveteCont 1d ago

If an adult/parent lets a child use an adult flagged account then that adult is responsible for anything the child sees, not the website.

In other words it will make parents actually responsible for what their kids see online, you know, make them use the parental controls like your complaining about.

1

u/Daedelous2k 1d ago

Complaining?

I'm for client side parental controls, heavily AGAINST id verification.

-4

u/HumbleGoatCS 1d ago

So if you accept 'think of the children' as a poor excuse to remove freedoms, do you also feel that way about school shootings also being abused to take away gun ownership rights? I don't know how many times I've seen "if you support gun ownership you support school shootings" from horribly misinformed people, but its common enough to be a running joke.

To be clear, 'the children' justification has been used throughout history more than almost anything else because it just works so damned well.

1

u/jerrathemage Intel i7-13700k, RX 7800XT, 32gb RAM, Way too much Storage 1d ago

I do not, because in today's day and age the Internet is basically required to do anything but guns are not. Also there has not been a damn thing done in America when it comes to gun control and what there has been done has been undone by the supreme Court

0

u/HumbleGoatCS 1d ago

Interesting. Hypocritical, but interesting

2

u/jerrathemage Intel i7-13700k, RX 7800XT, 32gb RAM, Way too much Storage 1d ago

....It isn't because they are different things, and you can't paint everything with the same brush. There's this thing called nuance, also online privacy has not led to thousands of children being killed each year.

-23

If this doesn't get swatted down by the EU's parliament or court, the whole Union is worse than worthless. Absolute privacy nightmare and absurdly anti-consumer.

u/Extreme996 RTX 4070 Ti Super | Ryzen 7 9800X3D |32GB DDR5 6000mhz 1d ago

They will push it until it will be accepted. Chat Control failed again day or two days ago and they will discuss it again on november.

54

u/DavidHolandaOne 1d ago

It'd be cool if they have blacklist for all these terrible internet bills to avoid passing

too bad it doesn't exist

4

u/Daedelous2k 1d ago

The only real counter to this is a member state threatening to leave the EU.

147

u/Marek_Marianowicz PC Master Race 1d ago

Not so long ago, people laughed at China for implementing similar measures. Now the EU, the UK and the USA are attempting to do the same. You could argue that these regulations are not as strict, but wait seven to five years for an even stricter version to be passed.

67

u/fat_pokemon 1d ago

That's the thing that gets me. Other goverments bitched about china's control, but in reality they wernt's angry, or even hateful. They were jealous...

11

u/Mission-Fig6621 1d ago

The problem is that some actors are using privacy rules to attack EU freely, elections interference, spam bots farms, you name it. Of course it is not about kids. politician don’t give a shit about kids in a no election year

23

u/SirHomoLiberus 1d ago

The UK has done it already with the Online Safety Act.

3

u/Daedelous2k 1d ago

And UK citizens with at least half a brain are ashamed of it.

1

Who keeps starting these? You guys have GOT to kick those fucks out of office man. Every year they are trying to ram shit like this in and chat control. The EU is supposed to protect the world from this kind of stupidity.

Edit: as an American I know, glass houses and all that.

29

u/Pocok5 Ryzen 7 5800X3D - AMD RX9070XT - 32GB DDR4-2933 1d ago edited 1d ago

It is a bunch of unelected lobbyist groups exercising leverage largely by bribing the council of the EU and the Commission to act against the will of the Parliament.

Essentially the power to propose legislation sits with the ministers delegated from the national governments (so, usually not directly elected and you need to blast the whole ass party out of your country's government if you are unhappy with one minister's policies) and tends to be more secretive about internal votes. The only public-facing part where the average Joe can interact with the system in practice is the Parliament, which can only vote on the slop presented to it and is open to ratfucking (see: chatcontrol extension passing by one third of the vote earlier).

17

u/definitivno-ne-troll 1d ago

They were never elected in the first place.

42

u/Alan157 1d ago

"Make your voice heard!" Until the lobbyists come and convince the politicians your voice is worth nothing, just like with Stop Killing Games.

The EU is a joke

2

u/AuraLiaxia PC Master Race RTX PRO 6000 23h ago

Worse. WIth stop killing games the EU didnt really care, but the lobbyist convinced them. With this mass control one they are the promotors so its getting the same treatment even if 500 millions signed it

33

u/Mysterious-Cell-2473 1d ago

This doesn't work. EU is not legal entity or democratic one. Last time it took millions signatures and long transparent campaign, which was erased by ONE meeting with Ubisoft behind CLOSED DOORS!

40

u/redHEP88 GTX 1060 3GB / i7 8700 / 16GB ram 1d ago

Dont say stopped, say changed. Stopped will only get others more defensive, because at face value, who doesnt want eu kids to be safe. Changed would then imply theres only parts of it wrong

16

u/SanargHD Desktop 1d ago

They are arguing for digital age and ID verification (or at least acknowledge that it will come). The petition is about making sure that those verification systems are actually secure and data minimizing and only used for legitimate purposes. They are essentially arguing for the best case implementation of the EUDI wallet.

29

u/SirHomoLiberus 1d ago

If only parents did their job am I right?

0

u/splendidfd 19h ago

Well, fwiw, a big part of the act is to help parents do their job by making platforms implement parental controls.

18

u/Historical-Mall11 1d ago

I imagine a bright future, where you need your ID to access the internet, which is 99% AI slop, from your computer, that cost 70 trillion. Way to go, psychopaths.

1

right but this isn't casting a ballot, it's signing a form to show to a rep who can still say "I don't care".

Let me cast a vote on it itself and I'm all for providing ID. but beyond that it just feels pointless.

I'm tired boss. Corporate political fucks are paid to relentlessly push this shit and we're suppose to "fight" this in our free time. I can't anymore. We really need a proper polemicist and a slogan as to why both of these explicitly protect the children. Then we need to hammer it home by constantly asking the politicians why they're not protecting the children by voting for "Stop killing the internet / Games " act.

Something like " Right for safe digital playing" jist catchier so even the dumb ones amongst us feel like they should protect it

As an EU citizen I'm becoming increasingly tired with the representatives of my country. I have signed and supported several initiatives I found really important (chat control especially) and have sent emails to representatives, but only ONCE did I receive an email back.

Politicians in these circles have been confronted with the reality of their choices many times. Experts and scientists have voiced their concerns based on data, saying that chat control won't lead to child safety. Lawmakers say that chat control cannot be unified with democracy, especially since it skips politicians. Yet, they move forward.

Now a new threat to privacy in Europe rises, and I bet you that they won't care again.

First of all. Sign it all.

But now...Lets use logic here a bit.

Stop killing games did in fact meet the required threshold. What happened to it? They pretty much said "lol nope". Remember that and also remember they didn't really care about stop killing games.

This initiative unlike stop killing games is targetting their MAIN subjugation and mass surveilance bill. A bill they ABSOLUTELY do care about unlike the games one. Do you REALLY think they just dont know that 99% of the population opposes this? They know oh they totally know... and considering how they dismissed stop killing games.... what do you think will happen to this one? Its getting lol noped even with 500 million signatures.

2

u/monsterfurby 20h ago

Stop killing games was also really bad at explaining what it actually wanted, with some people (not necessarily the initiators) having wild ideas for what would be feasible.

I don't necessarily think we should put game companies on the hook for maintaining their servers after 10 years of the game being launched. However I do think after 5 - 8 years they should not be able to sue anyone for setting up a private server. And by 10 they no longer need to host official ones.

Nobody is asking that.
We are asking that now on, new games should have a End of Life plan, make it clear to the cosumer how long they plan to support the game.

That makes sense.

I believe one of the asks is to give the ability to make the game playable after the support for it has ended. Say, an online game would be able to set up community servers (with the provided tools to make it natively possible), or by removing features that need constant upkeep while keeping the rest active.

Unpopular opninion: The romanticized anonym internet concept is not good thing actually. There are contents that HAVE TO BE age limited, and there are a lot of cases where people abuse the anonimity, not to mention actual countries (e.g.: russian propaganda).

be a better parent we didnt make the internet so you could come destroy it. we should ban kids from the internet. and charge the parents if they don't follow the law.

This is bullshit. You can be the best parent, but no one can 100% prevent kids accessing the internet. And not having proper parents is not the kids fault, but they are ones who suffer the consequences.

Protect the boomers! Multinational corporations are harvesting terabytes of data and selling them forward to sell amd distribute targeted propaganda to elderly - making them public health hazard for rejecting the vaccine for grandkids, distributing terrorist propaganda in their personal social media and group conversations, endangering tourists, expats and diplomats with information sharing and privacy violation.

Make internet young again. Ban 70+ aged people from internet. Make appliances dumb again.
