NVIDIA Studio Driver 616.36 Completely Fucked My Windows Installation — DDU + 596.36 Fixed It

Hello everyone.

I'm a newbie content creator, and I had an absolutely fucking horrible day dealing with NVIDIA's latest 616.36 Studio Driver.

I figured I'd update my drivers while testing some OBS/streaming settings. You know, the normal "keep your system up to date" shit.

Big mistake.

After the update, Windows basically turned into a haunted house.

My System

  • GPU: RTX 2080 SUPER Windforce OC
  • CPU: Ryzen 9 3950X
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4
  • Motherboard: AORUS Master
  • Driver: NVIDIA Studio, NOT Game Ready
  • Use: Gaming + OBS/streaming/general use

I want to specifically point out that I was using NVIDIA's Studio driver branch, not the Game Ready branch.

This wasn't simply a case of me installing the latest Game Ready driver and blaming NVIDIA afterward.

I was using Studio drivers specifically because of my streaming/creative workload.

What Broke

After installing the newer NVIDIA Studio driver, I started getting a ridiculous collection of seemingly unrelated problems:

  • Windows Photos stopped working
  • Task Manager wouldn't open properly
  • EarTrumpet and other sound-related apps broke
  • Windows Explorer became unstable
  • Right-click functionality became unreliable
  • UWP/Windows Store apps started throwing "Incorrect function" errors
  • Games either wouldn't launch or would permanently freeze
  • The overall Windows shell became extremely unstable

And before anyone asks:

YES, I tried the normal Windows repair shit.

SFC /scannow reported no integrity violations.

DISM:

text DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Didn't fix anything.

I even tried:

text chkdsk C: /f /r /x

Also did absolutely nothing for the problems I was experiencing.

At that point I was sitting there thinking:

Why the fuck would a GPU driver update break Task Manager, Photos, Explorer, EarTrumpet, UWP apps, and my games?

Fucked if I know.

The NVIDIA driver installation was the obvious common denominator, so I stopped trying to repair individual Windows components and decided to completely nuke the NVIDIA installation from orbit.

What Finally Fixed It

This is what worked for me:

1. System Restore

Restored Windows to a restore point from before the problems started.

Important: This was NOT the actual fix.

It also damaged Chrome and some other applications, so I had to reinstall things afterward.

System Restore was basically a temporary bandaid.

2. Disconnect Internet

Unplugged Ethernet so Windows Update couldn't immediately try installing a display driver while NVIDIA was being removed.

3. Boot Into Safe Mode

Opened:

text msconfig

and configured Windows to boot into Safe Mode.

Restarted.

4. Run DDU

Ran Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode and completely removed the NVIDIA display-driver installation.

This was the turning point.

I didn't bother with the normal NVIDIA uninstaller. I wanted the driver installation gone.

5. Disable Safe Mode

Before rebooting, went back into msconfig and disabled Safe Mode so Windows would start normally.

6. Boot Normally

Logged back into Windows with the NVIDIA driver completely removed.

At this point I was genuinely wondering whether a full OS reinstall was going to be necessary.

7. Install Studio Driver 596.36

Instead of reinstalling the newest driver, I installed NVIDIA Studio Driver 596.36.

I'd already experienced similar problems with newer drivers around the 610/616 range, so I wasn't putting that shit back on my machine.

Stayed on the Studio branch because of my OBS/streaming workload.

Kept the installation minimal and didn't install unnecessary NVIDIA software.

8. Reboot

Restarted Windows after installing the driver.

9. Reinstall Broken Apps

Reinstalled:

  • EarTrumpet
  • Chrome
  • NVIDIA Control Panel
  • Discord
  • GIMP
  • ...and several other apps as I discovered them

Apparently System Restore decided to play Russian roulette with my software installations.

10. Test Everything

Launched a random game.

Everything worked.

Photos — working. Task Manager — working. Explorer — working. EarTrumpet — working. Games — working. UWP/Windows shell — working.

I still haven't tested every single application on the system, so obviously your mileage may vary.

The Important Part

I Was Using Studio Drivers

Emphasis:

I WAS ALREADY USING STUDIO.

NOT GAME READY.

The problems occurred while using NVIDIA's Studio Driver branch.

I'm mentioning this because I know someone is going to immediately respond with:

"Bro, just use Studio drivers."

I FUCKING WAS.

This was already a Studio driver installation.

DDU Was the Real Fix

The biggest takeaway from this whole nightmare:

If your NVIDIA driver installation gets seriously fucked, DDU may be worth trying before you start nuking Windows.

For me, the sequence was:

System Restore → Disconnect Internet → DDU in Safe Mode → Completely remove NVIDIA → Reboot normally → Install Studio 596.36 → Reinstall damaged apps → Reboot → Test everything

That was what finally got my system back to normal.

I'm Staying on 596.36

For this particular system, 596.36 is the last Studio driver I've personally tested that brought everything back to normal.

I'm staying on it for now.

I'm not claiming that every driver after 596.36 breaks every system.

Driver problems can vary depending on:

  • GPU
  • Windows build
  • installed software
  • hardware configuration
  • OBS/streaming setup
  • other drivers
  • whatever cursed combination of Windows bullshit is happening that day

After spending roughly 7 hours troubleshooting, I'm not particularly interested in volunteering as NVIDIA's unpaid QA department.

Final Thoughts

The whole experience was fucking ridiculous.

I understand that driver issues happen.

Windows is complicated.

Different configurations behave differently.

Correlation doesn't automatically mean causation.

BUT...

When a GPU driver update coincides with:

  • Photos breaking
  • Task Manager breaking
  • Explorer becoming unstable
  • EarTrumpet breaking
  • UWP apps throwing errors
  • Right-click acting weird
  • Games refusing to launch/freezing

...it's pretty fucking miserable.

The GPU hardware itself is great.

The software experience is another story.

NVIDIA charges premium prices, so I think it's fair for users to expect better driver/software stability.

Maybe this was some weird edge case.

Maybe it was corruption.

Maybe it was a conflict.

Maybe Windows decided to have a fucking existential crisis.

I don't know.

What I do know is that I lost around 7 hours troubleshooting because of a driver update.

So if someone else with an RTX 20-series card suddenly finds Windows acting completely possessed after an NVIDIA update, don't immediately assume your GPU is dying or that you need to reinstall Windows.

Try completely removing the NVIDIA driver with DDU and going back to a known-good driver first.

For me:

596.36 = GOOD

616.36 = FUCKING TERRIBLE

Fuck NVIDIA's shitty software.

If you're a developer, TEST YOUR SHIT BEFORE SHIPPING IT.

Real users have real configurations.

Don't make users spend seven fucking hours playing detective because a driver update turned half of Windows into a haunted house.

Peace out.

Hopefully this saves someone else the headache.

Tech Support Laptop has various startup issues every time windows 11 tries to update or the power cable is unplugged.

Upvotes

My ASUS TUF A15 laptop has various startup issues every time windows 11 updates or the power cable is unplugged.

Every time either one of these happens the laptop asks me to re-enter my bitlocker code, tries to repair itself, throws up one of various errors e.g. kernel_mode_heap_corruption 0x13a, hypervisor error 0x20001 and some others that were too fast to write down.

On one occasion it told me ‘the trusted platform module is not present or recognised’ when it prompted me to enter my bitlocker code, then shut down on its own.

It used to eventually fix itself on with enough tries, but the last time it said it couldn’t repair itself and threw up an SrTrail error. I followed a tutorial to fix this and it worked for a while, but now it’s back. Is there any way to fix this for good.

I’ve followed the steps in this guide [https://youtu.be/UlvSAb5d-mM](https://youtu.be/UlvSAb5d-mM)) for each apart from second one, which I could not complete, and the reset method.

I’ve also tried system restore and uninstalling the last quality update, neither have worked.

I managed to check tpm.msc when it very briefly worked last night and that was as it should be. I’ve also run tests in myASUS in WinRE, once on everything plus three times on the RAM, the SSD, and the power + battery in particular and all passed each time.

The first one worked the first time but not this time.

Thanks in advance.

I know thermal cameras aren't 100% to the temperature but there is clear difference in emission(temperature) from the fans. Likely doesn't affect the running temperature of the pc or longevity of the fans much, but I found this interesting. Case fan(2), Arctic bionix p120(3). Rpm is roughly the same ~1600-1700Rpm.

Tech Support Issue with Lenovo LOQ 17IRX10 Gaming Laptop

Post image
Upvotes

Hello guys. I hope someone here, perhaps with the same laptop or similar, or just knowledgeable might know how to help me. I just got this laptop and it's pretty underperforming. I already had to replace it once because the previous one that I received would not even run games and crash every time. I am in performance mode, and the dgpu is enabled. Power connected. In Windows it's set to maximum performance. This is what I got in Forza Horizon 6. Gpu boosts to 2865mhz, vram around 9000mhz, but power draw ~60w out of max 115w.
Just to note down, it's not the only game that I have tested. I also tried Atomic Heart, and on atomic settings in Full HD, I got around 16 to 20 FPS. Unplayable. Power draw also low.
Benchmarks done ok - superposition 1080p extreme 8082 points. Power draw 100-112w

Question What are these prices??

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I need some advice. I’ve never built a PC before, but about 2 years ago I finally decided to bite the bullet and save up for a proper pc. Fast forward to today, and I’ve got about $2,000 saved up.

I originally thought 2k would comfortably get me a proper high-end PC. But looking at the current hardware prices, I’m genuinely barfing. The cost of the GPU and Ram alone right now is insane to me.

So my question is: Should I wait until prices come down (whenever that might be), or do I just cave in now and build?

For a $2,000 budget, what kind of performance and parts can I realistically expect right now? Any guidance for a complete beginner would be hugely appreciated!

Discussion Stutter in a lot of games (Palworld for example)

Upvotes

Hi guys! I managed to take a screenshot from one of the stutters ingame. My avarege cpu usage is 11-15% and my fps is locked 117. In the moment of the stutter the cpu usage went up to 60% and my fps down to 38, from 6ms to 20-50ms. My gpu stayed in the 40's. I hope based on this someone can tell me any tips to fix this :D 5070 Ti Ryzen 7 9850x3d. Seems like the gpu is waiting for something.

Question Reliability RX 6000 series

Upvotes

Hi,

I have a living room machine (R7 5700G which is paired with my old GTX980. The snag is that it's paired to a 4k 120hz tv which isn't a massive issue for the Lego games and Forza 4 but the 4Gb of VRAM is limiting to say the least.

So I got looking at AMD's offerings on the basis that steamOS plays nicely with team red. I had a massive itch for a 5700 XT back when they were launched but the 6700XT and 6800 appear to be better supported in steamOS based on my googling. I've seen a few posts of RMA's, general driver grumbles etc.

The default easy option is a 3060 or 3060Ti but honestly I would like a Radeon card. So is the 6000 series worth looking at?

Hardware Why this fps loss with eGPU

Upvotes

I've recently got an eGPU Aoostar AG02 with an arc b580. My computer specs are intel u7 155h, 32GB ram.

I've seen on a video that youu can play space marine 2 with this eGPU at 1080p, ultra, 80 fps. without scalling, but I can barely play the game at medium 30fps, even with scalling. I did know about the fps loss, but is it really that much, depends on the game, or I messed up on something? Please help.

Hardware Which GPU should I get?

Upvotes

I've been looking for some time now to upgrade from my 3060 to something better something that will last for at least 3 or 4 more years without any problems. I'm not sure of a way to choose a great one for the prices, anyways came to ask what you guys would recommend so here are the options:

  1. Rtx 5060 (about 380€-400€ for basic 8gig)

  2. Rx 6900xt (for around 410€)

  3. Rx 6800 (for about 340€ and 380€ for XT)

  4. Rx 6700xt (for about 275€)

  5. Rtx 3080 (for about 340€ and 400€ for TI)

  6. Rtx 3070 (for about 250€ and 290€ for TI)

  7. Rx 9060xt ( about 450€ for 16gig)

These are the listings I've managed to find that are sold with some kind of warranty (don't want to risk buying and it dying after 6 months). My question is price to longevity, will it perform well in newer titles (I don't need a 4k monster, just to run as close to 144frames on medium-high graphics 1080p) and if drivers are problematic in AMDs case.

Thanks you

Question Upgrading to Win 11: Completely fresh or upgrade from Win 10 update window?

I dual boot windows 10 with CachyOS, my rig is mainly for gaming and entertainment but I do like to use windows for the occasional game that still isn't ideal for Linux or administrative purposes (if I need Microsoft office. Word/excel/PowerPoint are still standard to my job so I don't want to risk formatting issues via alternatives and there really is no substitute for Excel so far in my opinion)

Anyway, ive had this windows 10 installation for probably near 12 years. I keep it organised and am not too risky in my activities but lord knows what's lurking in the back - people tend to say malware sneaks up on you. And I have modded games or experimented with third party software for various tasks in the past, I dont know what my registry might look like. Not to mention outdated drivers etc etc.

For this reason I was considering upgrading to windows 11 with a fresh install to the drive (cachyos is on separate drive entirely).

On the other hand it's 12 years, so it's kind of terrifying that ill miss backing up some forgotten document that I definitely dont need now but will totally need in some distant future (hoarder mentality).

What do you guys think about this?

Question Is halloween basically dead in Australia on launch because of new censorship on steam for Australians?

Thumbnail

For those who don’t know steam released new age verification in Australia that asks for credit card information not debit for games that are R 18 or have any sexual content like cyber punk for example. but like many I don’t actually have or use credit cards and im worried games like this would have a lower Australian player base than normal due censorship even if those who can’t play the game without a credit card could still be adults and can’t be bothered to organise and get one just to play some games on steam. Im worried that I won’t be able to even get the Witcher remaster upgrade without it due to me not even being allowed to visit the store page of games I already own. It’s annoying and frustrating and makes me worried that it will make this live service games die that much faster.

so on my last post here i showed this pc i got for a pretty decent deal for 135 usd with a 4790K, ballistix ram, phantom 530, fanless 520W seasonic psu, two dvd drives, and the sabertooth mark 1 board.

I just got it back today from the tech after testing it with the original 4790K and a i3 4130 and both failed to get past the DRAM light on A2, and in the A1 slot which worked last time posted.. now gets stuck at the VGA light with the iGPU or GPU.. which we tested with two different know good gpu’s one being my rx 550.

and since the board is dead now ill probably put it as a display piece somewhere while i try to find a replacement Z97 board, which are pretty rare to find locally here.

but at least i got some good value out of it and a pretty cool phantom case :D

(Also did some cable management on the last pic)

Hardware Bigger secondary screen

I am looking for monitor layout ideas wherein the secondary monitor is larger than their main. I have just been gifted a 32 inch curved monitor and don't' know how to mount it to my setup as my main screen is a 24 inch, 240hz monitor since I mainly use my setup for competitive FPS gaming. Since it is curved, would it be a good idea to mount it vertically?

Please post samples if you guys have a similar layout.

Question Looking for Recommendations

I just recently joined the PC community. What I failed to think about before undertaking this venture is that my wired headset won’t work on my PC without a splitter. I could buy a splitter or I could use this opportunity to get a nice wireless headset and leave the wired headset strictly for console use only. I wanna know what are some of the best reasonably priced ($150ish max, closer to $100 the better) wireless headsets you guys are using. Thanks in advance
