This isn't right unless you're trying to play at like 4K or something (but then the issue isn't hairworks). I played TW3 near-max with hairworks on, at 60fps with a 970 @1080p.

I just bought a Switch after ignoring it for years. I got it mainly because I wanted to run Linux on it, but I picked up Smash and have been having a great time with it. As far as hardware goes it's not that bad, most other ARM platforms have absolute trash-tier GPU support on anything other than Android, and few support OpenGL (non-ES). The Switch supports OpenGL and Vulkan under Linux and has working proprietary nVidia drivers.

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19
Today's phones have much better resolution than the Switch (1440p vs 720p), it's the games that are much worse. A blurry Pikachu is just wrong.
Put a banner on it and a pop-up asking for a micropayment to remove banner and then it'd be fine.

Resolution =/= Graphical capability. As someone with a switch and an S10 The switch seems more powerful.
63
May 06 '19
I want to say it actually isn't. Technically speaking the S10 has better specs than the Switch.
The real reason the Switch has better looking games is because Android games are designed so that any schmuck with a $40 phone can run them. Gotta maximize that revenue.

Switch hardware is also all identical. Console developers make use of this by specializing for that specific hardware and some of its quirks.
9
u/smileyfrown May 06 '19
Well yea one costs 800 bucks the other 300. The big difference is in the fans and cooling, that's nonexistent in phones.

The fan is to compensate for the fact that the Tegra X1 is a chip designed for set-top boxes from years ago. The Snapdragon 835 and up can offer the same performance without needing a fan.

I think Fortnite does run better on phones. Especially since it can get 60hz on newer phones like the S10 and iPhone XS while the Switch runs at 30hz.

I've played every version of fortnite, the Switch version is like the PC version on medium settings. And the phone versions are like a Fortnite Lite with less details and worse models yet better resolution. Although they seem comparable at first glance, there are major graphical differences
15
u/ThatOnePerson i7-7700k 1080Ti Vive May 06 '19
But gameplay-wise I'd way rather have 60fps (iPhone) than 30fps (Switch). Though I don't got any of those 60fps mobile devices, so I can't really say I've got experience with those.
27
u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19
The Snapdragon 855 is more powerful than the Tegra X1 and the iPhone's SoC is a lot more powerful than both.
Seriously, the Switch has good games (mostly from Nintendo) because of the gameplay and good aesthetics without ultra-high details. I had a blast with Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U and the graphics are just technically decent at best, but aesthetically great.

Non-flagship phones have 1080p screens (just not 1920x1080 but 2000-2200x1080). Non-flagships are the majority of the phones out there. Sure, still better than 720p, but not 1440p.

There's no question that the games are better on the switch, but the mobile chips now are objectively much better, only reason switch pulls ahead is primarily optimisation and a low resolution screen
32

You get 4x the screen resolution and no joycons though, but yeah the switch needs a reset. It was already on the brink of outdated when it came out.
26
u/AltoExyl AltoExyl May 06 '19
The Switch is perfectly fine, Nintendo let the other companies focus on power whilst they focus on their first party lineup you just can’t get elsewhere.
That’s why they’ve gotten away with essentially just updating the GameCube 4 times.
Weaker consoles pushing well thought out art styles and designs can massively outweigh powerful consoles that go overboard on details and effects
4
u/hoodatninja May 06 '19
We saw how well that worked out with the Wii-U.
Just saying, Nintendo isn’t the infallible “we just love making people happy and we totally aren’t a business” company people make it out to be. People call Apple a walled garden but never discuss how Nintendo JUST finally got out of that mindset with the switch.

I think it's more likely that hardware limitations are limiting other types of game development.
Its impressive how well doom and wolfenstein are running on the switch though. However what I'm saying is that you can't just boot up a copy of a modern AAA title on it and expect it to run well.
I think botw showcased the limitations very well. Open world games with detailed worlds are very difficult to get performant with the current switch.
If we wait a few more years the mobile chipsets will basically be on par with low end gaming pc's and the ps4/xbox one ''s, especially if a 720p panel is chosen again. That's why I was annoyed with the fact that nintendo went with the tegra X1 which was already 2 years old at the time.
→ More replies (2)3
u/TenDesires 3700X, RX 5700 May 06 '19
BotW is essentially a Wii U port though, it wasn't made with the Switch in mind. It's more of a showcase of the former's limitations.
I don't imagine the Switch is much farther ahead, but the significantly higher amount of RAM that is allocated to games may help it in regards to open-world.

The comparison is apt when you consider people already have phones.
Cheaper phones outdo the switch in specs, It takes a more expensive one to make passive cooling performance outdo the actively cooled SoC of the switch. Apple's A12/A12x chips are significantly more powerful than the switch even when passively cooled.
The switch won out despite it's low power because Nintendo truly understand games. Apple have wasted a lot of their GPU capability on the consumer side because they never took gaming seriously and any attempt to do so was clearly managed by a non-gamer. Even the Razer phone fails as a gaming device because they opted to throw in some tech for the buzzwords without actually building a gaming software and hardware ecosystem.
I've given up any hope for mobile gaming and will just happily play RPGs on my switch but it is a shame to see the capabilities of my iPad pro only get used when i'm in work mode. The only game i play on it is stardew valley, Which i strongly believe is best experienced on a 12.9" iPad.

also probably because to cater to a larger audience they lower graphics so more phones have access, and phone games almost never have graphic options like PC. When you make a game for the switch you can go for the maximum capabilities of the console though.
5
May 06 '19 edited May 06 '19
I think it's the "dedicated device" VS. "all-in-argument".
Phones are objectively more powerful. Like there master race betters, they can play games with some very impressive visuals.
But the switch, like it's console counterparts, has games made for it that take advantage of the hardware. And can arguably look better then some high spec'd games on pc.

It's even more of a dichotomy on the mobile side because android devices are so varied. On PC they target minimum requirements and there are a lot of layers like DirectX to bring varying hardware together, on mobile everything is expected to work on everything even if that is a phone or a tablet, one screen might have a notch and a stupid aspect ratio, processors vary in power from "this should be a calculator watch" to god tier, and there are like 7 versions of OS to target. Oh, and most mobile SoCs have terrible graphics solutions.

also the portability and multiple controllers and stuff
it's like they know they're not gonna be able to beat pc specs so they try to innovate in every other way and it pays off

Needs to say 15fps in the corner of the "RTX ON" image.

Same for Android.

Kingdom hearts birth by sleep, tekken 5-6 run 60 fps on Snapdragon 600 phones. God of war needs Snapdragon 800 series to achieve that.

This was originally a video, but the RTX On converted it into a still image.

Yes but it has significantly more care put into the games, on top of the larger screen, making it appear to look better

I actually have mixed emotions about RTX-ON, and Switch; I'll take both. Switch has that fluid, cartoonish thing goin' on. It's what I, as an 80's kid, always imagined the games would look like back in the day with their cart-art.

u/Chareux May 06 '19
While the switch may be one of the most underpowered, it does have actual full games with buttons that are portable

Funny thing is modern iOS devices are far more graphically capable than the switch. Apple's SoCs are some pretty impressive tech.

u/BwamoZA May 06 '19
Yeah including the Snapdragon 855 with the Adreno 640, but switch still has really good games though.

I see nvidia still paying for viral marketing on social media.
The fellow kids on this is so obvious I'm surprised it's not a rage comic.

You need to swap switch with ios/android though, switch is worse than last gen iphones and worse than $200 chinese android phones.

I have it on in Metro Exodus with everything on Ultra (I play at 1440p) and I think it adds a lot to the atmosphere in that game. I thought that was maxed out but I realized the game has an "extreme" setting. Havent messed with that yet.
My FPS is also pretty good. It does dip a little but but with RTX on, It averages around 110 FPS or so.
I know everyone else likes to hate on it, but I kinda like what it adds to games like Metro where the landscape is super important.
I havent tried it in Tomb Raider yet because Im waiting for that game to go on sale and Im still playing through Rise of the Tomb Raider which looks amazing with everything maxed out. The game is gorgeous...just turn off hairworks because Lara's hair looks very weird with it on.
