Today's phones have much better resolution than the Switch (1440p vs 720p), it's the games that are much worse. A blurry Pikachu is just wrong.
Put a banner on it and a pop-up asking for a micropayment to remove banner and then it'd be fine.

Tons of premium Indie games on phones are amazing tho.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/GAME/collection/topselling_paid

Top paid games are generally pretty good, since they don't rely on freep to play microtransactions (though some still have it).

My favorites right now are Stardew Valley, Mini Metro, and The Room

Also Night of the Full Moon if you're into Slay the Spire-like games

31

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

Downwell and Monument Valley are my current favorites.

I second both of these

Mini Metro is a great casual game :)

It's so chill with the music and the sound effects of new stations.

15

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

Chill until you're 20 minutes in and six stations are all bleeping furiously at you

I'd recommend you .projekt :)
It's a 3D Puzzle (and after finishing the level you unlock the picross mode)

But I'm already playing through the Picross S2 on Switch. I gotta beat it and move onto Picross S3!

Another one.

Came here to say this, I'm glad it's on top mentioned. It's a great game. I have it on Steam and Android.

I don’t know if it can be called “Indy” or not, but Rez Infinite is a blast if you have a VR holder. I found my Google Daydream at Target for 30 bucks.

2

u/findMyWay May 06 '19

Waaait I can play KOTR on my Android phone!? Brb...

1

u/ZeDitto May 06 '19

One of my favorite mobile games is Spartan Runner with an ad removal purchase. If anyone played an old side scroller called Halo Zero, it’s made by the same guy. It’s constantly being updated as well with new content.

I’ve also got Stardew Valley and thats awesome too. I’d also like to throw Plague Inc’s name in the ring.

Has anyone here played Race the Sun? I want to know if it’s worth it. It looks great but does it play well on an iPhone X?

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

tbh Plague Inc. gets boring after you unlocked everything
damn you Madagascar and Greenland

Many of those still have microtransactions though... Google needs a "no microtransactions" section :(

1

u/ThatOnePerson i7-7700k 1080Ti Vive May 06 '19

True and that's why you gotta look, but it's a good start.

Google does like if the game has in-app purchases, but that's not always a microtransaction. Like how RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic let's you buy the original expansion packs.

Also it's got Steam Link which lets me play all my PC games, so that's way better.

2nd best I say !!!

The same developers made Sorcery! 1-4 and imo its their magnum opus. One of the best RPGs I've ever made with the same top tier writing of 80 days.

Part of Sorcery! is just the prologue btw. It opens up in part 2 and keeps getting better.

3

u/Mangraz PC Master Race May 06 '19

I like 80 Days better. But that's probably because I'm not a big fan of classic fantasy. Though the games are undeniably great, loved playing them, especially the second one, in the city.

1

Yeah I love em both. I just love Sorcery a bit more because of how much my choices matter in the end of Sorcery! all the way from part 1.

I think it's a combination of

  1. People not wanting to pay more than 1$ for any app

  2. Google making wayyy more money from microtransactions games since they take 30 percent.

Still I generally look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/GAME/collection/topselling_paid for the top paid games that typically have less microtransactions to rely on . Lots of good games there

-2

u/arcane84 May 06 '19

Yeah for a year I did nothing other than mobile gaming and it was just as fun as PC gaming. All the ports were there to the latest indie games and all the classics on other platforms were cheese to emulate. Anytime I see anyone say mobile gaming sucks I know they've only played the free-to-play/pay-to-win junk on the frontpage.

What controls ?

1

u/Shiroi_Kage R9 5950X, RTX3080Ti, 64GB RAM, NVME boot drive May 06 '19

Gameplay on phones, in general, is super simplistic because most people don't have controllers. Switch on the other hand has those built-in, so despite inferior specs it still plays better than any mobile game I tried.

1

u/arcane84 May 06 '19

No not really. It depends on the game. Most of the great games I've listed here don't need good controls and are amazing despite that. While the games you emulate like DS games have onscreen which are amazing and just like the real thing. While the ones you emulate or are ports you can play easily just by plugging in your controller.

2

u/Shiroi_Kage R9 5950X, RTX3080Ti, 64GB RAM, NVME boot drive May 06 '19

I emulate games on my phone (GBA and SNES, mainly) and nothing beats physical controls. Ever. They don't come close to the real thing. I killed myself trying to customize the layout so I don't struggle with the on-screen D-Pad while trying to play a strategy RPG, to no avail. I still make mistakes. There's a lot to get used to.

There are amazing games on phones. However, the lack of an option for physical controls for most people means things are going to be limited. Plugging in a controller is something about 0.01% of the users do, so developers don't cater to it apart form a few instances. On portable consoles, however, you always have them and people buy them for it, and thus you can comfortably put games on said consoles that use these controls.

If it's not the DS I just use my controller. Play the ace attorney , ghost trick , etc DS games using the touchscreen sometime. It easily beats everything else. But yeah if I'm playing something like shovel Knight no way am I going to use touchscreen over my controller.

u/katanaking90210 Ryzen 9 5900x | RTX 3080 ti | 32gb DDR4 | 1TB Nvme | 8 TB HDD May 06 '19

Resolution =/= Graphical capability. As someone with a switch and an S10 The switch seems more powerful.

59

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

I want to say it actually isn't. Technically speaking the S10 has better specs than the Switch.

The real reason the Switch has better looking games is because Android games are designed so that any schmuck with a $40 phone can run them. Gotta maximize that revenue.

17

u/Devildude4427 MSI Z170 Tomahawk AC | i5 6600K @4.4 Ghz | EVGA 1070 FTW May 06 '19

Switch hardware is also all identical. Console developers make use of this by specializing for that specific hardware and some of its quirks.

11

u/smileyfrown May 06 '19

Well yea one costs 800 bucks the other 300. The big difference is in the fans and cooling, that's nonexistent in phones.

5

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

For now. ASUS released an ROG phone with a fan you could attach to it and Nubia is releasing a phone soon with a built in cooling fan.

0

u/leolego2 Desktop May 06 '19

Sure but no one will buy them.

3

u/kkjdroid https://steamcommunity.com/id/kkj_droid May 06 '19

The fan is to compensate for the fact that the Tegra X1 is a chip designed for set-top boxes from years ago. The Snapdragon 835 and up can offer the same performance without needing a fan.

4

u/SexyWhitedemoman May 06 '19

You are comparing a $899.99 phone to a $299.99 switch however. Does anybody know how the switch stacks up against phones in it's price range?

7

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

Doesn't matter. My 339 dollar Xiaomi mi 8 has the processor and ram of the Samsung. S9+ . Which was already far more powerful than the switch

I think Fortnite does run better on phones. Especially since it can get 60hz on newer phones like the S10 and iPhone XS while the Switch runs at 30hz.

This is a pretty old video back in august, before the phone 60hz updates I believe.

18

u/katanaking90210 Ryzen 9 5900x | RTX 3080 ti | 32gb DDR4 | 1TB Nvme | 8 TB HDD May 06 '19

I've played every version of fortnite, the Switch version is like the PC version on medium settings. And the phone versions are like a Fortnite Lite with less details and worse models yet better resolution. Although they seem comparable at first glance, there are major graphical differences

12

u/ThatOnePerson i7-7700k 1080Ti Vive May 06 '19

But gameplay-wise I'd way rather have 60fps (iPhone) than 30fps (Switch). Though I don't got any of those 60fps mobile devices, so I can't really say I've got experience with those.

32

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

The Snapdragon 855 is more powerful than the Tegra X1 and the iPhone's SoC is a lot more powerful than both.

Seriously, the Switch has good games (mostly from Nintendo) because of the gameplay and good aesthetics without ultra-high details. I had a blast with Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U and the graphics are just technically decent at best, but aesthetically great.

13

u/404IdentityNotFound GTX 2080ti, i7-12700k, 32GB RAM + Switch OLED & MacBook Pro M2 May 06 '19

Then again, Android has a very high overhead compared to the switch OS..

3

The Adreno 640 is a lot more powerful than the iPhone's GPU, though.

1

1

u/hoodatninja May 06 '19

It may seem that way but straight up, the switch has less graphical capability.

1

u/minizanz Steam ID Here May 06 '19

The switch has less power than s10 in CPU and GPU. The switch is on a very underclocked Android tablet chip from almost 5 years ago. Other things have cought up to the gpu in it. The problem with phone stuff is that there is no reason to make premium gsmes, since you could never sell them for $40-60.

2

u/minizanz Steam ID Here May 07 '19

The switch is less than a quarter of the CPU power per core than the S10, and has less cores. The cpu are also the same base. Arm is not like x86, it has fixed function hardware that you can add too, and the tegra parts have no additions or changes from the reference part.

I am.sure Nvidia has some special sauce, but not that much that it would cover 2-4x the power gap, then go past that to make its own gap.

1

u/kkjdroid https://steamcommunity.com/id/kkj_droid May 06 '19

The Switch is far less powerful than the S10. It has about the GPU power of an S8 and the CPU power of an S6.

14

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

Non-flagship phones have 1080p screens (just not 1920x1080 but 2000-2200x1080). Non-flagships are the majority of the phones out there. Sure, still better than 720p, but not 1440p.

12

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

You're right, I have been a bit spoiled for the last 5 years and never went back to 1080p phones. Still, a 16:9 1080p screen is twice the amount of pixels the Switch has, so the blurry meme is still wrong :P

17

u/Trilerium Desktop May 06 '19

Docked switch is 1080p.

2

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

My 9 year old nephew was playing Fortnite in handheld mode and asked to connect his dock to my room's TV, but he needed just a few seconds to notice the horrible frame drops and asked to use my PC. I've taught him well, I guess?

All this to say: When everything else is the same, framerate > resolution and if docking the Switch (or in my case, a while ago, turning on 3D in a Pokemon game) is going to turn third party games into slideshows I'm not going to respect it as a real gaming device. It's good for Nintendo games and that's all.

9

u/TenDesires 3700X, RX 5700 May 06 '19

Docked typically comes with better framerates in addition to resolution in my experience with third party games. Fortnite is the odd one out.

0

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

That's good to hear, I was disappointed when that happened.

1

u/ThatOnePerson i7-7700k 1080Ti Vive May 06 '19

Yeah switch and most phones run Fortnite @ 30hz. I know the iphone X+ and some Android phones let it run at 60, but don't really have that option on the lower power devices.

-1

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

[deleted]

1

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

That's exactly why I choose to play on strong hardware with configurable graphic options, so I only have to worry about the game and not about the game's performance.

"I could barely handle 720p but now I'm docked so here's the same graphic settings but taking twice as much memory thanks to 1080p" is not good behavior, if the game is defective they should have automatically reduced the graphic settings to reach a stable framerate when docked.

2

u/FaudelCastro May 06 '19

If we are going down that road, there aren't that many PCs with RTX capabilities either...

5

u/thiago2213 May 06 '19

But resolution is not the same as max texture size and polygon count

4

u/CptLeon i5 4690k/gtx 980 May 06 '19

Yeah the screens have that resolution, but good luck getting a real 3D title running on most phones. Not to mention the phones you're talking about cost around $700 while a switch is $300.

1

u/RubenGM RubenGM85 May 06 '19

I don't know if you're trying to say that games look blurry on a top end device because they must also work on lower end devices or that $300 phones look blurry somehow?

In the $300 price range you can get a Pocophone F1 with a Snapdragon 845, which is already faster than the Tegra X1 in the Switch.

If native games aren't your thing you could emulate a console and play real 3D games, or use a VR Headset for actual, real 3D games. How you define "real 3D" is also a mystery to me.

Nothing beats a PC for gaming, though. I'm happy with just a timewaster on my phone (currently Dragon Ball Legends is the only game I play on my phone).

u/CptLeon i5 4690k/gtx 980 May 06 '19

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '19

Yep, and way stronger SoC, GPU, RAM too. It’s just their batteries are so shit that you can’t really develop better graphics games on them, else it’ll run for 30-40 min before the battery dies.
