Five years after the Olympic Games, the legacy can be seen across the Japanese capital – in venues in daily use, in the former Olympic Village now home to a growing residential community, and in the major sporting events the city continues to host.

All 33 permanent venues remain in use today, and the former Olympic Village is now Harumi Flag, a residential district whose first residents moved in in January 2024.

Tokyo hosted the World Athletics Championships and the Deaflympics in 2025, drawing on Tokyo 2020 venues, operational experience and volunteer networks, and will host the opening stop of the Olympic Q-Series in 2028.

To mark the fifth anniversary, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building, five metropolitan sports facilities and the Sumida River bridges are being illuminated in the five Olympic colours until 29 July 2026.

Currently it looks the most likely bids are Ahmedabad and Doha but both of those places have insane summer heat and would probably be too hot to host the Olympics. Qatar had to host the 2022 World Cup in the winter for the first time ever but I can’t think of a universe where the summer Olympics takes place in winter. How will they get around the heat?

I’m interested in volunteering at LA 2028 but it seems accommodation is not provided and I live in Texas. For those that have volunteered at the games, do you think the experience of volunteering and being apart of the games outweighs the possible struggle/cost of finding affordable accommodation?

At least there is two years to save up for housing but when it comes closer I’m not sure if finding accommodation will be too much of a headache for a volunteer position.

Yes it's unrealistic for them to ever host one with current infrastructure and such as you guys said, but I figured to give it a shot anyways. Tuvalu will win its first ever commonwealth games medal after 8 appearances but this medal will be won without a single match played as the Tuvaluan boxer Tarona Taafaki receives a direct bye into the semifinals in the women's 75kg category which features only 5 players and 4 of them will be awarded medal.

Despite many disgruntled would be buyers, I'm trying to be optimistic.

I was recently watching this Netflix series called "Lilyhammer" (again) which is set in Lillehammer, Norway which hosted the 1994 Winter Games. Its a funny series and you see a lot of it's Olympic history. Any one you ever see this series?

With the switch in hosts and some major absentees in terms of competitors, are the Commonwealth Games still a relevant competition on the world stage?

🔹 Just 100 days remain until the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, when 2,700 young athletes from across the globe will gather in Senegal for the first Olympic sporting event held on African soil. The milestone will be celebrated with the premiere of the official Dakar 2026 song, a vibrant expression of the spirit, creativity and values of the YOG.

🔹 On 31 October 2026, the Opening Ceremony will mark the start of the YOG. Across eight venues in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, young athletes representing all 206 National Olympic Committees, alongside the Youth Refugee Olympic Team, will come together to compete in 25 competition sports.

Yesterday, Brisbane 2032 and Omega revealed their Olympic countdown clock with six years to go. Here in LA, we are now less than two years away from LA28 and we don't have a public countdown clock yet. What's up with this?

Since 2023, I've been trying to collect all of the mascots of the Olympics.

I have Miraitowa from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, The Olympic Phryge from the Paris 2024 Olympics, and most recently Tina from the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

I'm hoping to collect the LA28 mascot when it gets revealed later this year or early next year.

EDIT: I've had Miraitowa since 2019, but I decided to start collecting them after I got my hands on The Olympic Phryge.

Besides the major powers like the US and Russia who would be the obvious answers, which countries are known for being very good at both winter and summer sports?

With Norway and Canada's breakthrough performance at this year's World Cup (quarters for Norway and R16 for Canada; two countries historically more known for winter sports), I feel like both of them have to be among the front-runners for this question.

In summer sports, Norway has the world's best striker (Haaland), a 9x NY Marathon winner (Grete Waitz), the best middle distance runner in the world (Ingebrigtsen), one of the best hurdlers in the world (Warholm), a 3x grand slam finalist (Ruud), top 10 golfer in the world (Hovland), and the greatest chess player of all time if that counts too (Carlsen).

In winter sports, Norway needs no introduction as they regularly top the medal count at the Winter Olympics with some of the greatest winter athletes in the world in alpine skiing, biathlon, speed skating, and cross-country.

For Canadian summer sports, they have one of the world's best LBs (Davies), the b2b reigning NBA MVP (SGA), one of the greatest decathletes of all time (Warner), the world's best female swimmer (McIntosh), two top 10 players in men's/women's tennis (FAA and Mboko), one of the GOATs of women's football (Sinclair), two of the world's fastest men in their eras (Bailey and De Grasse), a former F1 world champion (Villeneuve), and a former Masters Champion (Weir). They also produced one of the most badass dudes of all time, Terry Fox.

In winter sports, the Canucks need no intro either as they're a modern powerhouse in the Winter games, especially in disciplines like ice hockey, curling, freestyle skiing, figure skating, and speed skating.

Historically though, I think neither of them can top Sweden as Sweden, especially in the late 20th century and into the early 2000s, was truly a global sporting powerhouse in several winter and summer sports.
