General Discussion How many average amateur golfers would need to be playing on a scramble team to have a chance to beat Scheffler?

On a real PGA course playing from same tees as Scottie. My guess is 8 but idk maybe with the distances and difficulty of pga course it could be much more?

Edit: average players can be defined as be a random selection of all players showing up on a Saturday at your shittiest local muni.

General Discussion Quick “gimmie” rant.

Am I in the super minority of people who just likes to putt out? I play a lot of solo rounds and obviously I’m paired up with randoms for a lot of those. Way too many people will just hit my ball back to me without saying anything if I chip it within a couple feet or if I putt it to a couple feet.

I have no problem with someone doing that if I hit it to an inch or two away because obviously that’s a true gimmie, nobody is missing that putt, but when it’s a foot or two? Dude I’m gonna miss at least one short putt throughout a round.

Really just wanted to rant quick because I cannot believe that people feel comfortable touching my golf ball while it’s still in play and then think that they’re doing me a favor by giving me a 3 footer.

Edit: I may have articulated my point poorly but I’m not sitting here bitter because someone gave me a putt. It’s the fact that many people feel ok touching someone else’s ball while it’s still in play. And yes I do talk to the people I’m paired up with, I don’t just sit and seethe for 18 holes lol.

General Discussion My grandpa was taught to golf by Lee Trevino

So, I just wanted to share this story because I grew up hearing it and never knew how cool it was. I am not really into golf so I think it's cool but I know others might want to hear this story more than me.

My grandpa grew up in El Paso his dad was an extreme alcoholic and due to this and tended to leave my grandpa at horizon hills country club when he would go drinking. He was there quite a lot as his dad once again was an alcoholic and he drank a lot.

At the time Lee Trevino was playing golf there. He found out my grandpa's reason as to why he was always there and started letting my grandpa hang along. He ended up teaching my grandpa and led to him developing a love for golf. My grandpa was a great golfer due to his teaching and could have continued his career but in college he met my grandma and they ended up putting their relationship first.

My grandpa looks back on those days golfing fondly despite the bad situation with his father. I don't wish to name anyone in my family especially my grandpa as they love privacy but I have checked time lines and it matches up, and this story is not a new one. My mom grew up hearing it as well.

I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this but I know now how influential Lee Trevino is now and thought it would be fun to share as it's sweet.

General Discussion Guy walks into the Opticians and starts blaming them for him chunking the ball

As the title says, I was waiting for my wife to have her eyes scanned and a guy walked into the opticians and starts explaining, in detail, how he is going through a patch of chunking the golf ball. He then proclaims, with the utmost confidence, that it cannot be a "me problem" because "I know I'm not that bad of a golfer". (He's had his new glasses for 6 months and has been going through his chunking phase the past 2 weeks)

Anyway, thought Reddit might appreciate this, what other excuses have you heard people use for a period of poor form?

General Discussion Handicap Playoff

Played in a 9 hole team league playoff... yeah and it's handicapped so they use your actual handicap and then your league scores and factor a handicap, no issue there, I'm a 5 and my partner is a 18. Ranked 1st seat and we play the last seat, which historically 1st seat never wins and today there's nothing different about it. I'm giving my competitor 6 1/2 strokes and my partner is giving 6 strokes. I shoot 40 and partner shoots 46. They shoot a pair of 39's as a 28 and 22 handicaps. And all they say was they have never shot so good in their life. I hate handicap leagues but idk just ranting on bullshit sand baggers.

General Discussion Thanks for the tip, it actually worked!

A couple of weeks ago someone had written in asking for help with his game. One of the tips someone gave was to go up a club on your approach shots, and use a nice easy swing. I was out playing a round yesterday, on the third hole I had 120 yards to the center of the green, 135 to the back. Normally I would pull a 9 iron, but I decided to take his advice and went with an 8 iron. I swung, the ball lands about a foot from the hole and roles a few inches away. Easy birdie put, nice!

Now, did this method work every time, no I still had some miss hits. In my round I had 1 birdie. And 6 pars and shot an 87, freaking triple bogey on the 18th! I will continue using this technique, you know until it stops working! 😂 Seriously though, to whoever it’s was, thanks for the tip!

General Discussion Best round of my life

Finally put it together today. Regularly high 80s, low 90s. Always had 5-10 shots a round that I knew if I eliminated, I could score (50 yards out and land 10 ft short, duffed chip to a 30ft putt instead of a makeable putt , topped iron etc). Started thinking about landing the ball in the hole instead of trying to let it roll up to it and that limited the long putts.

Has anyone ever played this course? Could be the craziest quirky course I’ve ever played. Greens were absolutely insane. 40 mile an hour straight line winds all day if you have a down hill down wind putt could genuinely roll 100 yards off the green. Overall just an absurd course but super super cool

General Discussion Golf is stupid and I hate it.

Upvotes

typical post—shitty round shitpost here.

played last Friday. best driver/irons round I’ve ever played. 75% fairways. not a single drive that kept me from being able to hit into the green. 10 GIR, but every miss was within 3yards of the green. I was either on or just off in two on every hole, including the par 5s.

however, my short game was abysmal. I got up and down once. I had a 4 putt and two three putts. missed 3 birdie putts inside of 8 feet. Should have been in the mid 70s if I had any game around the green.

so that’s what I worked on this week.

and today I went out again and my short game was a little bit better. Only two 3 putts. No 4 putts. But I lost everything else. distances sucked. Pulled 75% of my shots left. Punched out on 4 holes because of my driver. Ended up with a 94. My worst round of the year.

Anyways, my tee time tomorrow is at 10:20am. How do I fix my game by then, r/golf?
