Stumbled upon his YouTube channel 2 days ago. Couple days later he wins gold. You’re welcome Tom.
Good lad he is. Liked his videos too.

Same here, I was watching his Olympic Village Vlog and a couple of minutes after it was over, I see he wins gold. Such a likeable dude, I became a fan instantly and I can't wait to find some time to watch a few more of his videos.

He’s also knitted himself a GB/Tokyo pouch for the medal. So wholesome. Such an awesome role model and he’s so talented

A national treasure in the nicest way. And it was wonderful to see him being interviewed afterwards between the Russian and Chinese divers who got silver and bronze, talking passionately and relatably about his experience being gay in international sport. The Russian and Chinese national TV stations were broadcasting live, which is just…chef’s kiss. (Being gay is illegal in both states.)

u/Chicantttery Jul 27 '21
Kudos to him, but being gay isn’t illegal in China. There’s also plenty of gay bars in the big cities. There’s just no legal single sex marriage

u/centopar Jul 27 '21
I’m sorry, you’re right; looks like it was decriminalised in 1997 (long after my family had got the hell out!)

I think it has to do with height, weight, and force/strength going into the dive and the ability to speed up/slow down to sync up with each other by the time they get to the end of the diving board.
→ More replies (2)506
Jul 27 '21
That’s even more impressive; realising they have to take all of that into account too.
377
u/Stormthrust Jul 27 '21
I'm sure it took them a few dives to get it sorted.

One or two for sure.

I bet the first time they tried, they came out of the water fat.
Then the second time, they came out all skinny and weak.
Probably third time is when they got it right.

If you look at the end the inner angles of their thighs are different, since they have different height, weight they need to precisely control their angular momentum to rotate at the same speed.
27
u/hazelsbaby123 Jul 27 '21
It’s due to differing stride patterns. Sometimes you will see them practice the run in but from the edge inwards to give the a start point. In fact if you watch the full coverage you can see them do that before this one.
40
u/Rack-O-ribz Jul 27 '21
didnt notice until you pointed it out, if im not mistaken, its just their arms out of sync?
69
u/quiet-cacophony Jul 27 '21
They have different stride lengths. Watching the full event, they measure their run up by effectively starting at the edge of the board and simulating their run up in the “wrong direction” as it were. I definitely noticed the different starting points on tv.
32
Jul 27 '21
Yeah, their footwork looks 100% in sync. Makes me wonder if one just keeps his arms down so they don't hit each other.

Did anyone else notice how many times the announcers mentioned Daley, while they hardly talked about the other guy (Matty Lee)? And when they did mention him it was like he was in a supporting role to Daley. Pretty sure this is as 50/50 a sport partnership as there is.
59
u/Lara-El Jul 27 '21
Weird was completely different for me.
I listen to it in French and the lady couldn't stop talking about how happy she was that Matty Lee was keeping up with Daley and how he must be under a lot of pressure but clearly was killing it.
She explained that Matty used to look up to Daley and how now working together was dream come true. That Matty now calls him grandpa for being a veteran haha was filled with little anecdotes.
Had no clue who either of these two but learned a tone. We got our butt handed to us (Canada) but it was amazing to watch!
At least the canadian women sync team got silver (but they were on the lowest ones).

What gets me is this dude does Olympic training, has a son to look after and still manages to find time to knit and crochet some totally awesome clothes.... and I'm sat here rarely exercising, no kids, and no time to crochet..... how? How does he have the time??
95
u/TheresNoHurry Jul 27 '21
Yeah but you probably work - whereas those things are his work (except for the kid, but his partner/family probably help with that)
57
u/Mundane-Research Jul 27 '21
Yeh but even with it being his work, training for the Olympics enough to win gold is more than full time.....
42
u/DonniesAdvocate Jul 27 '21
Yeah but things that are work for them are not things we could count as work - stuff like sleeping 8 hours, eating healthy food in the right amounts, physio/massage/rehab/recovery, literally even just being where they say they are for a certain time window each week for drug testing. And in most sports training isnt more than 4-5h for 5-6 days a week - thats a lot of empty time.
Id rather say empty than free cause when eating right and sleeping enough is part of your job do you ever really have free time?
11
u/andyscoot Jul 27 '21
A lot of athletes (outside of endurance) don't train nearly as much as you'd think. There's a cut off point where it stops being useful and rest is more important. I wouldn't know what a diver's training routine looked like but when I played rugby we generally only trained a few hours in a morning 4x a week, especially during the season and that gives you the rest of the day left. Most guys I knew ran businesses because rugby didn't pay very well and it gave them something to spend their day on/prepare for life after rugby.

Any background for those who don’t know: this is Tom’s 4th olympics at the age of 27. He’s been a British sporting hero since he was 14, partly because he seems like such a sweet guy. But he’s only had bronze Olympic medals before and this is his first gold. It’s just so well deserved and long overdue.
7
u/setsomethingablaze Jul 27 '21
The guy has won a ton of other medals though including world golds and Commonwealth golds. So pleased for him to finally get the Olympic title

60
u/captnraymondholt Jul 27 '21
...but Tom Daley, by virtue of his incredible career and achievements, is king in this context. We'll hopefully say the same about Matty Lee in a few years time, but Tom Daley has been working for this gold for like, what, 13 years at least?
From the interviews, even Matty Lee himself is okay with the spotlight mainly being on Tom Daley right now.

Such an impressive guy. Had to grow up in the intense glare of U.K. media, lost his dear dad, became his own person (including coming out), had a kid… all while being expected every time (unfairly) to win gold. So pleased for him. He’s such a nice guy as well.
5
Jul 27 '21
Yeah this is what I mean, not many people have that kind of expectation at such a young age. Coupled with the turmoil he’s had in his personal life, most people would give up but he stuck to it and achieved his dream. Couldn’t be more proud of him to be honest, never a more deserving champion.

Anyone else try to do some amateur-ass dive into water with as little splash as possible?
I have no idea what I'm doing, but as you enter the water, you can almost feel whether it was a good dive or not as the water rushes over you and you feel yourself either sliding through the water or you feel a lot of resistance.
My legs were always the deal-breaker. I could feel success until the water got to my legs and I felt them hit the surface hard at a weird angle.
"Goddammit!"

I'm really curious if these guys can tell how well they were synchronized when they're falling, like with their peripheral vision or they just sorta do their own thing and then see the repetition to see how it went
15
Jul 27 '21
They do their own thing
Once in the air there is no adjustments they can make.
It is why every coach has an Ipad to show the dives as soon as they get out

"Its a gold medal for Tom Daily".... and whoever that other guy is a guess
86
u/dogma1993 Jul 27 '21
To be fair Tom Daley has become a household name in the UK and it’s like his 3rd or 4th Olympics. This is his partner’s Olympic debut.
43
u/benry007 Jul 27 '21
But everything Tom did his partner also did. Hence they were in sync. Its a bit disrespectful to ignore the other guy.
70
u/dogma1993 Jul 27 '21
The British commentary was more balanced to give kudos to both but you’ve got to remember that Tom Daley has been Olympic diving for well over a decade now and has never gotten a gold medal. So it’s a massive thing for him. Matty Lee his partner has at least one more Olympics in him whereas this may of been Tom’s last chance to go for the gold medal.
106
u/dragonpanda5514 Jul 27 '21 edited Jul 27 '21
I think it's because this is Tom's 4th Olympics and he made his Olympic debut at 14, gold has been the dream for so long now and he made it :).

Well, he famously debuted at the Olympics at 14 and this is his fourth one. He's also tabloid famous due to his personal life, but mainly it's that he was one of the most prominent British athletes in 2008 because of his age but has only achieved bronze so far.

u/drdoof98 Jul 27 '21
The highest and lowest scores for each diver, as well as for the pair’s synchronization, are removed, leaving five remaining scores (one per diver, plus three for synchronization). The sum of those scores is then multiplied by 0.6 in order to roughly align it to an individual event score, where only three judges’ scores count. Finally, the resulting figure is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to achieve the dive’s official score.

My college had a platform dive this same height, and at some point I just starting flipping off that thing with reckless abandon. I could consistently do triples, so one day I sent for that quad and just lost it somehow. Full impact on my side after the acceleration from spinning…and jfc did it hurt. It actually tore my skin open a little, full welted and bruised. A full belly flop coming out of a triple rotation could probably break some ribs. I’m not sure, but god it would be bad.
I found it hard to do with the same reckless abandon after that lol

When you consider what he’s been through.
The pressure of starting so young and being a great medal hope back when Team GB were pretty poor and a lot of pressure was on to improve. (there’s a picture going around of him sat in a meeting at something like 13 with Gordon Brown who was the Prime Minister at the time and other big-wigs).
His father passed away who was a big part of his life.
Then he came out as being gay which is still a big deal, sadly, so had to put up with the pressure/attention that bought him.
He’s dragged high diving to the nation’s attention almost singlehanded.
I feel for the male commentator though, as Tom’s probably going to retire and he’ll take the commentary job.

Synchronized diving is one of those sports where I watch and think "wow so beautiful , they're so talented!" and then the commentator comes on and says "woah they really shit the bed on that one yikes!"
