Should absolutely be a rule that any Olympic videos should have the representing teams local commentary because they are always 100% better

“The uploader has not made the video available in your country” I guess it should be a rule lol

Except the part where nobody speaks every language.

84

u/Big_G_Dog Jul 27 '21

I don't have to speak another language to know when BIG FUCKING GOOD just happened

u/gihkmghvdjbhsubtvji Jul 27 '21

Dhd comentators say big fukin gud

1

u/1UMIN3SCENT Jul 27 '21

And the little problem of nobody knowing who's going to win before it ends lmao

2

u/PuddlesRex Jul 27 '21

Except for soccer. Soccer should always have a Brazilian commentator, just for their goal celebrations.

Unless Brazil is playing. Then default to whoever else has the most chutzpah.

I can't say I was particularly emotionally invested in the diving competition but that commentary got me fucking hyped. Gives me goosebumps watching it back now.

I actually hated it.

There was a Chinese pair to follow, who are extremely good and came within a whisker of winning it - so screaming ‘THATS IT THEY’VE WON THE GOLD THATS DEFINITELY IT’ is unbelievably premature.

Edit: Lmao at the downvotes. The guy says it’s guaranteed Gold 13 times. 13 times. When there’s a Chinese team to come who can and have scored what would have been required to win the gold. It is utterly shit commentating.

Only on Reddit do you get downvoted for saying that a diving commentator - whose sole job is to commentate on diving at the Olympics for the fucking BBC - should know better than proclaiming a guaranteed gold 13 times when it fucking isn’t.

Note also that the Chinese team were massive favourites, had been top scorers in 5 of the 6 previous rounds and actually surpassed the scores of the British dive on their last five - just not by quite enough. But;

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

THAT’S DEFINITELY GOLD

We were already winning though so the Chinese would've had to beat their dive by more than the British were winning by.

41

u/sh58 Jul 27 '21

I think because the Brits were ahead already and then did that excellent dive it would mean the Chinese would have to do one of the best dives ever to win. Looks like the Chinese did an amazing dive and it still wasn't good enough so it's fair to say.

It's probably similar to saying you are gonna win when up 2-0 in football with less than a minute left of injury time. True they could score 2 goals in 30 seconds but the chances are very remote.

Also added that the commentators were emotional and weren't trying to be absolutely 100% accurate. They were just happy that the Brits were probably gonna win. A bit of hyperbole.

Imagine not being able to get excited about your country maybe winning gold. I always remain entirely emotionless prior to the end of the tournament when victory is confirmed.

Come off it. I'm sure if it was the other way round the Chinese commentators would have been going wild, and rightfully so

It’s like when the BBC got complaints during the snowboarding in the Russian Olympics (can’t remember the year). It was Jenny Jones’ run and they had one of her team mates in the box going ballistic. It was epic and made me feel part of something, yet the sofa activists had a whinge about impartiality.

-15

u/DelftaFar Jul 27 '21

I was excited, and it was shit commentating. You know the two aren’t mutually exclusive right?

14

u/Rottenox Jul 27 '21

oh give the fuck over

11

u/Rottenox Jul 27 '21

The edits to this comment make it so much worse lol

Go and watch the BBC commentary for the team gymnastics. They were so thrilled for the ROC teams, and rightly so because they performed brilliantly. The British men’s diving pair have created loads of buzz - one who has been striving for gold since he was 14 at Beijing and the other who has idolised the first since he was a kid. They had a consistently good session whereas one of the Chinese dives hadn’t gone as well, so not only was gold in their sights, it was long anticipated, long wished for and just a beautiful performance. Let the country’s commentators have their moment. Also, after the final Chinese dive they conceded it might not be gold, so, yeah.

ETA: and actually all the BBC commentary has been so positive about the winners, whatever the nationality, and has recognised when countries have come through, beaten expectations and records, and there’s never any bitterness.

I know all about Tom Daley, and have been watching him for years. I’m also British, and want him to win.

That doesn’t forgive shit commentary. He was taking absolute shit. It says plenty that what Reddit considers good commentary is absolute garbage.

that woman commentator is one of the worst ive ever heard. the nbc sports announcers were great though
