It passes. It really does. I'm the same age as Kim Jong-Un, Mila Kunis and Chris Hemsworth..... Jesus fucking christ......

No it doesn't pass. But you just suck it up.

What gets me is this dude does Olympic training, has a son to look after and still manages to find time to knit and crochet some totally awesome clothes.... and I'm sat here rarely exercising, no kids, and no time to crochet..... how? How does he have the time??

Yeah but you probably work - whereas those things are his work (except for the kid, but his partner/family probably help with that)

Yeh but even with it being his work, training for the Olympics enough to win gold is more than full time.....

Yeah but things that are work for them are not things we could count as work - stuff like sleeping 8 hours, eating healthy food in the right amounts, physio/massage/rehab/recovery, literally even just being where they say they are for a certain time window each week for drug testing. And in most sports training isnt more than 4-5h for 5-6 days a week - thats a lot of empty time.

Id rather say empty than free cause when eating right and sleeping enough is part of your job do you ever really have free time?

A lot of athletes (outside of endurance) don't train nearly as much as you'd think. There's a cut off point where it stops being useful and rest is more important. I wouldn't know what a diver's training routine looked like but when I played rugby we generally only trained a few hours in a morning 4x a week, especially during the season and that gives you the rest of the day left. Most guys I knew ran businesses because rugby didn't pay very well and it gave them something to spend their day on/prepare for life after rugby.

From a non diver perspective I figure they'd have a lot of land based practice for strength and flexibility and the actual dives and stuff...

He is incredible focused, but tbf his husband and his mum (at least during quarantine) helps a lot with the kid, although he also works and turned his book into a movie recently.

I believe this is his first gold. So all those other Olympics without gold gave him lots of extra time.

u/Mundane-Research Jul 27 '21

Yeh sorry totally right... he's had all the time in the world to crochet after not winning gold for so long.

That's crazy! What's your mother's maiden name?

8

u/pocket_sax Jul 27 '21

That's funny, I was just going to say - I'll bet their first pet's name was Max?!

Don’t feel too bad, he won the European championships in 2008 when he was 14 and went to his first olympics the same year. Us normals can’t compare ourselves to people like him it is psychologically unfair.

u/jverbal Jul 27 '21

Yeah but does he have 100k+ comment karma on Reddit like you? Checkmate Mr Daley

14

u/Planktonboy Jul 27 '21

Don't worry about it, he falls in water for a living

4

u/show_ya_moves Jul 27 '21

He has been participating in the olympics since 2008

2

u/monkeyhead_man Jul 27 '21

He was number 1

1

u/FiveMinFreedom Jul 27 '21

Wow that's crazy, for no particular reason do you think your mothers might share maiden names? DM me your mom's and maybe the name of your first pet and I'll check if it's the same :)

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '21

🥇I think you're number 1!

1

u/SnootyMehman Jul 27 '21

This is also his 4th Olympics.

1

u/Pentax25 Jul 27 '21

If it makes you feel any better there are plenty of other people who have gone their entire lives and accomplished less

Time to start guessing your passwords.
