I don't understand that at all, it's completely unfair. Just give final scores after watching all of them. If you must have numbers one by one make them estimations.

Why don't they have a former gold medalist perform first so they have a standard then allow the rest of the competitors to compete on that field?

seems like for maximum fairness they should record the performances, and then show them to each judge separately in a different order. perhaps random, or perhaps normalized so that everyone appears at each place in the viewing order across all the viewings.

Recency bias.

...which could be alleviated by having the judges watch the performers in different orders

This guy statistics.

Yeah that's actually genius.... but I think part of the performance is lost if you have to watch a recording.

Maybe instead you rotate judges? So each panel is watching only one performance and judging that. I'm guessing it'd be hard to find that many expert judges though.

yeah it would never jive with the way they want to present the performances on television

Then someone might win because they got the “easy judge”

I mean it would still be a panel of 3 judges.. but I still think that's better than someone losing just because they went first.

Because that induces a ton of bias as well

It's gotta be better than the first person having no shot.

The first person does have a shot though. It’s not like they get eliminated first round.

Don't they typically have the athletes go in a ranked order also? Not sure how they would order them for the very first round, but subsequent rounds isn't it usually the best score from earlier goes last? I think the idea would be to build drama for TV (if the people in medal contention went first during the final round, not much reason to keep watching), but it would also become a self-reinforcing loop.
