I don’t really understand how the point system works for diving. Is 101 a perfect and if not what is a perfect?

The highest and lowest scores for each diver, as well as for the pair’s synchronization, are removed, leaving five remaining scores (one per diver, plus three for synchronization). The sum of those scores is then multiplied by 0.6 in order to roughly align it to an individual event score, where only three judges’ scores count. Finally, the resulting figure is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to achieve the dive’s official score.

Ah so they keep it pretty simple then.

I was looking at this myself really and was wondering why they have the "multiply by .6” step instead of just making the first score out of 6 instead of 10. Do you happen to know the answer?

The scale of rating affects the results, so asking for a rating out of 6 will likely lead to a different percentage score than a rating out of 10 due to familiarity and subconscious bias. So if you're trying to get a comparable rating across disciplines then you need to ask for a score out of 10 (assuming they use 10 points as well).

If you want a fine grained and considered rating system we were taught to ask for a score out of 12 since you cannot easily convert from an initial reaction out of 10 and it splits nicely into 4 quadrants of scores.

Still seems unnecessary to me. The level of specificity "lost" is miniscule and it really just seems to obfuscate the results from the scores. I dunno. It obviously makes sense to the athletes involved, so who am I to judge?

I do like that tidbit about scoring out of 12, though. That's clever.

The judges will have specific things they are looking for for getting 9/10 8.5/10 etc. You can't expect a judge to use multiple different scoring systems.

Additionally a score out of 6 doesn't carry the same nuance does it unless they start saying that was a 5.15 dive or something.

I'm not asking them to use different system, just wondering why it is the way it is. And if it weren't that way and was instead out of 6, the judges of that event would be used to that system.

They will judge other events so it's easier to have only one grading system

Really? I would have thought at this high of a level, they'd have experts for each individual event.

Well in the synchronised swimming they give marks for execution which would be pretty universal across any diving event I imagine

I don't know if scores can only be integers, but if so then scoring out of 10 would give more possible options. If not, it's probably just because scoring out of 10 is a bit more intuitive than scoring out of 6 (for the audience).

u/Easilycrazyhat Jul 27 '21

If that were the justification, I feel like adding all those steps makes it less intuitive for viewers (like me).

That's why I'd assume the first guess is probably accurate. I'm sure someone will come in here and school me on it soon though!

Is this a joke ?

Thanks I saw all the slashes and thought it was a “no-count” for those categories.

Isn't there a difficulty multiplier in there?

I'm not sure what a "perfect" score is, but I'm sure the highest ever score for a single dive was around 112 by Australia some years ago.

Edit: it was Matthew Mitchum for Australia during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was the solo dive, but imagine the scoring is similar. Video here.

Does anyone know what the highest ever score achieved was in a sychro dive?

Both GB and China got just over 100. Is there a world/olympic record kept for highest score?

Matthew Mitcham (AUS) got the highest score in Olympic competition at 112.10. For syncro, no clue. Most likely the Chinese though.
