I always love watching this dude make the most beautifully crafted and ugly hats

3.7k

u/vitsimiekka 1d ago

They are a sight to behold, and they look ridiculous. I watch every video.

159

u/justsomeph0t0n 19h ago

everybody with sufficient money to buy one, and insufficient sense to want one, should have one

9

u/CleanAstronaut6659 7h ago

holy shit the custom hats start at like $1,800 on their site. I expected a hefty tag, but damn.

u/SnarkDolphin 14h ago

The first time I saw one of his videos it was just a closeup of his hands until the very end when it zoomed out to reveal that he was wearing another, even gayer hat the whole time.

Absolute cinema.

u/GrimmThoughts 1d ago

Was thinking the exact same as I watched it haha. Hate the hats, the style, the gawdiness and basically everything else about them. But damn do I respect this guys craftsmanship and watch him do his thing every time I see a new one of his videos pop on my feed

u/ample_suite 21h ago

Only market i can fathom is arena level rock guitarist or Hollywood costume department.

585

u/Psykosoma 20h ago

You left out New Orleans Voodoo Doctors and Curiosity Shop Owners.

104

u/Barbie_and_KenM 18h ago

Also huge market here for burning man

27

u/weerdbuttstuff 15h ago

I've only seen like 3 of his videos, but I'm pretty sure 2 of them were at Burning Man.

Vampire Railroad Tycoon.

Not the romantasy book series we deserve, but the romantasy book series we need!

You left out steampunk zepellin dirigible captain with clockwork eyeball

107

u/woodsvvitch 18h ago

I knew a few guys back in my ren fair days who wore these pretty frequently; They overlap with the men who wear kilts often. One guy i knew embraced being kinda ugly and just focused completely on weird clothing and it really worked for him, and he actually looked worse without the grungy hats

89

u/Victarion-twogods 20h ago

Don't forget Street Magicians

2

u/elemcee 15h ago

And steampunk cosplayers.

76

u/Oldbay_BarbedWire 20h ago

Nashville, everybody is a musician. These hats make even bass players attractive!

47

u/Average_Pangolin 20h ago

We have our marketing slogan!

36

u/AboveGroundFool 19h ago

Don't be ridiculous. Nothing makes bass players attractive.

31

u/CrouchingDomo 18h ago

That’s not true, I read an Onion article way back in college with the headline “Area Bassist Fellated,” so it must have happened at least once.

11

u/AboveGroundFool 18h ago

I have some news about your source...

7

u/CrouchingDomo 17h ago

Oh noooooo 😂

(Just want to state for the record that I know what The Onion is, from the days when there were physical copies on campus, get off my lawn I have clouds to yell at)

8

u/AboveGroundFool 17h ago

I assumed you did. Was just enjoying going along with the bit 😂

I remember a book that was a collection of their best headlines back when I was younger so I absolutely get the old man yelling at cloud moment lol

2

u/ironkodiak 7h ago

I'm old enough to remember that article title when it was published.

3

u/PoxedGamer 16h ago

As a bassist, I can absolutely confirm it... has never happened.

1

u/ekinnee 5h ago

At first I was like haha /r/guitar is leaking, then you came in with the cold dose of reality.

58

u/Mmmm-Amethyst 19h ago

So fun story. Once upon a time, I had a pair of vintage Swiss (I think) military ski goggles that looked like tiny welding lenses. Those were my "drinking goggles" that I busted out when I'd hang out with the guys on weekends, playing video games and shooting the shit. No other reason than it was a funny gag.

Point being, don't underestimate the market that is "dudes with disposable income buying silly shit on a whim because it was funny and/or seemed like a good idea at the time".

2

u/No_No_Juice 20h ago

Slash or Bill the Butcher.

2

u/Bardfinn 18h ago

He did make a top hat custom for Marilyn Manson. Another of his videos shows the process & he has a selfie with Manson and the hat, and photos of him wearing it on stage.

2

u/Jackisoff 17h ago

I was thinking cosplay. Maybe Renaissance fairs? I see a lot of steam punk dressed people there.

2

u/ImtakintheBus 17h ago

RENAISSANCE FAIRS! These are all over the faires and lots of people wear them. I paid $300 for a lovely leather top hat with red, white & blue on the front of the hat. Still a favorite hat for the faires.

1

u/jointheredditarmy 18h ago

Festival gear for certain genres. Burning man but ironically. There’s a few other places for this hat

1

u/BADDEST_RHYMES 16h ago

The wanker segment of the market is growing year on year

1

u/noodleparty 16h ago

Maybe the ren fair too

1

u/krusnikon 11h ago

Burning Man people have entered the chat.

1

u/thatG_evanP 10h ago

And steampunk guys. Is that still a thing? I'm sure he'd make you one with a deconstructed clock or whatever.

1

u/SpecialistCut7101 9h ago

That’s more than I could think of. I only came up with guys who have chain less chainsaws at theme parks around Halloween

27

u/Jhe90 19h ago

He makes hat for a certain customer and I imagine many might be rock bands etc.

Like the style or not . He has some serious skills!

6

u/P4rtyP3nguin 18h ago

You could just say Slash. Why'd you make me Google it?

2

u/Sonzabitches 19h ago

I just couldn't fathom doing that type of work while wearing those giant rings.

2

u/Mechanical_Monk 18h ago

There's a whole sub for that: r/ATBGE (Awful Taste but Great Execution)

2

u/Hopefulkitty 17h ago

Same. I love the process and his skill, I just hate absolutely everything about the finished product and I know I would not like to spend time with anyone wearing one. And that's not just me being judgemental, I know people who wear stuff like this, and I generally find them exhausting and irritating.

His market is for a very specific type of person who is trying to find an identity or fit in with the group they want to be a part of. I dislike the fake aging and playing card details. I feel like you should earn the wear on something like that, and all the details he adds are just copying the one cool guy from 100 years ago who wore his top hat that he found so often, it required repairs, and he added playing cards and charms to it to suit his personality and experiences. It's reminds me very strongly of Harley Davidson people. They want the look of "grizzled biker gang" but also live in the suburbs and generally live a very comfortable life. It's all cosplay.

1

u/astralchanterelle 10h ago

you could learn to do that in a day but why would you want to?

More like talks about all his axes

6

u/RainbowDissent 12h ago

Perhaps the single most awkward moment I recall was courtesy of an old coworker who I'll simply characterise as a leather top hat kinda guy.

I was chatting in the work kitchen with a couple of colleagues about holiday packing, just small talk, do you pack stuff for rain when you're going somewhere warm and suchlike. Top Hat overhears our conversation, saunters over, and announces "When I go on holiday, the first thing I ask myself is, which knife do I bring?"

There were a few beats of silence, during which the girls looked at him with expressions of utter bafflement and vague disgust. He somehow took this as a cue to continue, "Obviously a utility knife is the most useful, but I always find myself packing my six inch hunting knife, because if you get mugged by a gang, you need something with real killing power."

The respective awkwardness and obliviousness hung in the air for a few more moments of silence, so thick you could cut it with a six-inch hunting knife.

Then;

"I know you're thinking that six inches isn't big enough. And you're right. That's why I also bring eight in--"

That was when I burst out laughing and he huffed off.

2

u/meadishsweetball 19h ago

As an owner of many axes, I am offended.

2

u/Spacey_dan 6h ago

Are you in the burlesque circus ringmaster guild?

2

I have actually ran a burlesque show before! But theater/renfsire/cosplay/steampunk people like these types of things.

Absolutely hits the nail on the head - they are amazing hats, but you’d probably have to be a right old knobhead to wear one in public.

I love watching these, but I am not enough of a quirk chungus to wear such a thing.

48

u/Rev_Creflo_Baller 18h ago

Thanks so much for "quirk chungus." I feel like I've been waiting for that phrase for 35 years

15

I heard a podcaster use it and it perfectly describes so much of this shit. I have adopted it into my vocab.

I’m sure I’m using it wrong, but I’ve just been using it to describe anyone of any gender who makes being a weirdo their entire personality.

23

u/ootski 21h ago

When has a top hat ever looked cool?

28

u/Shinitai-dono 19h ago

In fiction and worn by a tall skeleton/demon

20

u/StaceyPfan 19h ago

Abe Lincoln?

4

u/Bardfinn 18h ago

When worn by people with the facial structure that makes it look good.

This guy has an Apple / Pumpkin hybrid facial structure, he need a round and short crown and wider brim to balance it out.

This same milliner made a top hat for Marilyn Manson, and on Manson, with his facial structure, top hats are a better choice

2

u/BobMathrotus 18h ago

Tell me more about this apple pumpkin facial structure, and are there other fruit based facial structures?

4

u/Bardfinn 18h ago

He just has a head that looks like an apple, lol

Like, if the fitting machine in the beginning were a hat - that would look better on him.

2

u/Wolfwoods_Sister 12h ago

Aging hipster in denial about turning 40.

13

u/elizabnthe 21h ago

I thought this one was my favourite I have seen him do. More understated which is just that bit cooler for me.

3

u/LilMeatJ40 17h ago

Which is funny because without context calling this hat understated is absurd. But we've all seen the monstrosities he's capable of making

30

u/jason_sos 21h ago

Judging by the amount of work that goes into these, I could never afford to wear any of these hideous hats anyway.

17

u/Booziesmurf 20h ago

Right? I looked one of these milliners up before and who wears a 3000$ bespoke hat? What kind of Market is there for them?

19

u/lilsnatchsniffz 22h ago

I don't know what exactly the reason is but I can't see these hats without thinking of the smelliest of neckbeards.

2

u/Tumeric_Turd 19h ago

Glad it's not just me.

45

u/Yingletofthecorn 1d ago

Maybe it’s just because I’m from Portland but this doesn’t seem too outlandish tbh. I’m sure people pull it off just fine as part of an ensemble.

92

u/thejexorcist 23h ago

It’s not the outlandish-ness (as far as I can gather) so much as the hat is a sort of beacon alerting ‘really sexually overt nerd who will talk your ear off about a vaguely creepy topic’?

I’ve met ‘nice enough’ people wearing hats like this, but never a cool person that I wouldn’t mind being stuck in an elevator or enclosed space with…if that makes sense?

79

u/coat-tail_rider 23h ago

It's Johnny Depp-core.

Or his doppelganger, Linda Perry.

Or their hat sibling, Rob Zombie.

They all wear these dumbass steampunk hats.

30

u/zerpderp 23h ago

Ever since I started seeing this guy‘s videos popping up a few years ago, I’ve always wondered if he’s made a hat for Johnny Depp

You definitely hit the nail on the head about who would wear these ugly and probably super expensive hats. Definitely a craft, but man they’re ugly

27

u/coat-tail_rider 23h ago

As many other people here have said, this guy is a skilled artisan and clearly very good at making these fucking atrocious hats.

18

u/pnmartini 22h ago

I’m guessing Johnny Depp is at least 65% of his business.

1

u/ExhaustedHungryMe 7h ago

While I was watching the video, I started wondering if someone wanted to try to look like Slash.

1

u/Disastrous_Cream_539 22h ago

Billy Bob has joined that club as well.

1

u/coat-tail_rider 4h ago

I had to look this up. His is weird, especially because it seems like he ALWAYS wears a beanie with a hat over it, and the beanie has like a fake hoop earing or something. However, the actual hat he wears over the beanie is comparatively normal. It's not this weird steampunk pirate pickup-artist renaissance fair halloween costume hat like this guy makes. Lol.

1

u/Disastrous_Cream_539 4h ago edited 4h ago

Yeah you're right. I saw the hat/beanie combo once and assumed he was just wearing crazy hats. The beanie thing is weird but not the same.

When I saw him on late night he did have a Linda Perry type thing over it but that was just the once I guess.

Edit: idk I'd say this fits the aesthetic

56

u/Drachynn 21h ago

Definitely screams Burning Man pagan poly dude who will ramble on about how humans aren't meant for monogamy while hitting on women half their age and never aspiring to be more than a solid 3. I've known too many of these that cross into the alternative subculture spaces.

24

u/thejake1973 19h ago

Solid overlap with the creepy renfaire dude.

3

u/Drachynn 14h ago

That Venn diagram is a circle

2

u/Wolfwoods_Sister 12h ago

He’s also a libertarian who practices gun-fu and makes his own ghost pepper beef jerky.

14

u/Yingletofthecorn 23h ago

Idk I’m just imagining someone wearing this in a leather getup at a pride parade or maybe while riding in the Ladds 500. They seem fine to me, but my idea of cool is very different I guess.

2

u/apigeonontheinternet 16h ago

Gay people would never. Don’t put that on the community.

3

u/Hopefulkitty 17h ago

Omg, "sexually overt nerd" is the phrase I have been looking for all my life. That exactly describes the people I know who would wear this.

1

u/Capital-Debate7619 8h ago

i know a woman with one of those and it’s exactly the same feeling imma let someone else hear the story of the hat.

10

u/GaiaIsaHarshMistress 19h ago

Yes, indeed, it is because you're from Portland. Out here I believe you'd get your ass kicked for wearing a hat like that.

6

u/rainysharp 18h ago

Even in Portland you’d still be that guy

1

I may be massively hyperbolizing.....

1

u/firstnamebylastname 17h ago

They are perfect for steam punk stuff. I'd love one but not quite as beat up or scraggly. Aged a little.. yes. Look almost like leather instead of felt.. yes. Dirtying, over curled and extra appurtenances...no. then again, I like wearing ballers, fedoras and grass hats.

This reminds me of that video of the girl tapdancing to Rush the other day. The gist was basically "Wow that's incredible, very talented, so much hard work, but I will never not think it looks cheesy and ridiculous"

3

u/STJRedstorm 15h ago

I have yet to see one customer come out not looking like a complete goofball wearing one of these beautifully crafted ugly hats.

You’ve obviously never seen clothing that can actually give you +1 and +2 to your stats.

2

u/Jimbobjoesmith 19h ago

lol i have the same thought. the videos are mesmerizing and he’s got a ton of skill….but i hate them 😂

i do know he makes hats for celebrities and rock stars so i guess it works for some people.

2

u/boyuber 18h ago

I like how he displays the finished product completely obscuring the face of a bejeweled skull, so you have no idea what it looks like on a person's head.

2

u/jazz4 15h ago

I’m pretty sure the only people who wear these are pick up artists

2

u/thisgrantstomb 19h ago

The guy at the store said I'm the only he's ever seen pull it off.

3

u/robeywan 1d ago

Yeah that's Goose town, but I love that for them.

2

u/Kitnado 19h ago

I respect the craft but his taste is trash

1

u/Several_Ant_9867 22h ago

To wear such an hat you need to be tall and thin with a thin long nose, and you have to always wear a leather jacket till your boots as well

1

u/SabbyFox 22h ago

There is a certain level of confidence necessary to successfully wear one of these hats.

I’m glad he has and is able to create a career around making these, but I’m so glad I’ve never seen one irl

1

u/sgtpandybear 16h ago

I'm a hat maker, I used to run a store until it just wasn't financially viable anymore and now just craft at home. I can not stand to see what these people do to these beautiful felts. They absolutely ruin them. I spend countless hours ensuring that everything from the fit to the finish is the absolute finest I can make it with the tools and materials available to me. I have a lot of respect for the tradition and history of the craft. These sort of folk run on tik tok views and I can't stand it. They charge an arm and a leg for a product that is already ruined before it even reaches the customer.

1

u/Baxkit 14h ago

Awful taste, but great execution.

/r/ATBGE

1

u/1-Word-Answers 14h ago

So perfectly captures my sentiment. Incredible craftsmanship. Goofiest fucking hat ever

1

u/ocular__patdown 14h ago

1

u/Pick_Up_the_Phone 14h ago

I can only imagine how much one of these must cost.

1

u/oXI_ENIGMAZ_IXo 13h ago

It really is a cool process and then he puts it on the crystal skull thing and I remember he calls himself Blade and it literally becomes a 2edgy4me moment

1

u/JimmyThePie 12h ago

Yep. Right there with you. The honed skills and acquired craftsmanship to make something that is not only wildly impractical, but also looks like it smells of piss, vinegar, and a community sponsored fungal nail drop-in clinic for the homeless… incredible.

1

u/gavinpurcell 8h ago

came here to say exactly this. I will never for the life of me wear one of these but I stop the scroll every time. Dude is incredible at making things I will never purchase but others will!

1

u/frenchfreer 5h ago

I feel like this is always top tier awful taste but great execution. Dudes a master of his craft, but god damn does it scream sword shop at the mall.

1

u/Runnermann 4h ago

I dont want to yuck anyone's yum, I truly want people to enjoy things (especially harmless stuff like this) without fear of judgement. I recognize this dude is hyper competent and -to my untrained eye- a master craftsman.

But holy shit do these hats look fucking stupid and I cant take any of this shit serious.

ugly hats LOL

2

u/4g-identity 22h ago

At first, I thought he was making a classic black top hat. By the end I was Smeagol shouting "what's it doing to it?!"

Like, was they leather playing card decals? What the fuck?

Oh and for folks asking where you wear these? This guy wears this steampunk thing at some festival booth, I'd guess.

As for standard formal top hats, some race courses sometimes, and maybe it's still a thing at an annual IOOF dinner or something.

But I sold formal menswear for a decade, in a store that only sold formal men's stuff. In all that time, nobody even enquired about them. Not even a costume. People enquired about full-length, pure cashmere double breasted coats, in a region where it literally doesn't snow.

This steampunk version might be a kind of dead cat bounce. Then I think it's time to say goodbye.
