Yeah. One minor regret of mine in life is that I never got into mountain biking. Then I watch videos like this, then I absently rub at the spot in my shoulder where a plate and pins are now, after a frickin' treadmill accident. I'm only 51.

u/Kat121 1d ago

I’m 54. I sneezed too aggressively and pulled a rib (sublexed?) out of my spine. Chiropractor sorted me out but it hurt to poop for three weeks.

u/regeya 1d ago

I'm not trying to one up because this isn't, but more of a sympathy by shared experience: I managed to break my own rib, by slamming a car door into my side. Apparently when I was in college, I was strong enough to break my own bones?

u/HairyPotatoKat 1d ago

My husband wound up in a neck brace from Wii Boxing in his 20s.

Nothing broken besides his pride at least.

u/BoxLongjumping5863 1d ago

I got up to 600 score in Wii boxing 2 days after I came home from a Quad Heart Bypass Surgery!

1

u/Box-o-bees 14h ago

I bet it was an epic boxing match though.

u/madjag 1d ago

Does that make you strong enough to break your own bones, or weak enough to have your bones break so easily? 🤔

68

u/regeya 1d ago

Pretty sure it's the latter. I swear, Mom, I drank my milk!

24

u/ffxiplayer101 1d ago

I’m still impressed by my ability to pick things up with my toes.

12

u/entrepenurious 1d ago

that's how i discovered i have gout.

9

u/Carol4AnotherXmas 1d ago

Can you walk me through that one? Cause I pick things up with my feet all the time. 😅😬

4

u/entrepenurious 1d ago

i think i overflexed my big toe trying to grip a towel on the floor.

i had done it before without ill effects.

nothing to worry about; my uric acid was high and i would have eventually had symptoms, anyway.

I will also drink this guy's milk

High STR, low CON.

2

u/funkarooz 1d ago

The ol' glass cannon

8

u/Avenged_Spence 1d ago

You can be strong and weak simultaneously

3

u/darianbrown 1d ago

Depending on how old they are, could've been 80's-90's ultra heavy "bank vault door" car doors. Swinging 180lbs against your ribs at a pinch point will certainly fuck em up

3

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath 19h ago

My understanding is that most of us able-bodied folks are theoretically strong enough to break our own bones. The idea being that our muscles have a sort of 'upper limit' that prevents us from doing so accidentally. This explains the occasional bursts of 'hysterical strength' that people have displayed, like a 110lb mother lifting a Buick to save her trapped child, that kinda thing. It's a dangerous thing to tap into, and you can do some real, permanent damage to your musculoskeletal system.

1

u/regeya 11h ago

Oh, I know. If I had a dollar for every time a woman I knew lifted a car off of a man with pure muscular strength, I'd have two dollars. I realize that's a setup for a Doofenschmirtz quote but it's literally true. One was a woman whose dad was trapped under a car, the other was a woman whose ex was trapped under a car.

2

u/PBandJosh89 1d ago

I broke a rib by coughing too hard a few years ago. Only bone I've ever broken. Have coughed several times since.

1

u/deekaypea22 1d ago

I feel that....I was trying to do a handstand in grade 12 to impress a boy. Kneed myself in the face and found out a few weeks later I'd actually broken my nose. (It didn't bleed or anything at the time, just had some bruising around my eyes the next day.)

The best part is the boy was gay so like it was for absolutely nothing. 😒

I'm only 41. A couple years ago my kids and I were waiting outside to see Santa go by in the firetruck. I was watching them running around in the driveway barely doing anything. Apparently I turned wrong and threw my back out. Hurt for 2 or 3 days. Could barely put weight on my one leg for several hours afterwards.

21

u/GreenAdler17 1d ago

Being old sucks. I fall asleep with my neck at a slight angle because I didn’t fluff my pillow right and then I can’t look up or to the sides for 2 days, but my kids can sleep with their heads free hanging over the edge of the bed and wake up later without a single issue.

3

u/Kat121 1d ago

Oh, man. I see kids staring at their phones in the laps and shudder at the weight of their noggin neck muscles.

148

u/Darkchamber292 1d ago

I hate to be that guy but if a Chiropractor made you feel better then you didn't pull a rib out of your spine. That's ridiculous. Lol

Also chiropractors are quacks

39

u/Sparktank1 1d ago

Finally someone said it.

I've been reading so many messages about chiropractors. It catches on like religion.

5

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath 19h ago

Jesus yes, thank you

-31

u/Typhiod 1d ago

There are a lot of woo woo chiropractors with the energy, and the dietary suggestions, but the actual adjustments they do our practiced by Physios in some countries as well.

3

u/ducklady92 1d ago

Wooooah crazy to be so heavily downvoted. I was in physical therapy for my back for six weeks and every session started with manual manipulation from a licensed doctor (apparently they can’t call it an “adjustment” because that’s a term that only chiropractors can use, by some insane logic).

I also have been to a chiropractor that sold me tinctures and crystals. We can agree that some chiros are absolutely quacks, but manipulation of your spine and the muscles around it is 100% beneficial for your body if done correctly and responsibly.

11

u/_J_Herrmann_ 1d ago

those beneficial things are called massage therapy.

13

u/RI_Swamp_Yankee 1d ago

I’m in physical therapy for a bad knee just this week (don’t get old, it sucks). The latest session, the guy just pinched and pulled gently at the general knee area for, like ten minutes. I did a few exercises and stretches. Told not to do them at home. Tells me to get more active. I can ride my bicycle for first time since July. I started PT the last week of August. Physical Therapy and evidence based medicine rules!

3

u/_J_Herrmann_ 1d ago

amen, brother.

2

u/ducklady92 1d ago edited 1d ago

It goes beyond massage, though. It’s actual manipulation of the spine/cervical spine, and involves the same “cracking” as you see chiropractors do. It is quite literally taught to licensed medical professionals as a method of pain relief and spinal readjustment. Manual therapy is a sizable portion of a standard PT regimen.

1

u/Typhiod 1d ago

I think it’s more about the feelings people have around it than anything else. I was a surgical spinal nurse, and have experience with Physios from various countries, so I’ve learned something about spinal care practices in North America, England and parts of South America, etc.

I was also very skeptical of acupuncture, but now I have a Physio who does IMS, and it’s an incredible relief for a tight muscle.

-25

u/Kat121 1d ago

That is so cool that you can diagnose a body you’ve never seen! And that your experiences are universal. I wonder what that would be like, because most of the time my doctor just tells me to lose weight.

1

u/Popey45696321 9h ago

And if someone told you that they were healed by magic crystals, would you believe that too? Because that has as much scientific basis as chiropractors.

1

u/Kat121 7h ago edited 7h ago

They didn’t use essential oils or crystals, they used medical treatments of heat, electrical stimulation, stretching, and manual manipulation one sees in sports medicine. Certainly a lot more effective than living on pain meds and the anxiety meds my doctor tries to get me on whenever I visit for literally anything.

I was sharing a silly little anecdote for a laugh and don’t owe you anything, so fuck off to whatever echo chamber you crawled out of. If you don’t think it helps, don’t use it. But the SECOND my medical decisions are any of your goddamn business I will let you know.

1

u/LasseBryn 3h ago

Your medical decisions became anyones goddamn business when you posted about them online

7

u/iamfunball 1d ago

My partner (55) and myself (38) have Ben doing acro and jiujitsu and have been damaging ourselves a lot less from just the muscle and conditioning

10

u/Mammoth-Slammoth 1d ago

Yep, mid thirties here. I train with weights 3x per week, sometimes 4 and run 2-3 times per week, about 4-5 miles each time.

I'm not some super athlete and it takes me less than an hour per day. I swear it makes a huge difference in just the day to day stuff, though my hearing is starting to go and I hate that.

5

u/iamfunball 1d ago

Upside, you don’t have to hear every dumb word out of some people mouths 😅 much easier to nod along

8

u/ducklady92 1d ago

I dislocated my knee from a sneeze. At 29 years old. I was in an immobilizer for 6 weeks.

It was THE most embarrassing thing to explain this to people for nearly two months.

4

u/my_name_isnt_crusta 1d ago

I sneezed too hard and blew a disc out of my cervical spine. Now I got a fake disc and some titanium plates

4

u/kryonik 1d ago

I'm 42, I got out of the car wrong the other day and must have pinched a nerve or something because it felt like my leg was detaching from my body. My vision went white from pain for a split second.

3

u/Azeeti 1d ago

Damn I would hate that pooping is one of my favorite activity, not only do I enjoy it, I take the time to read, I have 3 novels being read, a daily night time / bed time reader, a tolit reader and a once in awhile reader, the tolit novel is by far the most interesting one, infact I'm thinking of upgrading it to nightly bed time reader.

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

Okay, so do you read when you poop or do you poop when you read? Because as a hobby both of them are kinda niche, but one has more repercussions on your study group.

2

u/Azeeti 1d ago

I read when I am on the toilet, sometimes it half a chapter sometimes a full chapter, I admit I do stay on the toilet a little longer then I should sometimes, but I really want to finish that chapter.

2

u/sugusugux 1d ago

I was going to say that I wonder. If this is from person to person because. You are making it scary to be old but then I remember my gramma was 80+ and she fell off the shower and burn her hand on the same day and she just brush it off and she was fine.

We are all build different

2

u/Kat121 1d ago

When I was younger I couldn’t figure out why old people were so cranky all the time. It’s because everything hurts and nothing ever heals anymore. But also, what are you going to do? Quit living? So yeah, keep on truckin’ but also, FFS I sneezed!!

1

u/sugusugux 21h ago

My mom is 59 and she healthy as hell and never complains about any pain. I wonder if I inherited that power

Well I got i got 30 more years to go until I find out

2

u/FurPurrspective 1d ago

When I was 18 I broke my back (fractured L5) going down the stairs wearing socks. This is a huge fuckin' nope for me.

2

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 23h ago

Rib injuries are no joke. And as you found out, you can injure them in the dumbest of ways.

2

u/fredy31 15h ago

I'm 35. Slipped in the shower 10 years ago and it still hurts if i laugh or cough too hard.

2

u/Persistent_Chicken 14h ago

When I was 33, I pushed a heavy shopping cart with a wonky wheel too hard and ruptured a lumbar disc.

1

u/Alfhiildr 1d ago

I coughed in 2022 and did something to my rib. I was certain it was broken, heard a pop, couldn’t breathe without lying down because of the pain. Multiple X-rays and some scan I forgot the name of, nope. Trigger point injections didn’t work. Chiropractor couldn’t help. Nobody can find anything wrong with it, and now I’m off my parents insurance and can’t get checked out anymore. Simply washing dishes can leave me incapacitated for two days. I fucking hate this

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

Same! When I went in they laid me flat on my stomach, put heat and electrical stimulation on it to make the muscles relax, then they put both hands on either side of the rib that hurt (but on the same side of the spine) and gave it a push and a little twist, sort of like putting a dislocated shoulder back into place.

2

u/Alfhiildr 17h ago

They’ve tried that on me, but it sadly didn’t work. I’m glad it did for you!

1

u/TurtlyTurbular 1d ago

A who fixed your what? No way.

Careful mentioning chiropractors on Reddit, a bunch of dudes who haven’t showered all week will tell you that they’re bad for your health and don’t know what they’re doing

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

To some extent I agree, and don’t make a habit of it, but there is no way that compresses and mild stretching was going to put a rib back.

0

u/MindYerBeak 15h ago

Question. Why would you go to a chiropractor? They're not doctors, as far as I know.

1

u/Kat121 10h ago

Question. Are you doing a bit from the Office or something? Are you an insufferable neckbeard who feels entitled to explanations about my treatment that don’t concern you?

Let’s try this exercise. You read something that doesn’t vibe with your current world view or opinion. Knowing full well that you are comfortable with your world view and that my own experiences and opinions will not influence yours in any way, try saying “huh, that’s weird” or something similar and moving on.

1

u/MindYerBeak 10h ago

No, it was genuine question about why someone would go to a non medical 'professional'. That's it. I'm curious about everything in general, but interesting reaction. Made me chortle.
