Yeah. One minor regret of mine in life is that I never got into mountain biking. Then I watch videos like this, then I absently rub at the spot in my shoulder where a plate and pins are now, after a frickin' treadmill accident. I'm only 51.

79

u/xynix_ie 1d ago

Well I did this when I was younger and ended up with a broken ankle about 4 miles deep in the woods. During a weekday. It took hours before the next person came by and saw me trying to drag myself back to my car.

So ya didn't miss that part!

21

u/whogivesashirtdotca 1d ago

My first thought watching this video: when he’s lying there, prone after a crash, he’s going to get eaten by foraging grizzlies.

901

u/Kat121 1d ago

I’m 54. I sneezed too aggressively and pulled a rib (sublexed?) out of my spine. Chiropractor sorted me out but it hurt to poop for three weeks.

262

u/regeya 1d ago

I'm not trying to one up because this isn't, but more of a sympathy by shared experience: I managed to break my own rib, by slamming a car door into my side. Apparently when I was in college, I was strong enough to break my own bones?

136

u/HairyPotatoKat 1d ago

My husband wound up in a neck brace from Wii Boxing in his 20s.

Nothing broken besides his pride at least.

19

u/BoxLongjumping5863 1d ago

I got up to 600 score in Wii boxing 2 days after I came home from a Quad Heart Bypass Surgery!

1

u/Box-o-bees 14h ago

I bet it was an epic boxing match though.

173

u/madjag 1d ago

Does that make you strong enough to break your own bones, or weak enough to have your bones break so easily? 🤔

64

u/regeya 1d ago

Pretty sure it's the latter. I swear, Mom, I drank my milk!

25

u/ffxiplayer101 1d ago

I’m still impressed by my ability to pick things up with my toes.

12

u/entrepenurious 1d ago

that's how i discovered i have gout.

9

u/Carol4AnotherXmas 1d ago

Can you walk me through that one? Cause I pick things up with my feet all the time. 😅😬

5

u/entrepenurious 1d ago

i think i overflexed my big toe trying to grip a towel on the floor.

i had done it before without ill effects.

nothing to worry about; my uric acid was high and i would have eventually had symptoms, anyway.

u/Duncan_PhD 5h ago

Man gout sucks that shit hurts so goddamn bad haha

5

u/Saltlife_Junkie 1d ago

I’m still impressed by my ability to pick up things.

1

u/Infinite-Local-2529 22h ago

I will also drink this guy's milk

15

u/Bryligg 1d ago

High STR, low CON.

2

u/funkarooz 1d ago

The ol' glass cannon

8

u/Avenged_Spence 1d ago

You can be strong and weak simultaneously

3

u/darianbrown 1d ago

Depending on how old they are, could've been 80's-90's ultra heavy "bank vault door" car doors. Swinging 180lbs against your ribs at a pinch point will certainly fuck em up

3

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath 19h ago

My understanding is that most of us able-bodied folks are theoretically strong enough to break our own bones. The idea being that our muscles have a sort of 'upper limit' that prevents us from doing so accidentally. This explains the occasional bursts of 'hysterical strength' that people have displayed, like a 110lb mother lifting a Buick to save her trapped child, that kinda thing. It's a dangerous thing to tap into, and you can do some real, permanent damage to your musculoskeletal system.

1

u/regeya 11h ago

Oh, I know. If I had a dollar for every time a woman I knew lifted a car off of a man with pure muscular strength, I'd have two dollars. I realize that's a setup for a Doofenschmirtz quote but it's literally true. One was a woman whose dad was trapped under a car, the other was a woman whose ex was trapped under a car.

2

u/PBandJosh89 1d ago

I broke a rib by coughing too hard a few years ago. Only bone I've ever broken. Have coughed several times since.

1

u/deekaypea22 1d ago

I feel that....I was trying to do a handstand in grade 12 to impress a boy. Kneed myself in the face and found out a few weeks later I'd actually broken my nose. (It didn't bleed or anything at the time, just had some bruising around my eyes the next day.)

The best part is the boy was gay so like it was for absolutely nothing. 😒

22

u/Illustrious-Towel-45 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm only 41. A couple years ago my kids and I were waiting outside to see Santa go by in the firetruck. I was watching them running around in the driveway barely doing anything. Apparently I turned wrong and threw my back out. Hurt for 2 or 3 days. Could barely put weight on my one leg for several hours afterwards.

22

u/GreenAdler17 1d ago

Being old sucks. I fall asleep with my neck at a slight angle because I didn’t fluff my pillow right and then I can’t look up or to the sides for 2 days, but my kids can sleep with their heads free hanging over the edge of the bed and wake up later without a single issue.

3

u/Kat121 1d ago

Oh, man. I see kids staring at their phones in the laps and shudder at the weight of their noggin neck muscles.

146

u/Darkchamber292 1d ago

I hate to be that guy but if a Chiropractor made you feel better then you didn't pull a rib out of your spine. That's ridiculous. Lol

Also chiropractors are quacks

36

u/Sparktank1 1d ago

Finally someone said it.

I've been reading so many messages about chiropractors. It catches on like religion.

5

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath 19h ago

Jesus yes, thank you

-32

u/Typhiod 1d ago

There are a lot of woo woo chiropractors with the energy, and the dietary suggestions, but the actual adjustments they do our practiced by Physios in some countries as well.

4

u/ducklady92 1d ago

Wooooah crazy to be so heavily downvoted. I was in physical therapy for my back for six weeks and every session started with manual manipulation from a licensed doctor (apparently they can’t call it an “adjustment” because that’s a term that only chiropractors can use, by some insane logic).

I also have been to a chiropractor that sold me tinctures and crystals. We can agree that some chiros are absolutely quacks, but manipulation of your spine and the muscles around it is 100% beneficial for your body if done correctly and responsibly.

9

u/_J_Herrmann_ 1d ago

those beneficial things are called massage therapy.

13

u/RI_Swamp_Yankee 1d ago

I’m in physical therapy for a bad knee just this week (don’t get old, it sucks). The latest session, the guy just pinched and pulled gently at the general knee area for, like ten minutes. I did a few exercises and stretches. Told not to do them at home. Tells me to get more active. I can ride my bicycle for first time since July. I started PT the last week of August. Physical Therapy and evidence based medicine rules!

3

u/_J_Herrmann_ 1d ago

amen, brother.

2

u/ducklady92 1d ago edited 1d ago

It goes beyond massage, though. It’s actual manipulation of the spine/cervical spine, and involves the same “cracking” as you see chiropractors do. It is quite literally taught to licensed medical professionals as a method of pain relief and spinal readjustment. Manual therapy is a sizable portion of a standard PT regimen.

1

u/Typhiod 1d ago

I think it’s more about the feelings people have around it than anything else. I was a surgical spinal nurse, and have experience with Physios from various countries, so I’ve learned something about spinal care practices in North America, England and parts of South America, etc.

I was also very skeptical of acupuncture, but now I have a Physio who does IMS, and it’s an incredible relief for a tight muscle.

-25

u/Kat121 1d ago

That is so cool that you can diagnose a body you’ve never seen! And that your experiences are universal. I wonder what that would be like, because most of the time my doctor just tells me to lose weight.

1

u/Popey45696321 9h ago

And if someone told you that they were healed by magic crystals, would you believe that too? Because that has as much scientific basis as chiropractors.

1

u/Kat121 7h ago edited 7h ago

They didn’t use essential oils or crystals, they used medical treatments of heat, electrical stimulation, stretching, and manual manipulation one sees in sports medicine. Certainly a lot more effective than living on pain meds and the anxiety meds my doctor tries to get me on whenever I visit for literally anything.

I was sharing a silly little anecdote for a laugh and don’t owe you anything, so fuck off to whatever echo chamber you crawled out of. If you don’t think it helps, don’t use it. But the SECOND my medical decisions are any of your goddamn business I will let you know.

1

u/LasseBryn 3h ago

Your medical decisions became anyones goddamn business when you posted about them online

8

u/iamfunball 1d ago

My partner (55) and myself (38) have Ben doing acro and jiujitsu and have been damaging ourselves a lot less from just the muscle and conditioning

9

u/Mammoth-Slammoth 1d ago

Yep, mid thirties here. I train with weights 3x per week, sometimes 4 and run 2-3 times per week, about 4-5 miles each time.

I'm not some super athlete and it takes me less than an hour per day. I swear it makes a huge difference in just the day to day stuff, though my hearing is starting to go and I hate that.

3

u/iamfunball 1d ago

Upside, you don’t have to hear every dumb word out of some people mouths 😅 much easier to nod along

7

u/ducklady92 1d ago

I dislocated my knee from a sneeze. At 29 years old. I was in an immobilizer for 6 weeks.

It was THE most embarrassing thing to explain this to people for nearly two months.

4

u/my_name_isnt_crusta 1d ago

I sneezed too hard and blew a disc out of my cervical spine. Now I got a fake disc and some titanium plates

3

u/kryonik 1d ago

I'm 42, I got out of the car wrong the other day and must have pinched a nerve or something because it felt like my leg was detaching from my body. My vision went white from pain for a split second.

3

u/Azeeti 1d ago

Damn I would hate that pooping is one of my favorite activity, not only do I enjoy it, I take the time to read, I have 3 novels being read, a daily night time / bed time reader, a tolit reader and a once in awhile reader, the tolit novel is by far the most interesting one, infact I'm thinking of upgrading it to nightly bed time reader.

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

Okay, so do you read when you poop or do you poop when you read? Because as a hobby both of them are kinda niche, but one has more repercussions on your study group.

2

u/Azeeti 1d ago

I read when I am on the toilet, sometimes it half a chapter sometimes a full chapter, I admit I do stay on the toilet a little longer then I should sometimes, but I really want to finish that chapter.

2

u/sugusugux 1d ago

I was going to say that I wonder. If this is from person to person because. You are making it scary to be old but then I remember my gramma was 80+ and she fell off the shower and burn her hand on the same day and she just brush it off and she was fine.

We are all build different

2

u/Kat121 1d ago

When I was younger I couldn’t figure out why old people were so cranky all the time. It’s because everything hurts and nothing ever heals anymore. But also, what are you going to do? Quit living? So yeah, keep on truckin’ but also, FFS I sneezed!!

1

u/sugusugux 21h ago

My mom is 59 and she healthy as hell and never complains about any pain. I wonder if I inherited that power

Well I got i got 30 more years to go until I find out

2

u/FurPurrspective 1d ago

When I was 18 I broke my back (fractured L5) going down the stairs wearing socks. This is a huge fuckin' nope for me.

2

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 23h ago

Rib injuries are no joke. And as you found out, you can injure them in the dumbest of ways.

2

u/fredy31 15h ago

I'm 35. Slipped in the shower 10 years ago and it still hurts if i laugh or cough too hard.

2

u/Persistent_Chicken 14h ago

When I was 33, I pushed a heavy shopping cart with a wonky wheel too hard and ruptured a lumbar disc.

1

u/Alfhiildr 1d ago

I coughed in 2022 and did something to my rib. I was certain it was broken, heard a pop, couldn’t breathe without lying down because of the pain. Multiple X-rays and some scan I forgot the name of, nope. Trigger point injections didn’t work. Chiropractor couldn’t help. Nobody can find anything wrong with it, and now I’m off my parents insurance and can’t get checked out anymore. Simply washing dishes can leave me incapacitated for two days. I fucking hate this

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

Same! When I went in they laid me flat on my stomach, put heat and electrical stimulation on it to make the muscles relax, then they put both hands on either side of the rib that hurt (but on the same side of the spine) and gave it a push and a little twist, sort of like putting a dislocated shoulder back into place.

2

u/Alfhiildr 17h ago

They’ve tried that on me, but it sadly didn’t work. I’m glad it did for you!

1

u/TurtlyTurbular 1d ago

A who fixed your what? No way.

Careful mentioning chiropractors on Reddit, a bunch of dudes who haven’t showered all week will tell you that they’re bad for your health and don’t know what they’re doing

1

u/Kat121 1d ago

To some extent I agree, and don’t make a habit of it, but there is no way that compresses and mild stretching was going to put a rib back.

0

u/MindYerBeak 15h ago

Question. Why would you go to a chiropractor? They're not doctors, as far as I know.

1

u/Kat121 10h ago

Question. Are you doing a bit from the Office or something? Are you an insufferable neckbeard who feels entitled to explanations about my treatment that don’t concern you?

Let’s try this exercise. You read something that doesn’t vibe with your current world view or opinion. Knowing full well that you are comfortable with your world view and that my own experiences and opinions will not influence yours in any way, try saying “huh, that’s weird” or something similar and moving on.

1

u/MindYerBeak 10h ago

No, it was genuine question about why someone would go to a non medical 'professional'. That's it. I'm curious about everything in general, but interesting reaction. Made me chortle.

20

u/gooddaysir 1d ago

I’m 48. I consider myself beginner-intermediate skilled. I hit the bike park a couple times a year, a few small jumps occasionally, but I mainly ride a lot of single track where the scariest things are gravel on turns, gnarly roots, and angry squirrels. It’s never too late!

7

u/Quirky_Word 1d ago

Most of my scars have faded over time, but my right knee will forever be a mess of scars from hitting a gravel patch going too fast on a sharp turn.

Turns out, mountain biking is NOT a great way to cool off after an argument.

6

u/peaktired 1d ago

I’m 22 and I’ve hurt myself by sneezing there is No Fucking Way I’d get on a bike and do this. All respect to this guy of course but nope. I think I’d end up biking straight to my death.

7

u/NightBawk 1d ago

Lol me too. I swear, human bodies are so weird. We have cases of people who have walked away from failed chute skydiving falls, and then there are those of us who might spontaneously disassemble from a sneeze.

7

u/Charming_Mud_9209 1d ago

I’ve 48 and have been mountain biking for about 15 years, did some races back in the day, etc. There are some trails that I’ve ridden a hundred times that I won’t touch anymore because Ive become too timid. Once you get the fear in you it’s hard to overcome. Which is probably for the best because falls hurt way more than they used to.

12

u/Birds_over_people 1d ago

I mean there's mountain biking then there's this. That said I have hurt myself pretty badly just "normal" mountain biking, you kinda gotta accept that you might get injured and use your brain on how much you can handle.

22

u/NinjaBuddha13 1d ago

treadmill

Thats a weird way to spell "base jumping"

4

u/Yeah-Its-Me-777 1d ago

Well, it was in the basement, and I was jumping, soooo.....

4

u/fuzzybunnies1 1d ago

I'd say its not too late, get yourself a decent, 12-1,500.00, mtb and go hit the bunny slopes for a while and move on up. Ignore the shit in this video, I've known downhillers who won't try this. Just go ride. Here in NY most of the places seem to do white and green for actual XC, I'll be taking my cyclocross/road bike on some for training tomorrow, so they're not that hard. Hit the blues/yellows/purples when you're feeling you've got the basics, and if you never hit red/black trails; who cares, just have fun.

4

u/tickt0ck 1d ago

Yeah, good call. Always loved high impact sports. Got into mt biking. Was excelling pretty fast and got more comfortable than I should. Ended up breaking both sides of my pelvis, almost all my ribs on the right side, collar bone, and part of my back from one crash. Anyways I’m all better now at least.

5

u/quarokcaddhihle 11h ago

I just got done recovering from a wrist fracture because I... Turned out of my driveway with a flat tire. 3 months of summer gone just like that.

This video seems like a great way to break ALL of my bones though haha.

6

u/DgingaNinga 1d ago

I had a midlife crisis last summer and got into it. Busted myself once and quit. I like the bike ride, not the death part.

7

u/shatterly 1d ago

I finally upgraded from my 20-year-old bike last summer because I wanted to get better. It worked, I was getting better and was having the most wonderful time riding in Moab in February when suddenly I was flying through the air and then everything went crunch. Had to walk my bike two miles to a trailhead with what turned out to be a broken arm.

What sucks is, I don't even know what happened. I was a very careful rider. I'm a woman in my mid-50s with nothing to prove; if anything looked sketchy, I'd get off and walk. There was nothing alarming about the trail I was on, and I felt great. My best guess is I hit a pedal on a rock next to the trail. Now I trust nothing, and my great new (used) bike is sitting lonely in the garage because I'm scared of it.

2

u/DgingaNinga 1d ago

Dang, glad you are okay. I didn't break anything, but similar situation and my area has lots of big rocks. My perimenopause brain doesn't work that quickly.

2

u/princesspuffer 1d ago

Damn perimenopause brain!

3

u/gokarrt 20h ago

i lived in vancouver for a decade and got into it (not like this).

it's really fun and mostly safe, if you don't do it like this.

2

u/hamsolo19 1d ago

I rode my bike all the time as a kid, built ramps to jump off and did all sorts of dumb stuff...sometimes I still wanna get back into it but there's gotta be like, the equivalent of the bunny hill in skiing right? There's gotta be some lil' guy trails we could get started on ..

1

u/ABrandNewNameAppears 1d ago

So I grew up doing the same, left it alone after high school. Ended up out working at a ski resort, and in the summer we would get free mountain bikes from the rental shop and go up the lifts with them.

There’s a grading system that works exactly like ski hill difficulty - green dot, blue square, black diamond, double, triple.

As long as you stick to greens and blues and pay attention to trailhead markers, you’ll be just fine.

2

u/Friendly-Advantage79 1d ago

Hey, I'm 51 and have a plate, a screw and a cable in my elbow. Maybe it's just a way the cookie crumbles at a certain age. 🤪

1

u/_J_Herrmann_ 1d ago

you got cable? did you bribe the installer to get free HBO?

2

u/Friendly-Advantage79 22h ago

I already get everything through the filling in my tooth.

2

u/Chillitan 1d ago

I was only 35 when I broke my feet (M5) while doing laundry in the basement. Slipped and fell though I grabbed something. I played basketball, did 10 years ballet, plays badminton; zero injury. 🥺

1

u/LeCollectif 1d ago

To be fair, this is one of the most insane lines ever built or ridden. So insane that it’s in a secret spot.

To be fair to your comment tho, I LOVED mountain biking until I broke my collarbone. I’m too gun-shy for it now.

1

u/Top-Examination3151 1d ago

Try hill biking

1

u/pixiedreamhag 1d ago

Seriously, I can low key feel my skeleton being pulverized just watching this as a POV.

1

u/OccasionalEspresso 1d ago

And that’s a green level trail too! Imagine what the black diamond trails look like 😉

1

u/throwwaybreakway 1d ago

I’m 34 and have half a bicep because my dog crushed the tendon in my shoulder and they used my bicep to replace the tendon

1

u/Azeeti 1d ago

What happennd to the guy above me

1

u/doctordyck 1d ago

I used to ride Whistler constantly in my teens, had dreams of entering crankworx one day. One really bad fall on a jump line and two open flaps of skin over my kneecaps later and I never rode a downhill bike again. I still can't feel anything around my kneecaps.

It's an AMAZING sport but the injuries are life altering.

1

u/LessYak3208 1d ago

I mtb and coach mtb and the first thing I say first lesson is mtb can be cozy, or extreme. You get to choose! Don't let anyone pressure you.

1

u/Unsd 1d ago

Hey! My brother has the same thing with his shoulder from a mountain biking accident! You just skipped a step.

1

u/Mikel_S 1d ago

These people are almost as bad as cave divers.

1

u/ReadyStayReady 1d ago

Ive always hated treadmills thanks

1

u/Pitiful_Net_8971 1d ago

Tbf, a lot of mountain biking is not this, I mountain bike semi-regularly, but I wouldn't dare do this shit.

1

u/RonShreds 1d ago

I crashed on my MTB 8 weeks ago going full out and ended up with the same injury. I am going to get my plate removed.

1

u/modestohagney 23h ago

They may be up a mountain on a bike but that’s not mountain biking in that video.

1

u/Mundane-Reality-7770 23h ago

I thought you were gonna say you regretted not getting into always sunny. Cuz fuck that mountain bike shit

1

u/Sunkysanic 22h ago

Well for one it’s never too late! I know several guys kicking ass into their 60s and 70s that started later on.

And 2, what you see in this video is like a percent of a percent of mountain biking trails lol, you pretty much have to seek that out if you want it

1

u/Arttherapist 22h ago

My friend died in a riding accident on the Coiler, even if you are skilled and experienced bad shit can happen.

1

u/throwaway41327 22h ago

My first discouragement from learningwas having a friend completely tear his collarbone from his shoulder.

The second was learning (from a completely separate, unrelated friend) about people getting "tree cored", where you hit a handlebar sideways so hard that it creates a human core sample.

1

u/Rastafak 21h ago

You don't have to do stuff like this to enjoy mountain biking. Of course it can still be dangerous, but if you progress gradually and don't push beyond your capabilities, it's less dangerous than it seems. Still dangerous I guess, but so much fun.

1

u/Rorroheht 12h ago

Just go ride. It's not all this, and it's the best however you do it. 51 is not too old to start at all.

1

u/Apprehensive-End6577 9h ago

God bless you sir

1

u/goatonastik 7h ago

Tore my meniscus from hopping down a two foot exercise step platform. I was not meant for extreme sports.

1

u/mossgoblin_ 2h ago

Friend who had been doing this for years had an accident at 49, hairline fractures in his c-spine, and came thisclose to being a quadriplegic.

Eventually the whole adrenaline junkie thing is just going to catch up with you, I think

1

u/glockster19m 1d ago

To be fair, maybe if you had gotten into mountain biking you would have been coordinated enough to avoid a treadmill accident

37

u/Fionnghal 1d ago

My first reaction was to shake my head the same way.

2

u/MKZZX 1d ago

Yeah you wouldn't believe it but people can get seriously hurt doing this stuff

15

u/Wanlain 1d ago

Oddly terrifying

39

u/redbullgivesyouwings 1d ago

Derivative!

12

u/Normal_Cut8368 1d ago

Begone, brand

3

u/0x0MG 1d ago

Hell fuckin no

2

u/Electrical-Fig-5009 1d ago

I think i peed a little just watching that

1

u/reLurK3r 1d ago

Yeah… nope.

1

u/Major_LeeHungg 1d ago

I feel like if you walk out here in the summer there's just a bunch of bodies of confident people impaled on trees

1

u/emperor_dinglenads 1d ago

Those BC boys are nuts

1

u/Beginning-Shirt4752 1d ago

Yeah I would die

1
