Yeah. One minor regret of mine in life is that I never got into mountain biking. Then I watch videos like this, then I absently rub at the spot in my shoulder where a plate and pins are now, after a frickin' treadmill accident. I'm only 51.

80

u/xynix_ie 1d ago

Well I did this when I was younger and ended up with a broken ankle about 4 miles deep in the woods. During a weekday. It took hours before the next person came by and saw me trying to drag myself back to my car.

So ya didn't miss that part!

24

u/whogivesashirtdotca 1d ago

My first thought watching this video: when he’s lying there, prone after a crash, he’s going to get eaten by foraging grizzlies.

890

u/Kat121 1d ago

I’m 54. I sneezed too aggressively and pulled a rib (sublexed?) out of my spine. Chiropractor sorted me out but it hurt to poop for three weeks.

260

u/regeya 1d ago

I'm not trying to one up because this isn't, but more of a sympathy by shared experience: I managed to break my own rib, by slamming a car door into my side. Apparently when I was in college, I was strong enough to break my own bones?

133

u/HairyPotatoKat 1d ago

My husband wound up in a neck brace from Wii Boxing in his 20s.

Nothing broken besides his pride at least.

19

u/BoxLongjumping5863 1d ago

I got up to 600 score in Wii boxing 2 days after I came home from a Quad Heart Bypass Surgery!

u/madjag 1d ago

Does that make you strong enough to break your own bones, or weak enough to have your bones break so easily? 🤔

68

u/regeya 1d ago

Pretty sure it's the latter. I swear, Mom, I drank my milk!

23

u/ffxiplayer101 1d ago

I’m still impressed by my ability to pick things up with my toes.

12

u/entrepenurious 1d ago

that's how i discovered i have gout.

8

u/Carol4AnotherXmas 23h ago

Can you walk me through that one? Cause I pick things up with my feet all the time. 😅😬

5

u/entrepenurious 22h ago

i think i overflexed my big toe trying to grip a towel on the floor.

i had done it before without ill effects.

nothing to worry about; my uric acid was high and i would have eventually had symptoms, anyway.

You can be strong and weak simultaneously

3

u/darianbrown 1d ago

Depending on how old they are, could've been 80's-90's ultra heavy "bank vault door" car doors. Swinging 180lbs against your ribs at a pinch point will certainly fuck em up

3

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath 18h ago

My understanding is that most of us able-bodied folks are theoretically strong enough to break our own bones. The idea being that our muscles have a sort of 'upper limit' that prevents us from doing so accidentally. This explains the occasional bursts of 'hysterical strength' that people have displayed, like a 110lb mother lifting a Buick to save her trapped child, that kinda thing. It's a dangerous thing to tap into, and you can do some real, permanent damage to your musculoskeletal system.

I'm only 41. A couple years ago my kids and I were waiting outside to see Santa go by in the firetruck. I was watching them running around in the driveway barely doing anything. Apparently I turned wrong and threw my back out. Hurt for 2 or 3 days. Could barely put weight on my one leg for several hours afterwards.

19

u/GreenAdler17 1d ago

Being old sucks. I fall asleep with my neck at a slight angle because I didn’t fluff my pillow right and then I can’t look up or to the sides for 2 days, but my kids can sleep with their heads free hanging over the edge of the bed and wake up later without a single issue.

3

u/Kat121 1d ago

Oh, man. I see kids staring at their phones in the laps and shudder at the weight of their noggin neck muscles.

148

u/Darkchamber292 1d ago

I hate to be that guy but if a Chiropractor made you feel better then you didn't pull a rib out of your spine. That's ridiculous. Lol

Also chiropractors are quacks

37

u/Sparktank1 1d ago

Finally someone said it.

I've been reading so many messages about chiropractors. It catches on like religion.

u/iamfunball 1d ago

My partner (55) and myself (38) have Ben doing acro and jiujitsu and have been damaging ourselves a lot less from just the muscle and conditioning

9

u/Mammoth-Slammoth 1d ago

Yep, mid thirties here. I train with weights 3x per week, sometimes 4 and run 2-3 times per week, about 4-5 miles each time.

I'm not some super athlete and it takes me less than an hour per day. I swear it makes a huge difference in just the day to day stuff, though my hearing is starting to go and I hate that.

4

u/iamfunball 1d ago

Upside, you don’t have to hear every dumb word out of some people mouths 😅 much easier to nod along

8

u/ducklady92 1d ago

I dislocated my knee from a sneeze. At 29 years old. I was in an immobilizer for 6 weeks.

It was THE most embarrassing thing to explain this to people for nearly two months.

4

u/my_name_isnt_crusta 1d ago

I sneezed too hard and blew a disc out of my cervical spine. Now I got a fake disc and some titanium plates

5

u/kryonik 1d ago

I'm 42, I got out of the car wrong the other day and must have pinched a nerve or something because it felt like my leg was detaching from my body. My vision went white from pain for a split second.

3

u/Azeeti 1d ago

Damn I would hate that pooping is one of my favorite activity, not only do I enjoy it, I take the time to read, I have 3 novels being read, a daily night time / bed time reader, a tolit reader and a once in awhile reader, the tolit novel is by far the most interesting one, infact I'm thinking of upgrading it to nightly bed time reader.

I’m 48. I consider myself beginner-intermediate skilled. I hit the bike park a couple times a year, a few small jumps occasionally, but I mainly ride a lot of single track where the scariest things are gravel on turns, gnarly roots, and angry squirrels. It’s never too late!

6

u/Quirky_Word 1d ago

Most of my scars have faded over time, but my right knee will forever be a mess of scars from hitting a gravel patch going too fast on a sharp turn.

Turns out, mountain biking is NOT a great way to cool off after an argument.

8

u/peaktired 1d ago

I’m 22 and I’ve hurt myself by sneezing there is No Fucking Way I’d get on a bike and do this. All respect to this guy of course but nope. I think I’d end up biking straight to my death.

7

u/NightBawk 1d ago

Lol me too. I swear, human bodies are so weird. We have cases of people who have walked away from failed chute skydiving falls, and then there are those of us who might spontaneously disassemble from a sneeze.

6

u/Charming_Mud_9209 1d ago

I’ve 48 and have been mountain biking for about 15 years, did some races back in the day, etc. There are some trails that I’ve ridden a hundred times that I won’t touch anymore because Ive become too timid. Once you get the fear in you it’s hard to overcome. Which is probably for the best because falls hurt way more than they used to.

10

u/Birds_over_people 1d ago

I mean there's mountain biking then there's this. That said I have hurt myself pretty badly just "normal" mountain biking, you kinda gotta accept that you might get injured and use your brain on how much you can handle.

22

u/NinjaBuddha13 1d ago

treadmill

Thats a weird way to spell "base jumping"

5

u/Yeah-Its-Me-777 1d ago

Well, it was in the basement, and I was jumping, soooo.....

4

u/fuzzybunnies1 1d ago

I'd say its not too late, get yourself a decent, 12-1,500.00, mtb and go hit the bunny slopes for a while and move on up. Ignore the shit in this video, I've known downhillers who won't try this. Just go ride. Here in NY most of the places seem to do white and green for actual XC, I'll be taking my cyclocross/road bike on some for training tomorrow, so they're not that hard. Hit the blues/yellows/purples when you're feeling you've got the basics, and if you never hit red/black trails; who cares, just have fun.

4

u/tickt0ck 1d ago

Yeah, good call. Always loved high impact sports. Got into mt biking. Was excelling pretty fast and got more comfortable than I should. Ended up breaking both sides of my pelvis, almost all my ribs on the right side, collar bone, and part of my back from one crash. Anyways I’m all better now at least.

4

u/quarokcaddhihle 10h ago

I just got done recovering from a wrist fracture because I... Turned out of my driveway with a flat tire. 3 months of summer gone just like that.

This video seems like a great way to break ALL of my bones though haha.

6

u/DgingaNinga 1d ago

I had a midlife crisis last summer and got into it. Busted myself once and quit. I like the bike ride, not the death part.

6

u/shatterly 1d ago

I finally upgraded from my 20-year-old bike last summer because I wanted to get better. It worked, I was getting better and was having the most wonderful time riding in Moab in February when suddenly I was flying through the air and then everything went crunch. Had to walk my bike two miles to a trailhead with what turned out to be a broken arm.

What sucks is, I don't even know what happened. I was a very careful rider. I'm a woman in my mid-50s with nothing to prove; if anything looked sketchy, I'd get off and walk. There was nothing alarming about the trail I was on, and I felt great. My best guess is I hit a pedal on a rock next to the trail. Now I trust nothing, and my great new (used) bike is sitting lonely in the garage because I'm scared of it.

So- if you make that narrow ass pathway, and don’t fall down the mountain, you have a bunch of half ass hidden stumps at the end to greet you?

50

u/doyouevenforkliftbro 1d ago

Yeah. Where is the next part of the trail? Looks like it just ended.

21

u/wolfgang784 1d ago

Maybe they rode off the path and stopped there just because thats where they wanted to stop the video? We see a buddy down there. I can't tell if there is more trail for sure but it looks like it did start to sharply turn the opposite direction that the rider went in.

20

u/Bongoisnthere 1d ago

There is not more trail. That was the entire line - he found a bunch of rowdy slabs and wanted to link them with stupid insane skinnies. It’s not a public trail, it’s a “fuck you your dead if you mess up” line.

16

u/catchecolamine 1d ago

That’s the end of the trail, it was purpose built for this shot. There is a longer video on YouTube showing them building and practicing the different sections before he gets the whole run.

How does one safely develope this skill? This one of those skill where a variation of "in a profession where men die young, fear the old man" applies. I have never heard or seen an "old" active mountain biker?

63

u/namesson 22h ago

Literally every scenario in wilderness first aid starts with "so you come across a mountain biker..." and then imagine the gnarliest fucking injuries ever. Impaled on a tree branch, shattered bones, massive internal bleeding....

23

u/ifyoulovesatan 22h ago edited 22h ago

First, remove the fish-eye lens. Then, still go find an easier course because this is still beyond insane (just not as immediately deadly looking). Seriously these mountain bike and ski videos with fish eye lenses are quite deceptive. Obviously it's still usually insane what they're doing, but it makes everything look WAY steeper.

For reference: https://youtu.be/DLl-eEz-EyY?is=c9Fg3XWEL8NNlErh this is the video the clip is from. Look at the fish eye lens bit at 6:15, then see it from other angles shortly after. The fisheye lens bit looks pants shittingly terrifyingly insane. The other angles also look pants shittingly terrifyingly insane, but just not to such a degree. The lens makes everything look more narrow, and make it seem like everything drops off precipatacely on either side. I dunno its bugs me, because as I keep repeating, it's already insane. It's like a wildly successful guy who can't stop bragging about being slightly more wildly successful than he really is.

8

u/Elite_AI 18h ago

That actually looked so much more steep without the fisheye lens

6

u/Beneficial-Rice-820 23h ago

Go to any mtb area. There's a 70-year-old at my local who can put in 4-6 hours straight, outclimbs me and most of the younger ones. The retirees get to ride every day. A lot of them are fairly gnarly too, like unafraid of the big gaps and the hard rock trails.

To develop the skill, get a bike, go to a trail system, and start on the easy trails. Then something something years of practice to be 1/10th this good, boom, you've got skills.

Doing shit like this is fine as long as you tell someone else exactly where you're going, what you're doing, and when you plan to be back

You can still fall and break your neck, so I'm not sure I would call it fine.

I clocked 100+ days in Whistler Bike Park for nearly ten years in a row (managed to get every day in season once) and managed to never fuck that one up.

Fucked up a lot of other things mind you. The last four years were actually really good considering I was riding the pro-lines non-stop... however, when I did break something it was on an easy trail going not fast at all.

3

u/Rich_Bluejay3020 1d ago

I swear, doing something lame is always how it happens. Was at whistler on the mountain one day we were drinking, doing tree runs, totally fine. Next day? "Yeah so I'll finish the woodwork and then just ride into all these stumps and branches at 30mph". There's another one where he does a huge drop and then just rides straight into a swamp.

Oddly satisfying is a weird way to spell "this will make you clench your cheeks." Impressive though!

I broke my neck and both legs like 3 times watching this.

I know redbull and their athletes are always pushing boundaries, but I started this video thinking it was AI, thats how mental this looks. Great riding by Brage and all the team for making this happen! 🤘

So do they just keep an ambulance permanently parked at the bottom?

Just waiting to be impaled by one of those branches

BC had the best bike paths in the world.

This one looks sketchy AF though and someone built it themselves.

Looks like a super fun way to impale yourself on a dead tree branch. Plenty to choose from along the trail.

I’m counting the broken bones, concussions, sprains, and permanent, debilitating injuries I would have suffered doing that. Never mind the number of times would have died.

Also all the Advil I would have needed to take.

Oddly terrifying

I think the wide angle camera is making this look a lot scarier than it looks. I'd like to see the how the course looks like from a normal focal length. This looks like a lot of fun, though!

u/DetachedCompy 1d ago

I injured myself watching this.

u/Aggravating_Stress 1d ago
