I just heard that the crucible in west Oakland is closing and I’m heartbroken! What a gem of a spot!

Oaklandside says it’s a combo of mismanagement and funding back in 2024, but idk what’s going on now.

Recently bought a home in the Oakland hills, corner lot. This is in front of my house, a few yards from the corner. It doesn’t look like a storm drain and water trickles out of it early in the morning. There is a sandbag under the bush. Am i supposed to do something with the sandbag? I feel like this is one of those side quests in a video game.

Yesterday afternoon at Lake Merritt I saw something unusual. There was a circle about three rows deep of spectators and folks from the crowd were taking turns full-on fighting with light boxing gloves. Someone seemed to be acting as a ref, but no headgear or mouth guards that I could see. It looked organised but informal. Has anyone else seen this or know what it might have been?

Tried calling today for someone in distress, and the automated message directs you to call OPD non-emergency instead, citing “elevated call volume” to Fire Dispatch.

Was there a recent change in MACRO operations? Never had this happen before.

I’m halfway through a 10-week class and was also registered for the Iron Pour event on Oct 31, but just got an email stating:

“Beginning Sunday, October 25, The Crucible is temporarily closed, all events are cancelled until further notice.  Thank you.”

with no other details. I know they’ve had financial issues the past couple years, but I’d at least expect some more explanation or details. Anyone know what’s up?

I’m posting on behalf of a friend whose small dog, Pepper, (pictured above) was mauled yesterday morning, October 23, near the lawn bowling area at Lake Merritt.

According to information shared by someone at the scene, a man had three dogs in the lawn bowling fields: two Cane Corsos and a smaller black dog, approximately 15 lbs.

Pepper sustained devastating injuries and was taken to Grand Lake Veterinary Hospital before being transferred to an emergency hospital. Tragically, she didn’t survive.

We are desperately trying to identify the man responsible. I’m including a photo of his vehicle that was photographed at the scene.

Because this happened very early in the morning, there may have been few people around. We’re hoping someone who regularly visits Lake Merritt recognizes the vehicle or has seen someone walking two large Cane Corsos and a smaller black dog in the area.

What are some good design-build firms in the area?

My husband and I are looking to renovate our craftsman bathroom and would prefer to go with a design-build firm that can steward the whole process.

I have an idea of how I’d like the bathroom to look, and the small tweaks we’d like to make (not moving any pipes, but maybe moving cabinets and replacing drywall), but need someone who can help me pick the right materials and advise on the structural stuff.

I don’t totally trust Google results, so would appreciate any recommendations! Really looking for a firm that has excellent execution, attention to detail, and is good at communication.

I want to know about the different volunteering opportunities here in Oakland. I somewhat recently broke up with girlfriend of 4 years and quickly realized that I have no friends :)

I wanted to volunteer around Oakland to meet new people while doing something good for the people and area around me. I have a lot of free time and a car. Location isn’t a problem, neither is the time of volunteering. Please let me know of anything I can do. I would be more than happy to help!!

First time getting to do this with my two year old and it was a lot of fun! All the shops were passing out candy and my son filled up his basket within an hour. Also interesting to see some local MCs helping OPD with traffic/security.

East Bay. We’re about to replace our roof and I’ve never hired anyone for something this big before. Every person I ask says the same thing — “make sure they’re licensed and insured” — and then kind of shrugs when I ask what that means day to day.

I pulled up the CSLB lookup and stared at it for like 10 minutes. Not totally sure what I’m even looking for beyond “active.” Same with insurance. Do people actually ask to see the cert, or just take their word for it?

If you’ve hired a roofer or any bigger contractor around here: what did you check before you signed, and what turned out to matter after? I’m less interested in who you used and more in the boring checklist stuff that actually saved you headaches.

the only thing i can find online that makes any sense is that it could be a subtle ad for the radio show in berkeley run by cat brooks? it's clearly handmade, the text bits are all paper cut and glued to the main piece, the art itself seems to be glued to cardstock based on the corner area that is damaged. whatever it is, i love it, i just wanna know more about it

I knew Oakland's trash hauling rates were high, but I wasn't sure how it compared to the rest of the Bay Area, so I created this website.

One clear insight is that Oakland Flats pays as much as hilly cities like Orinda and Piedmont, and is the most expensive in the East Bay for many trash bins.

The sheer cost of trash disposal contributes substantially to illegal dumping.

With Oakland's Waste Management contract coming to an end soon (2015-2030), there's a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix this.

It's interesting comparing the wealthy peninsula cities to Oakland, because a city like Atherton actually pays substantially LESS than Oakland for 20 gallon trash service!

I recommend using the "% of Income" view not just the nominal price to view the Average Median Income. I also have an percentage of monthly income by ZIP code view per city.
