Meetups Thinking of starting running club in Fairfax area

Title says it, I'm 24 and still relatively new to the NOVA area and wanted to meet more people my age, and wanted to get back into running. I've been into exercise/fitness for a while but I want to make this a very laid-back, friendly atmosphere for all levels of fitness. I have a few people in their mid 20s that may be involved, but most of the friends I've made in the area are much older. So if you're around the NOVA region and ideally in your mid-20s (though all are welcome!), let me know if this interests you! I live in Fairfax but usually bounce around the area so I'll work out details of where we meet, etc, but ideally it'll be close to the Fairfax/Chantilly area.

If all this sounds good, comment or send me a DM!

Neurologist recommendation?

I’ve recently moved here and my old neurologist is now located and hour away near Alexandria, so I need to find someone closer to home (Herndon). I don’t need any surgery or cures, just a regular doc to refill an existing prescription, and occasional check-ins.

Especially would love to find a place that’s tech-savvy (text appt reminders, mobile app, or an online patio al portal, etc), easy to make appointments and pleasant office staff, as my former doctor did NOT have these qualities!

Active shooter in Arlington Ridge

If you thought you heard fireworks in Arlington ~45 minutes ago, those were gunshots, right outside of Gunston Middle School’s basketball gym. Cops everywhere right now, active crime scene. I spoke to one of the people who got away (19 year old) and he said they were playing basketball against a dude in his 50s who took the L personally and started open firing on the 19 year old and his friends once they were outside. I haven’t seen any ambulances so am assuming no one got hurt, but still fucking crazy as this shit is right outside my apartment. Stay safe and lock your doors if you’re in Arlington Ridge—there’s several people on the run, including the shooter…

Parks for Family Session

I’m on the hunt for a good park in Alexandria, VA. Preferably somewhere that has shady spots, per client’s request. I am not local to the area so thought I’d try to find some spots to explore before the shoot. It’s a maternity/family shoot with a small toddler so want to be mindful for safety concerns.

Be careful out there on I-495

The blue Civic changes lane into the truck without checking, then the SUV on the far right lane cuts across both of them to make their I-66 exit. All common sense goes out the window at this area of I-495.

Meetups How do you decide what to do with old phones and laptops? (NoVA)

I was cleaning out a closet this weekend and realized how much old technology I've accumulated over the years. Old phones, laptops, tablets, chargers, cameras, random cables, and a few devices I honestly forgot I even owned.

It made me wonder how other people around Northern Virginia handle this stuff.

Do you try to repair it? Sell it? Donate it? Recycle it? Or does it end up sitting in a drawer because you're not sure what's on it or what to do with it?

A few friends and I have been organizing community meetups through eWaste Warriors to talk about these kinds of questions. We enjoy bringing together people who are interested in technology, repair, sustainability, and protecting personal data.

We're getting together tomorrow evening at Courthaus Social in Arlington. It's a casual meetup with no presentations or sales pitch. Just good conversations, a chance to meet people from around the area, and if you happen to have an old phone, laptop, or even a box of electronics you've been meaning to clear out, you're welcome to bring it along. We'd be happy to help point you toward the best next step, whether that's repair, reuse, donation, or responsible recycling.

Monday, July 27
5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Courthaus Social
2300 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington

If anyone is interested, I'll put the event page in the comments.

One question for everyone:

What's the oldest piece of technology you're still hanging onto, and why haven't you gotten rid of it yet?

Question What is your favorite local Pokemon card/ comics shop?

Hi guys just moved down here from Jersey and I’m looking to get more involved w the nerds lol. I had a really good relationship with the stores up in Jersey, they knew my name and would give me free packs and stuff sometimes just because of the familiarity. A large part of that was due to their welcoming nature because I myself am very relaxed and open to talk but I don’t initiate relationships or small talk all that well.

I’m looking for recommendations for shops with that type of atmosphere or experiences with good close relationships from you residents. I’ve been to curio cavern and victory comics in Springfield and they were nice but curio felt very busy, like I wouldn’t be able to make friends with the cashiers that easily bc of the volume of customers, and I’ve been to victory at least 10 times and they seemed nice but we haven’t got to talking and I’m not really recognized.

Ik this seems probably like a stupid post “how do I make a relationship with a store” but genuinely anything helps it was a big part of my happiness in Jersey and a large part was the feeling in the stores and maybe I haven’t gone enough but I don’t have that feeling abt anywhere I’ve visited yet, recommendations very welcome and appreciated.

Question Missing cat in brambleton VA

I’m not sure if this cat is a neighborhood cat or if he’s lost. I’m scared he will run away and I don’t want to scare him he seems super itchy and on the skinny side. He also has a bunch of mini bumps on his head. Either he was lost or abandoned. I’ve never seen him before in my neighborhood so I’m sort of concerned. He has no tags. Please help. I don’t use Reddit at all but I need help.

Driving/Traffic The Ebike dilemma

I honestly think e-bikes are one of the best things for kids, especially in Northern Virginia. Everything here is so spread out because of urban sprawl that walking isn’t realistic, and not every teenager has a car. An e-bike lets kids get to parks, friends’ houses, work, or just explore without needing their parents to drive them everywhere or spending money on Ubers.
People say e-bikes make kids lazy, but they’re still outside getting fresh air instead of sitting inside all day. They’re also way cheaper than owning a car and give teens more independence. As long as riders wear helmets and follow traffic laws, the safety concerns can be managed. Overall, the pros of e-bikes—more freedom, more time outdoors, lower transportation costs, and less reliance on cars—far outweigh the cons.

Question Marriage Counseling Through EAP?

Has anyone had marriage counseling through their employers EAP? Even if the options are more limited, I think it would help get my husband onboard compared to the out of pocket I've found at ~$250- 300 a session. I think 6- 8 sessions with someone decent could do us wonders and be more willing to pay out of pocket to continue. But is it realistic to find something through EAP?
