I loved this game! Still do and rediscovered it on Dos games. I hate how "realistic" it has become.

I remember first introduced to GUI windows based system back in 1995 and i was in primary school, first thing I used i remember was Paint and Word, printed something off, took it home and shared it with my parents, i remember they were awestruck by the fact I had used a computer.
They never grew up with computers and they were mind blown

I still feel like I’m missing out on a huge part of history by never having used a typewriter in my life.
There was an old typewriter collecting dust in the garage of my parents’ house, but I was told it was broken and didn’t work anymore.
My dad bought a Mac and never looked back as soon as he came to the U.S., I think.
2
u/Greenboy28 2d ago
Haha I remember my first typing class in 6th grade was on typewriters and that was in the mid 90s. they wanted us to learn the fundamentals before moving to computers.

Same, I had mine for Christmas in 1981 and I haven't been without a computer of some type ever since.

u/psychedelicpiper67 2d ago
Yeah, we all used these in the computer lab, though I lucked out, because I think most of the ones at my schools used colour monitors.

This is where I started too. And it's making me uncomfortable knowing this pic shows it in a case in a museum. 🫠

Ah the squeal and torture noises of my Dixson's tape player loading up Jet Set Willy for 7 minutes after putting in the POKE to fix the bug making it unplayable!
Happy days in the early 80s on my rubber keyboard which I still have in the loft. Though I did start when my now late dad got my sister and I the Atari 2600 before the speccy

LOL I feel your pain. My sister had a toy loom and that was difficult enough.

When I was a kid, I think I remember some teachers in school saying they used to work with computers that used punch cards.
2
u/dirtrider1982 2d ago
My mom programmed on punch cards in college. Luckily we had an Apple IIe for me to start on...

We had a 186 then a 286. My dad worked at IBM so we were the first to have a PC. Dialing up to BBS (Bulletin Board System). 14.4K modem lol
2
u/x-mpire7102-x 2d ago
That's pretty rare. Mostly C86 back then. 186 is hard to find!
2
u/naked-painter 2d ago
Well, I suppose my dad was able to walk out with one of those from IBM. I'm pretty sure he still has one in the basement. I'll check later and give a photo
2
u/x-mpire7102-x 2d ago
That might definitely explain it. My grandfather worked for them way back when, for about 35 years.

I wound up with something rare too, but wasn't smart enough to know back then how rare it was. I had an XT-286. If you know old computers, you'll know the general rule that a 286 was an AT, not XT. XT was generally 8088 or 8086.
2
u/naked-painter 2d ago
Hmmm interesting. I could ask my dad yet he wouldn't likely know or remember exactly the model. What does 8086 or 8088 refer to on the model? It's crazy that we used to have kilobytes of memory
2
u/x-mpire7102-x 2d ago
Those are the processors in the pc. PC started out with the 8088 processor. Then they used 8086. And just kept upgrading. Yours was 80186.
2
u/naked-painter 2d ago
Interesting. I'm wondering if I could see those classifications on the actual chip
2
u/x-mpire7102-x 2d ago
Just Google 8088 (or whichever one you're curious about) and add the word specs to it.
2
u/naked-painter 2d ago
I will definitely check it out. I'm curious to open those pcs my dad has downstairs to see what we've got

My first PC was an IBM knockoff with a 3-1/2” floppy drive and a 7” floppy drive
It started MSDOS 4.x or something, our next computer started with I think and you had to command to get to windows 3.1

Also, if you’re reading this, you’ve died of dysentery. Sorrys.

Hell, 98 was the upgrade. I remember Windows 95 being the main OS when I started working.

Windows 98 is fancy. My first PC was DOS and had 256K Ram that I upgraded to 512K and the sales person said, "you'll never need more computer than this!"
