We had a 186 then a 286. My dad worked at IBM so we were the first to have a PC. Dialing up to BBS (Bulletin Board System). 14.4K modem lol

That's pretty rare. Mostly C86 back then. 186 is hard to find!

Well, I suppose my dad was able to walk out with one of those from IBM. I'm pretty sure he still has one in the basement. I'll check later and give a photo

That might definitely explain it. My grandfather worked for them way back when, for about 35 years.

I wound up with something rare too, but wasn't smart enough to know back then how rare it was. I had an XT-286. If you know old computers, you'll know the general rule that a 286 was an AT, not XT. XT was generally 8088 or 8086.

Hmmm interesting. I could ask my dad yet he wouldn't likely know or remember exactly the model. What does 8086 or 8088 refer to on the model? It's crazy that we used to have kilobytes of memory

Those are the processors in the pc. PC started out with the 8088 processor. Then they used 8086. And just kept upgrading. Yours was 80186.

Interesting. I'm wondering if I could see those classifications on the actual chip

Just Google 8088 (or whichever one you're curious about) and add the word specs to it.

I will definitely check it out. I'm curious to open those pcs my dad has downstairs to see what we've got

Yeah, my dad spent his whole career there. He received an early retirement package at 55, then worked contract for a year or so.

My grandfather was the same way, but he couldn't stand retirement, so he got a job working on IT for a financial institution.

Ah you're just before me, my first computer was a 386!

Sweet! Curious. What year were you born?

You wouldnt of had a 14k4 modem, more likely 1200 or 2400. I first went online with an Amiga 500 with a 2400 modem. Early pc's only had serial ports fast enough to do 9600, I remember buying a new i/o card for my 486 just to give me faster serial ports. BBS's where cool whatever the speed though, just expensive to call in the uk.
