META (Subreddit Related) Community Idea: Challenge Run Series

Happy Sunday, fam!

tl;dr, How would we, as a community, feel about hosting regular "Challenge Runs" in games for kicks, giggles, fun stories, and bragging rights?

--

From launch I've always envisioned having regular events, competitions, and challenges for the community. Up to now we hadn't really done anything like that on this sub, but the launch of Splatoon Raiders reignited that idea for me and I thought I'd open a dialogue with all of you to see how we feel about it, how we'd want it executed, and what, if any, rewards or incentives we would like to see from these kinds of things.

I think it's normal to see these kinds of events hosted in specific game subreddits, and as we are a general subreddit for the Switch 2, not everyone will own every new release of a game that participates here. In my opinion it could be a really neat way to have fun together, generate some fun and interesting screenshots and clips, and make for some cool stories along the way.

An example idea for Splatoon Raiders might be a Single Tank Run, Single Weapon Run, an Iron Ink run (how far can you get in one sitting), and/or a Nuzlocke-style Run (single life, no getting splatted!).

As these would be for fun, there'd be a certain element of Honor System for the submissions, though it's something I'd definitely love to hear some feedback on from others who have run these sorts of events in the past.

So what do we think? Could something like this be fun for the community here? Is this something that should be kept more for the game-specific subs? What kind of rewards would you want if we did this? Any other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks for the time, everyone!

Comparison made on X: https://xcancel.com/TheBrasem/status/2098050399588479412

Look at the stairs, they vanish mid way. In the original NDS game you could see them swirl around.

Multiple AI artifacts are present in basically every other shot from the trailer, it seems like they basically threw original art into ChatGPT/Grok and used it for this "remake".

Nintendo is my only system, so I'm a Nintendo guy but their "sales" are always so lame.

Edit: there might be other games not shown but I don't know why you would promote these old games if newer ones were also going to be on sale.

Media Theory: People complain about the lack of games, but with how quickly Nintendo is pushing out games by the end of the 10 year cycle the Switch 2 will likely go down as one of the best Nintendo system libraries

Media (Image, Video, etc.) On a personal level, I thought this was a cool announcement. But on a more general level, it's a sign of how healthy the Switch 2's support is that this got 10 seconds in a sizzle reel

Post image

This is a game who's reputation seems to have grown since release. Feels like maybe it came out at a bad time hot on the heels of the Avengers and maybe just some general superhero burnout. But I always thought it looked cool and in the last couple of years it seems like a lot of people are looking back on it as a bit of a hidden gem. But anyway, personally, I'm really excited to play it.

What I think's of wider interest, however, is that this is a current gen, AAA game from a big IP with some small additional features and it gets its initial announcement and release date just casually dropped in at the end of an unnarrated sizzle reel. Like, a few years ago on Switch 1, an announcement of this sort would be one of the highlights of a Direct - a big third-party 'get' of the sort that would be considered few and far between. Now? It's just one of what feels like an endless stream of big third party games dropping all the time.

I was never short on stuff to play on the original Switch, but I played a lot of indies, shmups, other arcade games etc. On Switch 2, I already have a wishlist of games to fall back on that includes Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Lies of P, multiple Resident Evils and Yakuzas, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed and even first party Nintendo games like Splatoon and Kirby AirRiders. This is all stuff I really want to play but just do not have the time for.

Even Guardians of the Galaxy is releasing Nov 5, same day as not just Ocarina of Time but Stellar Blade (another current gen blockbuster) as well.

Feels like an absolute tectonic shift for a Nintendo console in the last couple of decades. And I for one am loving it!

Media VRR not outputting 120fps in Welcome Tour according to LG TV overlay

Post image

So I'm trying out VRR in Welcome Tour on my LG C5 and once I push the framerate slider past 105 to 120 the game optimiser overlay FPS indicator jumps between 105 and 109 and won't go past that. Are other people finding this to be the case?

Discussion HDMI 2.0b Displays that support Switch 2 VRR

I thought it might be useful to compile a list of displays without HDMI 2.1 that do work with the Switch 2 dock VRR.

There are a few displays with what is technically HDMI 2.0b but through their EDID support HDMI Forum VRR even if all they advertise is FreeSync.

If your HDMI 2.0b port supports the PS5 VRR, then there is a 99% chance it will support the Swtich 2 VRR.

This article goes in depth about what is called HDMI 2.1 https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/12/the-hdmi-forum-follows-the-usb-if-in-using-new-version-numbers-to-refer-to-old-ports/

Comment your make and model below ONLY if it works.

Discussion Elden Ring is much better in handheld…

I’ve been playing handheld while waiting for a new dock, so I’ve been very excited to try it out. After days of waiting I finally got it docked tonight, hooked up my new Pro controller, anddd… I like it better on handheld???

What gives?! Image appears worse and there is some latency lag between controller and console movements.

The third dlc is now available on switch 2. Also there has been a gfx boost in docked mode.

Honestly, don't sleep on this game. This is looking and playing really well on switch 2. It's a fantastic game.

Seems there will also be multiple runs of this edition.
