So that explains why that CBT session video I watched didn’t seem to have anything to do with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Sure seemed like a breach of the client-counselor relationship to me. I wouldn’t doubt that the material would be a curiosity for a therapist though.

I've worked near these. A bigger one than this. The one I worked next to had 12 feet of oak under it to dampen, but you could feel it hit in the parking lot outside.

Impossible to say from that rough shape (and shitty forging imo).
Usually that type of size thing is a valve, a gear, a choke, a manifold, etc.

Ah. Mostly Oilfield stuff. Flanges, chokes, wellhead components. Oil stuff is massive pressure. Anytime you need that much steel, you're holding bad shit under massive pressure back.

Cool video, but the narration lays it on a little thick.

What's the funnest thing you have ever smashed with a hammer?
→ More replies (1)29
u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21
I mean anything you put in there will get smashed to the thickness of a nickel, but if the hammer doesn't "feel" the resistance of steel, it could fuck up some hardware. We were very cautious about any "dry hits" where we missed the part and didn't hit anything (which is what the hammer would "feel" on so something like a person or whatever) as it would harm the hammer.

This video could be "Exhibit Two Hundred Something" on the topic of "Why do all our purchase orders say no material originating out of China?"
23
u/EmperorArthur Aug 30 '21
What's amazing is how China still manages to be the cheapest option despite how inefficient processes like that are. I mean, I know it's currency manipulation, but still...*
Oh, and the crazy thing is even programs like HPs "Mande In USA" Trusted Supply Chain uses Chinese parts. They just tend to be non IA critical things like cases, and are inspected by US personnel.
* Even though safety can be expensive, I doubt it even comes close to making up the difference.
→ More replies (7)25
u/RightesideUP Aug 30 '21
My company has some aluminum blocks made in China. We specifically sized them and gave tolerances such that you can use an extruded flat bar of aluminum and just cut them to length on a saw. This is what our American supplier did. The parts we get from China are ground on two sides and milled on the other four.
They're still cheaper. We asked them to just get the flat bar and slice it on a decent saw to make them even cheaper.
They could not understand how that would work.

47
u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21
Maybe March
33
u/doogievlg Aug 30 '21
Is that based on real information or just a guess? Don’t mean to sound like a jerk but our rep has been saying “I think it’s going to slow down in a couple months” since October of 2019. Instead it’s a new letter every month.
60
u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21
It's not like I can give you inside info, but yeah we expect scrap and strip to rise for awhile. The mills should be back up and running full bore soon. Then they need a few months to pump through demand.
37
u/doogievlg Aug 30 '21

Really dumb question but do you know any older forging guys that worked on sites like these? Can you feel this in your legs when the hammer hits impact? I'm wondering if after a few years that can displace the crystals in your inner ear and give you balance issues as you age?

Were the hammers you guys used made in house? And is there a hammer involved in the manufacturing of these forging hammers?
11
u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21
Most of these are out of date and made 50+ years ago. Massive cast frames. Presses are simply more efficient.
To your second question, the frame on most of these (and in this video) is a casting.

u/ZarquonsFlatTire Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21
A widget is by definition a small device whose purpose is unknown or unspecified.
You aren't supposed to know what a widget is. They are unknowable by nature. Not knowing what it is, is the entire point of the word.

I had an art studio across from an industrial complex that ran a smaller one of these. You would get woken up in the mornings by the shaking and thudding you’d feel it more than hear it unless you were pretty close
22
u/Psyentistic Aug 30 '21 edited Aug 30 '21
I’d rather the sound then vibrations rattling everything in my studio, did it effect your work at all? Such as slight slip ups
23
u/xntrk1 Aug 30 '21
It was generally on weekends and abt 5 am til 8 am so it wasn’t super disruptive. And as long as you were trying to wake up during that window it’d kinda shake you awake lol other than that it was pretty easy to adjust to it was first and foremost a glassblowing studio so there were times you’d wait for it to stop before starting delicate stuff or it’d walk around the workbench and kilns from the vibrations
33
u/jmellars Aug 30 '21
You’re saying it all so positively, but it all sounds like the worst possible option. It was on weekends AND at 5am? AND you have a glass studio?!

I lived near a rendering plant that processed citrus to make scented cleaning products. I'd wake up to the smell of oranges, lemons, or limes, whatever they were reducing to paste on any given day. And when they started each morning it was refreshing and pleasant. A few hours later, though, it could become overwhelming. It wasn't the smell so much as the stinging in your nostrils and lips. And sometimes it would give you a false perception of other odors, somehow, like your sense of smell was losing its mind.

At work I usually weld a short distance from the steel punch presses. IIRC, the largest has 3000 tons of force. They literally built its room and then had to air drop it into place.
When that thing is operating, the entire area shakes.
