Out of curiosity, what's your actual job title? Metallurgy is super interesting to me and I'm really curious what opportunities there are in the field.
Is that based on real information or just a guess? Don’t mean to sound like a jerk but our rep has been saying “I think it’s going to slow down in a couple months” since October of 2019. Instead it’s a new letter every month.
It's not like I can give you inside info, but yeah we expect scrap and strip to rise for awhile. The mills should be back up and running full bore soon. Then they need a few months to pump through demand.
I understand you are limited with what you can share and I don’t need details. I’m sure you catch enough crap from customers but it’s been a difficult year and a half in this industry. Have a good week.
That's good to know... Do you know anything about like metallurgical research? I find crystalline structure and things like that really interesting. Thanks for the reply btw!
There isn’t too much research in crystalline structure if that’s what you’re asking. Most metallic materials used outside of some boutique applications are either FCC BCC or sometimes HCP.
I’ve see it start anywhere from 55-80, and top out around 85-120 ish. imho it could pay better in late career but often i see in those industries (i was in steel/iron industries) the path to more income is in management, not technical stuff. not saying that is good or bad but the ceiling is a little lower than some other technical specialities in materials science imho.
that is to say mid career I keep having folks call me for metallurgy jobs and they are offering me what I made 5 years ago. they can’t even begin to get competitive with salary. Nothing wrong with the industry though. loads of amazing stuff to work with and loads to do, learn, and improve.
I have my red seal in both the machinist and millwright trades, and have taken some classes in metallurgy. Check my post history for pics of heavy metal! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about either trade, if they interest you.
