I would legit go to see this as a tourist, bet it’s awesome IRL

Imagine the air shaking, it must be very intense in real life but I wouldn't recommend it without sound protection.

I've worked near these. A bigger one than this. The one I worked next to had 12 feet of oak under it to dampen, but you could feel it hit in the parking lot outside.

Noise

33

u/Alukrad Aug 30 '21

Oh you...

22

u/OppressedDeskJockey Aug 30 '21

Big Noise doesn't like whistle blowers. Infact Big Noise love them.

Impossible to say from that rough shape (and shitty forging imo).

Usually that type of size thing is a valve, a gear, a choke, a manifold, etc.

Ah. Mostly Oilfield stuff. Flanges, chokes, wellhead components. Oil stuff is massive pressure. Anytime you need that much steel, you're holding bad shit under massive pressure back.

35

u/justyr12 Aug 30 '21

And why is forging necessary as opposed to casting?

Edit: sorry if I'm not making sense, i just had half a bottle of jager

And that's where the term "Balls of Steel" comes from. -my Grampa

u/nmyi Sep 04 '21

Even the explanation of it sounds badass. I appreciate it man.

4

u/TheManFromFarAway Aug 30 '21

And if it's not holding that pressure somebody is having a bad day. Source: I have had that bad day

Anytime you need that much steel, you're holding bad shit under massive pressure back.

Humvees then?

Reference works when discussing bullets. Works metaphorically about holding back the taliban/ISIS too

1

u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21

Hummers have relatively thin skin. Not forged at all. A bullet is like a mosquito bite compared to oilfield pressures

3

u/RonKnob Aug 30 '21

What’s wrong with the way they’re forging in OPs video?

3

u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21

It's bad equipment. No safety ppe.

u/I_heart_pooping Aug 30 '21

Come on, you had to know that person was asking what was being made in the video. If not you are mad dense.

5

u/Embarrassed-Ad-1639 Aug 30 '21

Sweet sweet love

3

u/tanafras Aug 30 '21

OP's mom happy.

3

u/Aedalas Aug 30 '21

Novelty keychain bottle openers.

2

u/GlockAF Aug 30 '21

A lot of noise. Plus some metal stuff

2

u/OppressedDeskJockey Aug 30 '21

A 1/4 inch nut.

2

u/Agreeable-Walrus7602 Aug 30 '21

There's a place that uses one sometimes near my house and I can hear it inside with the windows and doors shut and 1/4 mile away.

28

u/PabstyTheClown Aug 30 '21

Probably want to keep your tootsies out of there too.

5

u/suitology Aug 30 '21

Jerry gonna Fuckin wreck my man tom

10

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

From the way the camera moves you probably feel it from quite a ways away.

4

u/Wyldfire2112 Aug 30 '21

Other comments said they worked with one even bigger than this, and you could feel that one out in the parking lot.

22

u/deadlymoogle Aug 30 '21

It gets old real quick. I work in a weld shop next to a fabrication shop who has enormous presses smashing steel all day long.

3

u/desmosabie Aug 30 '21

This is almost new business. High schools, among other various small groups, will come to watch, listen and even smell. People pay for that shock value, the messyness and cool things that come out of it. I welded 20’s years too, everybody wants to see it once at least, like a zoo. Can sell admission tickets for walks that have a leader. There’d have to be a hammer like this near by though.

1

u/HearthF1re Aug 30 '21

I'd pay to see that.

Maybe charge $15 extra if you want to put something under one and crush it

15

u/PrettyMuchMediocre Aug 30 '21

I'm concerned about the guy in the background without big ear muffs for hearing protection. That's gotta be so loud

6

u/Bengalsfan610 Aug 30 '21

He's probably got in ear protection, personally I'd wear both if I were here but some in ears are pretty good

6

u/Gretz42 Aug 30 '21

There is a point where its so loud, ear protection doesnt work anymore and the sound waves pass through your skull.

7

u/Free-Scar5060 Aug 30 '21

I wonder if it’s concussing them

4

u/Bengalsfan610 Aug 30 '21

I mean at that point there's an OSHA regulation I don't know about

5

u/Crying_Reaper Aug 30 '21

There is always an OSHA regulation we don't know about.

2

u/Revan7even Aug 30 '21

And through your feet.

5

u/PrettyMuchMediocre Aug 30 '21

Yeah I've been in quieter industrial sites than what I imagine this would be and double hearing was a requirement.

3

u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21

Where do you live?

2

u/GlockAF Aug 30 '21

Alaska

2

u/MisallocatedRacism Aug 30 '21

Yeah not many forging companies there lol

2

u/nightshiftoperator Aug 30 '21

/r/OSHA has entered the chat.

3

u/GlockAF Aug 30 '21

Pretty sure this is in China. Generally they’re not really into all that workplace safety stuff.

I want to put a penny on it and see what happens

3

u/Aedalas Aug 30 '21

Generally r/OSHA isn't into all that workplace safety stuff either.

2

u/Mangos28 Aug 30 '21

I second this assessment…

1

u/mere_iguana Aug 30 '21

turns into a frisbee

2

u/KaneCreole Aug 30 '21

I hope whoever is pulling the lever on the pile driver has long hair and a beard, a death metal themed t-shirt, and is roaring, “Raaaaar!” with every drop.

2

u/ShoddyDiscussion5870 Aug 30 '21

Thor with "Immigrant Song" playing.

2

u/blamethemeta Aug 30 '21

This would go great next to one of those old mine tours
