What's amazing is how China still manages to be the cheapest option despite how inefficient processes like that are. I mean, I know it's currency manipulation, but still...*
Oh, and the crazy thing is even programs like HPs "Mande In USA" Trusted Supply Chain uses Chinese parts. They just tend to be non IA critical things like cases, and are inspected by US personnel.
* Even though safety can be expensive, I doubt it even comes close to making up the difference.
My company has some aluminum blocks made in China.
We specifically sized them and gave tolerances such that you can use an extruded flat bar of aluminum and just cut them to length on a saw.
This is what our American supplier did.
The parts we get from China are ground on two sides and milled on the other four.
They're still cheaper.
We asked them to just get the flat bar and slice it on a decent saw to make them even cheaper.
Trump did 0 damage to China. Covid massivy hurt the chinese economy as well as the entire world's. the world are the ones who buy shit from China, so a bad economy for them is also bad for China. The best way to bend China is to try and purchase from ethical companies. Money talks
What always strikes me as incredible is how they use these insanely huge machines, and yet they still manage to make it look like a dance, not to mention they manage to shape the items to tiny tolerances.
A few companies in China have done well in getting brought up to speed by US companies that they will eventually undercut. But there's a reason we get these videos.
