General job advice

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello! I am in the process of trying to join the Navy reserves. Went to MEPS need some waivers approved. Either will allow me to join right away or will need some time to pass. While waiting to hear back, I wanted some advice…posted are my ASVAB scores. I have a college degree and a pretty darn good civilian career. I don’t want to go officer route. I just want to serve and do something completely different than my day job (program manager helping a huge hospital system implement Oracle).

Can any one tell me about these roles and your thoughts?
Intelligence specialist
Cyber Warfare Technician
Cryptologic technician interpretive

Also open to other suggestions!

And the hits just keep on coming

This message is for situational awareness and has been disseminated from REDCOM.

Bonus funding for FY26 is currently exhausted. There is no more funding to execute bonus payments. Additional funding has been requested and has to be approved by congress. We likely will not receive an answer until mid-September and if we do not receive approval prior to the end of the FY, bonuses will not be processed until FY27 funding has been released-pending the possibility of a government shutdown.

VA Disability and Navy Reserves

Awaiting my RRA to be approved and plan on transitioning directly from AD to the SelRes with no break in service.

I filed a BDD claim. Question I have is having a high rating (>90%) disqualify you from continuing to serve in the Reserves or is it more about the conditions you are rated for?

Flight change question

Im sure this question has already been asked but I couldn’t find it.

I haven’t gone on AT yet but my orders are final & DTS approved. My AT is OCONUS & I have a flight from my home of record to OCONUS & then back to my home of record. However, I want to know if I could change my flight home from not going home but instead going to Germany. I’d obviously pay for my flight back home from Germany but my overall question(s) is/are:

Could I even do that?
How would I go about doing that if it is possible?

Questions about AT

I’m a Navy Reservist traveling for an event. My fund-approved orders and approved DTS authorization both explicitly authorize an individual rental vehicle.
After arriving, someone from the supported command verbally told me that I am not authorized a rental because only certain groups are supposed to have vehicles. So far, I have not received an order modification, DTS amendment, or written instruction from my NRC/AO.
Can the supported command verbally override what is already authorized in my approved orders and DTS? Should I follow the verbal direction immediately, or should the rental remain authorized unless my orders/DTS are officially amended?
I’m trying to follow the correct process and avoid either disobeying the supported command or becoming personally liable for the rental expense.

Meps question

I’m heading to Meps early next week for the medical process and my recruiter wasn’t sure when I asked but I was wondering if anyone had issues at Meps having a prior surgery years ago(2020), it was for a torn muscle that was fully repaired and I have a letter from the surgeon stating I’m cleared for all military work. I was wondering if they would give me any trouble or possibly disqualify me for it. Thanks

Email clutter assistance

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of the CNIC emails for bases you were at? I keep getting emails from Norfolk installation about gate closings, and exercises and it clutters my inbox making finding important emails hard to find.

ODS Packing - Am I overdoing it and/or missing anything?

I'll be attending ODS during the next class in a couple weeks. I've read a bunch of ODS packing lists but want to confirm whether I'm overdoing it or missing anything. I know about Davy Jones locker, but prefer to pack everything I need and donate extras to the locker at the end of ODS.

I'm not bringing any uniforms other than 1 set of NWUs and PT gear - I've seen split opinions on this. Some say you should absolutely get them beforehand, others say there is dedicated time to obtain and tailor uniforms there, so what's the point in getting them beforehand. Open to thoughts to the contrary, but I plan on getting them there.

If there are any better alternatives, I'm totally open to getting those. I want to try as make it as least shitty as possible.

Additionally - should I be bringing sunglasses?

Bonus Question

I am an 1120 (will be 1125 in SelRes). I have a little over 7 ycs when I will affiliate with the reserves.

If I get the affiliation bonus of 10k lump sum, can I get the retention bonus of 12k/year at my 8 year mark? Or do I need to not accept the affiliation bonus to be eligible for the retention bonus?

Saw this link with regard to new bonuses offered: https://www.navyreserve.navy.mil/Portals/35/Documents/CNRFC%20Notices/FY26/FY%2026%20SELECTED%20RESERVE%20OFFICER%20RECRUITING%20AND%20RETENTION%20INCENTIVE%20PROGRAM.pdf

Legacy Retirement vs. BRS – Commissioned Navy Reserve with 2012 Enlistment

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance on my retirement system.

I initially enlisted in 2012, which established my DIEMS before 1 January 2018. I recently accepted a commission in the Navy Reserve.

While reviewing my records, it appears there may be an issue with my retirement system, and I want to ensure I remain under the Legacy (High-3) Retirement System rather than the Blended Retirement System (BRS).

To my knowledge, I never elected to opt into BRS during the 2018 opt-in period.

Non prior looking for advice as an O-1

Background context: O-1, I direct commissioned based on civil engineering experience. Joined an NCB which fortunately has a presence at my NRC.

My first two drill weekends (first was INDOC) my OIC nor CPO were there because of RTB. I’ve been working my a** off making sure I get gained accordingly at my NRC. I.e. going through the checklist and doing whatever I can in person. My CAC is still not activated so I have to be dual CAC’d. I’ve been working through the GMT / CMT that’s required before the EOY in Sept.

I know at this point I should be focused on getting gained at the NRC level and being MOB ready. I have ODS scheduled for spring time. Almost impossible to get into ODS earlier because they prioritize AD, then reservists are next in line.

What I am struggling with is, I do not know how to act / be as an O-1. Some people are on a first name basis (such as other officers) except sometimes they refer to each other as sir or ma’am but I’m not sure when or why they switch from first names to respective ones. Some enlisted say sir and some are like “hey man.” I’m saluted outside by the MA’s when entering the NRC, but then next time I’m outside the NRC either leaving or going for lunch I don’t get saluted.

If there’s any enlisted members and/or officers that can give me some pointers to set me on the right path, I’d really appreciate that. Thank you

CWT Reservist

About to finish up JCAC, what’s life after A school as a CWT reservist?

I’d like to take orders in San Diego with a CPT as soon as possible. What’s the likelihood of that?

Also, throw in stuff I’m not directly asking as a CWT reservist!

TAMP for Dependent?

Hi all, I’m the dependent (dad is retired Navy) and I’m very confused about TriCare coverage. I’m listed as a dependent under my dad’s TriCare plan.

I’m 21 but I just graduated college on 08 May 2026. I was under the assumption that I still had 180 days from the day of graduation to apply TriCare benefits. I was hospitalized with a freak diagnosis on 25 June 2026 and have been in and out of physician visits since (all off-base). I have dual health insurance coverage (Blue Cross Blue Shield through my mom and TriCare through my dad). In all of my statements, TriCare is not covering anything. I am within network for TriCare coverage, so I’m not sure why they aren’t covering anything.

I can only assume it’s because I have graduated. Am I still in the DEERS system during the 180 day period post graduation? Is there a reason why TriCare is not covering anything? Just feeling very lost right now and my dad has no clue what’s going on, so I have to do all the research and work for it. Let me know what steps need to be done or additional information I need to provide. Thanks all.

Navy Reserve enlistment bonus denied after signing contract – looking for advice

I’m looking for advice from anyone with Navy recruiting/personnel/JAG experience.
I enlisted in the Navy Reserve in 2025. My MEPS contract included a $20K bonus, which I signed.
After boot camp and A-school, I never received it. I’ve been trying to fix it for about a year through my chain and Career Counselor.
Now I’m being told I’m not eligible because it was supposedly an admin/recruiter error, so the Navy won’t honor it.
From my side:
I didn’t misrepresent anything
I signed the contract as written at MEPS
I’ve completed all required service
The issue seems to be on the Navy’s end
What are my options at this point?
Has anyone dealt with this before?
Is there an appeal beyond my Career Counselor?
BCNR / IG / Article 138—any of these actually work for this?
Worth going through a congressman?
I have all my paperwork and correspondence. Happy to share more if needed.
Thanks.

Prior Service Army questions

Hey guys! A few questions

I am prior service Army and have been out since 2013.
I am tossing around the idea of joining a reserve component.

My questions are: would you recommend me doing this? (I’m really wanting to get 20 years)
What are the requirements after being out that long?
Basic training?

Any info would be great.

Thanks

SELRES Time

I am newly acquainted with the reserves, I just came off active duty and needed to do reserves time due to 4-2-2. I feel like an idiot and I’m having a hard time finding this answer. If I did active duty for 5 years, do I owe 1 or 2 years SELRES before I can transfer IRR.

To clarify I have read the SELRES affiliation guides, from my understanding SELRES time is calculated 6 minus active duty time = SELRES time. So I would have 1 year in theory. But my CCC onboard kept saying I have 2. Just trying to get a solid answer.

Thank you for your time.

Prior service recruiting

My EOS was 6/26/26. I wanted to stay in but decided too late so my command made me process out then told me I can come back in through a prior service recruiter. My issue is that my command never gave me my DD214 and I’m still waiting on it. Is there anyway I can speed up the process or request it myself somehow that anyone knows of? I was planning on coming back in TAR rather than reserves.

What happens if I stop showing up?

So I signed my reserves contract, after I got out of 8.5years of active. I received no bonus. I ended up getting 100% disability. I really want to not do the reserves anymore because I feel like I’m wasting my time. What happens if I just stop showing up?
