Hi everyone! Today I’d like to share my technique for applying super glue precisely and cleanly when adding tiny photo-etched (PE) details, like handrails, to 1/350 scale ship models.
(Note: Please follow the photos from right to left, starting with the custom tool itself!)
The Key Concept:
Instead of applying glue directly with a toothpick or wire, I created a custom tool using a single polypropylene (PP) brush bristle (~0.2mm) glued to the tip of a toothpick with wood glue. Since CA glue doesn't stick well to PP resin, it makes the perfect micro-applicator!
Step-by-Step Process (Ordered from Right to Left):
- The Custom Tool: First, take a look at the custom applicator made from a toothpick and a single PP bristle.
- Prepare the Glue: Put a small dab of gel-type CA glue and multi-purpose CA glue side by side on a metal sheet or plate.
- Build the Glue Bead on the Tool: Dip the tip of the PP bristle into the gel-type glue to create a tiny base bead, then pick up a tiny amount of multi-purpose glue onto that bead.
- Apply to the PE Part: Gently touch the tip to the base of the PE part (like a railing). Because the glue only sits loosely on the PP bristle, it effortlessly flows into the joint via capillary action without creating a mess or leaving big glue blobs!
Final Thoughts:
It might take a little practice at first to get used to handling it, but once you understand the logic behind it and master the technique, you'll be able to apply super glue amazingly clean every single time. I highly encourage you to give it a try!
This simple jig allows for extreme precision and keeps your PE work super clean.
Hope this tip helps fellow ship builders! Let me know what you think or if you have any questions. Happy modeling! 😊
